I read and loved it.
And I think it's a must read if you're interested in politics. For instance there are a lot of references from that book given in political commentairies and such.
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal then others."
Anyhow, who do you think the various characters represent?
I think they're somewhat based on Soviet Russia.
The old pig, who tells of the revolution would be Karl Marx.
Snowball would be Trotski and or Lenin.
And Napoleon definately resembles Stalin.

I should have changed this part.
It should be:
t's a costly (encarceration in the "Last Mile" is even more costly then regular prison. And even that isn't cheap), counterproductive (states/countries with Death-Penaltys have more crimes or something), riskfull (what if you convicted a truly innocent man/woman) punishment?
I'm usually against the Death Penalty.
It's a costly, counterproductive (states with Death-Penaltys have more crimes or something), riskfull (what if you convicted a truly innocent man/woman)?
I even was against the Death Penalty for Timothy McVeigh. (because it makes a martyr out of him, we'd be much better off letting him rot in jail forever)
But I am in favor of sending Tookie to the great big place in the sky, or in his case the fiery place down below. I don't think he's really innocent.
"Why?", you ask me.
Because it's not a bad thing making him somewhat of a martyr.
It's a perfect ending to the books he wrote. I know, it has a cruel sound to it, but it's not like he doesn't deserve to be executed.
Ok, the best thing that could happen is that he would be released from prison and that he would be totally redeemed. But it's kinda unlikely that that would happen.
He does have a clear change of lifestyle. He's now writing books. But I think a rival gang will assasinate him. Continuing the stream of revenge.
Better let the State enact revenge, then letting someone else get revenge...

So now we have sexy batwoman in our comic strips...
And that's a bad thing because...???
Okay maybe some stories will turn out lame. Well then don't buy the lame ones.
Anyhow, I find it somewhat hard to believe that feminists are the reason why comics get to feature sexy women-heroes. Ok, maybe it's a compromise. Anyhow, I'm not complaining.

The theory that determination will result in wealth with no government regulations keeps this countries economy afloat. It hurts small buisness but is good for overall buisnesses. You can be inventive, play the stock market right, or just plain get lucky and be rich for generations. Tax cuts are helpful because it gives entrapanuers a chance to set up large buisness and bring in huge income and have their buisnesses grow creating jobs.
Yes if you will look at wellfare figures (scoring a lot of trys), you will get the idea you're doing well. Corruption basicly is stealing stuff from someone. Well if we all keep stealing stuff from eachother it means money is on a roll.
If I steal 100K from you this year and you steal 100K from me, both of us will have had a raised income of 100K. Woot, we're rich! :D (in wellfare figures that will show, though it won't show in well-being figures. But you can't really measure well-being)
Translated to rugby:
You have a match were we all just keep scoring tries. We walk from one side to another letting the other score points. Both our teams will have a substantial amount of tries at the end of the seison. Which could result in one of us winning the title.
Problem is we botched up what could have been a great game. I don't enjoy walking from one end to another.
Also if other teams start using the same method it will be one dull game. Our wellfare (amount of goals) will have greatly increased. But our well-being (fun) will be greatly diminished.
Going to try and compare it with sports (I hope it will make it easier)
Using rugby as a model for society.
(Almost any sport might do, since it's just a comparison. I'm just more at home with rugby)
Corruption = trying to win a game by cheating
A referee (the Law) will not see everything that goes on into a game. Especially with Rugby, since it's all just a big mess. Chess is much easier to referee, though with fast chess cheating could occur.
Anyhow with rugby some people will try a lot of stuff in order to win. "As long as the referee doesn't see it, it's legal." These people are obviously very corrupt. In a response people from the other team will also try to punish people who cheat this much (take the law in their own hands). A lot of times though people just don't know the rules that well (rugby rules are plenty and can be very complicated). Though there are a few basic rules (amendments) that were set to be followed.
* The ball (money) needs to come into play as quickly as possible so we can get to play further. (money is round) The more the ball goes around, the more fun (well-being/wellfare) we have.
Downside to this, is people can get very tired. If played well, rugby can be a very tiring game.
Especially when played in the sand with few players. (Desert)
The players can become totally exhausted. (Depletion of natural recources)
One of the problems with rugby, is that you need a very good referee. He has a lot of power in the game. But because he has a lot of power, he can use it for the good of the game. If someone's bitching about his disicion, he can send that person off in the blink of an eye.
This results in players being very cooperative with the referee when playing the game. This results in the referee being able to concentrate better on the stuff he's doing.
However if you were able to get a referee that is not impartial (bribe), you're in trouble.
Thank god, it's mostly just a game, so that won't happen too often. People don't want to beat the other guy at all costs in order to win. They just want to play a fair game, so everybody wins. (Not becoming rich, because you don't want to be corrupt, resulting in the other being richer then you.)
However you could try everything in order to win. If the other team will do the same you will end up with a very nasty game/seison. (There will be so much corruption everybody will end up pretty poor. Though one group/person will end up with more money then the other(s))
I don't know, but will Dean be running for (some) office?
Anyhow, we don't need people who are a bit on the "hate-monger" side. (Bush, Dean)
But we also don't need people that don't firmly believe in something. (Kerry)
These are sometimes conflicting things. If you believe strongly in something, you're bound to say some nasty stuff about someone with a different opinion.
To create a good balance between the two of them (believing strongly in something & being a uniter), you need to be able to express yourself with good NUANCE.
Problem is, you can't always do that. Just look at the TV debates where they want you to state one-liners. You can not put much Nuance in that.
Kerry tried that too much, so he was made out to not be a strong believer.
Not that he didn't make any hatefull remarks, nor did Bush not attempt to be a uniter. People really aren't that black and white. It's just that some people are more balanced then others.

even if we do run out, something will be found to replace it. necessity is the mother of all invention as they say. already there are millions of dollars being pumped into research for alternative fuels and they get more efficient all the time. i for one am not worried about this impending doom
Well no, it will probably not directly result in impending doom.
Though it will stagnate economy to a point from which it can't recover. It's already having problems recovering. Imagine what would happen if we have a real problem from which we need to recover.
Oil it just a really cheap source of energy. There's no way wind, water, sun or even nuclear fusion energy would be able to compete with that.
Though maybe nuclear fission could save us. Though I'm not willing to bet on it.
For electricity production less then 10% (maybe even 1%) is derived from natural recources. Meaning 90% is derived from oil, uranium and other depletable recources. IMO, that's not a lot of progtress.
This is just electricity . I imagine numbers for cars, factories and other stuff show that they use even less undepletable recources.
Ok, I don't have a site or recource to back this up. Though I have never seen estimates before showing totally different numbers on how much of our energy use comes from undepletable recources.
Also HYDROGEN is NOT the answer. Just want to make that clear just in case.
You need electricity to generate Hydrogen. Though hydrogen cars are really beneficial for reducing city-pollution, they won't solve the energy shortage.

I can understand the Anger about that. For example the early release.
Though it's not really justified in my opinion. You could have that kind of outrage in the US or another western country. But Aruba isn't really a western country.
Do you think that when an Aruban kid gets murdered over there that they will have a different kind of investigation which would be more thorough?
Nah of course not.
To my knowledge there have been incidents about cocaïne smugglers getting released earlym because they don't have the jail capacity to keep them in prison.
Ok maybe not back to the pre-industrial age, but back to the twenties/fifties.
Still quite a step back imho. (in technology and luxery that is)

Well there's not going to be an oil shortage in 2020 because we've run out of oil.
There might be an oil shortage in 2020 because there won't be enough supply to meet demand. Especially if Economies like China's keep growing like they currently are.
We actually already have a small oil shortage. The crude oil price has risen signifacantly.
In about 15 years the shortage will evem larger if we don't do something now.
Off course it will not directly result in an apocalypse of biblical proportions. Though I do think it might result in a "crisis".
Though an energy crisis like this could be something to spark WWIII, which definately could result in something closer to a biblical apocalypse.
Something like this was concluded from the last energy convention.
Though if the Chicken plague would really hit us hard, like the spanish flu. We might be "saved" from an oil crisis. Not that a plague is really much better.
------------------------
Anyhow, about ramping up crude oil production...
It's just extending the time we have to come up with new energy recources. Maybe it will be another 100 years before we finally really begin to run out of oil.
Thing is, I don't think we will have really done anything by that time to stop it. We've been making plans to stop this from happening from back to the seventies. It's like this parachute joke:
A guy jumps off a plane for a parachute dive. He's 10.000 feet above the ground. When he approaches 1000 feet, he's thinking. "Meh, I can wait before I pull the cord."
When he's a 100 feet, he's still thinking: "Meh, I can wait."
When he's at 25 feet, he's still thinking: "Meh, I can wait."
When he's at 5 feet, he thinks: "Meh, I can jump that last bit myself."
But emm okay by 100 years we will all be dead. So who cares? Well it's a moral issue really. Is it fair to your children or your childrens children?
Though I could definately imagine some people saying good riddance of this luxury lifestyle we're having. Back to before the industrial age? Who cares?
Anyhow it might be futile anyhow. Oil shortage isn't the only threat to society as we know it..
What about some of the entries in the Obituaries?
Some of them really deserve to get abused.

I contained myself, but maybe I shouldn't have?
The flash was just a blue dot with a smile on it. Ow and it had VOTE5 written above it. Writing the review might have taken more trouble than actually making the flash alltogether. :-/
Ok, you can't mark those as abusive, but just for the sake of the argument.

Meh I don't know if I'd favor Rome over Greece.
Rome did some pretty bad stuff, imo.
There is also a thread with tips for submitting stuff.
What kind of title, preloader, what kind of intro text. That kind of stuff.
Well for some people it's a good way to vent frustration. ^^
It's good to have it off your chest.

Point of it all: What if questions suck
If Hitler didn't excist, you, me everyone in this discussion wouldn't have even been born.
So from a selfish point of view we should be thankfull Hitler existed (or not if you experience life to be a burden and rather be dead). How's that for a twist. :)
Hmm going into a fate-based discussion now. Hmm don't really like that. I want to do speculations! :-D
So emm lets forget about Hitler and gunpowder, since they're too far in the past.
Hmm although after reading the other questions, they also were too much in the past. Osama and Bush were also born before me so that would have changed things...
Well lets say Osama did get killed by a cruise missile and some other operations against al qaida were succesfull. Enough so 9/11 might did not happen. For one I think the stock markets would still have crashed. The internet bubble was about to burst anyhow along with some other bubbles like Enron.
Meh might be more interesting to speculate if Gore would have won.
(Maybe he would have "invented" a better internet? rofl.)

But it might be the thing to tip over the balance on that.
(I don't know if this is a correct expression, but... : "It will be the drop that makes the bucket flow over" does come to mind.)
People do stuff like this so they will be noticed/remembered.
Getting frontpage on NG is one way.

Those resources and staff time could be much better used tending to people who might, you know, LIVE.
Meh I just felt like throwing this into a TerriSchiavo discussion.
Well I assumed the people who want Terri to live, want her to live because they think she could still wake up from being a vegetable.
And the chances for Terri to ever wake up are just as big as for the baby to survive (they both need a miracle or something).
But if the people who want Terri to live, just want her to live so she can still be a vegetable. Then the whole thing is just irrelevant, I guess. :-/
To me it seems like a livelong prison if I wouldn't be able to wake up. So you could just as well shoot me.
*Wouldn't want to be part of that experiment that Roahld Dahl described either. Where they would take a man's brain and eyes and keep it alive in some sort of tank. You know that short-story?

You know, this flash has got the graphics and the humor to reach front page IMHO.
But well, it would just be too much for some. Too obseen. It's definately not mainstream material.
So maybe it should not get a score that would make it a decent or awesome score. Just to protect some people. Though I don't know if they deserve protection. The age mark should be protection enough, right?
What do you guys think?
Anybody know the flash about radiation poisoning in Iraq? Might not even be on newgrounds, but I figure that there's a reasonable chance u guys could have seen it.
It was a slideshow with some gruesome pictures of deformed babies. And it had a lot of numbers in it. And the Music was metal. The band was, as I believe, Das Ich.
Yeah I suppose she lacked tact. Shrug.
I just needed to get this all off my chest. (Ok a bit of a freaky way to do it, but screaming out the window would have been freakier) :p
Thx ppl ^^
Luckilina Ele made such a nice flash. But it got blammed.
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/rip.php?id=222193
It was a really touching flash where she thanked all her friends. Ok, people on NG don't like those kind of tributes, but this one was so adorable. *sniff*
(Ow and I know she didn't have the right commentary either. I still feed sad.)
Anyone know any other stuff she submitted?
About Master Chief voice:
Isn't there a thread for when you're looking for voice actors?
Or something else for that? I don't know I'm just guessing.
Might be a nice idea to have something like that.
Have a place where you can have a supply and demand for voice actors.
Some sort extra portal for voice acting. Though I think one's you've submitted a flash you will get some people wanting to do the voice acting for you. Though it might be a bit of a waste for your batting average... Oeh decisions, decisions, dicisions...

Anyhow while we're on the subject of why certain posts don't get attention. Here's mine that didn't get attention.
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic.php?id=236151
My guesses are:
- that I have a title that isn't really saying anything concrete. (well at least it might not have given the right idea what the topic was about)
- the text was a bit too long and boring for most people
- my idea just #$*$^*#
I hope some of you will write something about this even though it's a really flamy reply. An angry reply is better than no reply...
Takes away some of the insecurity.
Categories for flash (for non-regulars).
When some of my friends are browsing Newgrounds they sometimes get angry when they watch a flash with a good rating they still go like: "#$(*& this $#$^6". And not because it's a bad flash. It's actually an awesome flash. No they don't like it because it's not their kind of category.
Like for example when they are in a bloodlust mode and see "there she is"; they will hate it. And you can't really blame them, since the picture that accompanies the flash is a bunny holding a large axe.
It will also be a handy tool for regulars though regulars are quicker to recognize a certain type of cartoon and they won't get upset either since they know how great Newgrounds can be.
Downside is offcourse that too many symbols are confusing.
And sometimes you don't want to give away the category. It's part of the suprise ending.
It's just an idea I had so people will get the most out of newgrounds. So what do you all think?
(Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but I didn't want to bother with the search engine, since I don't think it would get me far. The keywords for my topic are a bit all round {Category, flash})
The categories I had in mind are:
Humor
Violent
Surreal (!)
Sweet (or adorable)
