Your views on animal entertainment? Posted November 20th, 2014 in General

Earlier this week, a video was posted on Facebook of Tim McIlrath, lead singer of Rise Against, speaking out against animals held in captivity for entertainment purposes, especially in circuses and marine theme parks like Sea World, (or Marineland for Canada)

Video found here.

Tim is a long-time vegan, and although it's not the greatest organization out there, he supports PETA also.

So I actually started thinking; how do I feel about this? I haven't been to the Buffalo Zoo in quite a few years, and I went to Marineland when I was maybe 12. Back then, you didn't really think if the animals care or not. They're animals, it was cool. However, now that I'm older, I do have to wonder, what draws the line?

But, when it comes to the animals in captivity for entertainment, they are, presumably, treated fairly well. I have read articles about Sea World trainers developing deep bonds to the orcas they train, so much so that that orcas appear happy to see the trainers daily. However, some of the orcas have snapped. Most notably Tilikum, whom's killed three trainers in his lifetime...

...Take this into account; Despite the obvious differences, you may have a dog. I might be being unreasonable, but compare your dog and an orca at Seaworld. Both are kept in captivity. Your dog, generally speaking, is confined to your house or your yard, on a leash if you go for a walk. The orca has a tank. The tanks are fairly large for them to swim, but yes, they can't be taken for walks. They live in the tanks. Both are fed by their humans. And, although it's more extreme for the orca, you might teach your dog tricks.

What do you feel about this? Is there some kind of invisible line that separates the morality of the captivity of these two animals? If there is, what do you think it is?

Do you enjoy animal shows, or will you decide to boycott them?

Personally, I never really went to many to begin with, so I probably won't be jumping to go see any anytime soon, obviously.

It's disappointing to learn otherwise.

Well, for some people, it might remind them like they feel they never had a proper teenage experience and it makes them sad.

Yeah. Soon people will be mistaking you for a 27 year old, hurting your feelings and making you feel even more lonely and alienated in the world.

Not that I... know anything about this.

You turn 18, and want to get fucked, you literally put an ad on CL and you have half the gay men in your town running a train on you the next day. Why? Because dude's just want sex. Us stupid heteros have to work for relationships.

"Farid has some odd specifications for The Other: He must be male, and he must be heterosexual and in a relationship. The straight and male parts are because Farid is a straight male, and he doesn't want to "complicate" things. The relationship part is so Farid has a "narrative" of what's happening. A man in a relationship is more likely to say aloud that he's going out to buy milk then one who lives alone, for example."

Oh, that and he want to watch them have sex.

Anyways I got my exercise today from shoveling my driveway and shit. Alone. For about 2 hours. We only got about a foot, but neighborhoods only a mile or so from me got up to 7 feet.

And it's snowing heavy again tonight. Lake Effect is the shit.

Plan on jogging tomorrow and Friday. Been doing mid-semester bullshit and busy. Tomorrow, class is already cancelled, and if a travel ban is issued, I won't be going to work.
