Response to: China > US Posted May 24th, 2010 in Politics

In your theoretical economics, China most certainly has the US beat, as the government encourages corporations to work the vast impoverished lower class to the bone. This doesn't change the fact that it's still below Iran on the Human Development Index, that it's government is a sham of democracy with civil rights policies st uck in the 50's, and that all the pollution and lack of decent transportation and housing make living there a pretty pitiful alternative to staying in the US.

So yeah, for actual living conditions, I'm still going with US > China.

I certainly hope you don't take those last two comments seriously, rhyming is so incredibly irrelevant in meaningful poetry that a good deal of literary critics refuse to even consider modern rhyming poetry worthy of publication (unless of course it is unusually well written, which is rare). 90% of the time, rhyming in amateur poetry just makes it sound juvenile. Really, don't bother.

My advice- try to make it less general and give us more sensory details. The basic message we're getting here is "My life revolves around you girl, everything was meaningless without you." Tell us one specific problem she gave the answer to, or one heartache that she was able to remedy- this will mean a whole lot more to an audience who is trying to identify with you. Right now it just feels like the standard cut-and-dry love poem, which is fine if that is the intention, but you can hardly expect anyone else to be emotionally connected to it.

Monster Hunter rant Posted July 8th, 2009 in Video Games

So I bought this game called "Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite" for the PSP after seeing it listed in the top 10 selling PSP games, thinking it would be a fun Japanese-style RPG with some multiplayer elements. I discovered it hardly looks Japanese, it's not an RPG, and it's ANYTHING but fun. It's easily the worst PSP game ever spawned, and perhaps one of the worst games ever created. I thought I was a glutton for punishment, but this game is insufferable. Here's why:

1. There are only two difficulty levels in this game- ****ing hard and mother****ing impossible! Even in the bottom rank missions, boss monsters often take hundreds of hits to kill, and they run to another part of the map AND RESTORE THEIR HEALTH whenever you actually manage to damage it. The worst part is how they increase the difficulty of later missions- they feature exactly the same monsters and environments but exponentially increase the enemies' heath. These battles can easily take over half an hour of endless hacking and slashing. Heck, I usually end up dying from running out of potions and rations before I manage to win one of these mandatory fights. On the rare chance that I do (believe me, it's rare) the items I get are generally worthless, and I end up fighting the same mission over and over again just to get the right items to get one measly weapon upgrade.

2. 5 hours of mindless tutorials are required to even understand the basics of this game. It's FAR too simple to just worry about fighting the goddamn boss, you got to worry about weapon sharpening, bug collecting, armor crafting, status conditions, stamina loss, health potions, item combining, fishing, attack combos, ammo reloading, elemental advantages, which part of the monster you target, temperature, that IDIOTIC DANCING CAT ALLY WHO ALWAYS HITS YOU WITH BOMBS INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY HELPING YOU FIGHT MONSTERS, mining, guild ranks, treasure collecting, having your items stolen, and playing that stupid meat cooking minigame! And that doesn't even consider the ridiculous time limit. As if the people who hire you for these stupid missions are going to have a heart attack if you don't slay the elder dragon or man eating hermit crab in 40 minutes. My AP Calculus class was less complicated this game. It's like Gauntlet mixed with Animal Crossing, but with all the fun taken out and replaced with a steaming pile of polygonal dog vomit. It's AWFUL.

3. The character physics in this game are beyond ridiculous. Apparently these monster hunters can survive drops from any height without so much as a scratch, but if even one pixel of a monster's swinging tail nicks you, you're going flying (and losing half of your health). At the same time, the controllable character moves slower than a crippled turtle, and running drains his stamina to nil in about 10 seconds. Yet once you go back to the town, you mysteriously gain the ability to run indefinitely. Oh, and the enemies have the capability to dive at you straight through trees and rocks while you get stopped in your tracks. How about a little common sense?

4. When I'm fighting a giant farting pink gorilla (excuse me, a "Congalala") backed up by fire breathing raptors and psychotic boar monsters, this game loses ANY illusion of feasibility. Why is it that every single monster in the whole bloody world are willing to team up to make sure I'm dead? I feel like it's an episode of Transformers: Beast Wars or something, seeing cheetahs and giraffes fighting side by side. I'm not even sure why they hate me so much, they always run by the big meaty herbavores that just stand around to get even when you attack them and make a beeline for the little dude with the swords. Do I have a giant sign over my head that says "Please, kill me!" or something? On top of that, the enemies don't even care when they accidentally hit each other, and you'll regularly see little monsters killed by a boss' charge attack. Even the first Doom game had monster infighting. Absolutely unexcusable.

5. Even with all the mindless tutorials, the game repeatedly "forgets" to tell you important details that are crucial to understanding the game. For example, the player is apparently able to go up in "hunter rank", which give them access to better missions and equipment. However, NOBODY in the game gives me even a clue as to how to actually go up a level, and after 30-some hours of gameplay I am still stuck with boring, bottom rank missions. I've spent a good hour trying to figure it out and I still have no idea, though I did discover a guild point counter hidden away in a status menu. It looks exactly like an experience bar, giving you the impression that it would that when you reach the target point value (obtained by winning missions), you'll go up a rank. However, every time I get close to the target amount, the required amount goes up a couple hundred points, and I can never reach this mysterious target. What video game does that, giving you a goal and then making it impossible to reach? It's like some medieval torture device, or like having to repeatedly drag a boulder up a cliff only to have it roll over you again. Ugh...

6. Horrible, horrible camera and controls. Even Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops did a better job than this, and they both managed to continue the infuriating tradition of destroying the PSP's analog stick by forcing the player to use it for all in-game movement. MGS and Force Unleashed managed to make my last PSP unusable thanks to forcing me to wear out the controls, and I am not giving this game another chance.

Bottom line- this game fails beyond description. Your best option is to pirate the game, and then burn it. Then throw the developers in a room with a giant pink gorilla, and see how THEY like it. Apparently there are several games in this series, but I don't know what kind of sick monsters would expect gamers to come back for a second heaping of torture after the first time around.

Response to: The Next Advance Wars? Posted July 7th, 2009 in Video Games

I'd like to see a faster paced game, preferably real time. I can't stand the "unit crawl" of Dual Strike, where people inch forward with rows of Rockets in a seemingly endless stalemate. Days of Ruin got it better, but the COs lost almost all individuality in gameplay strategy. There's no reason why Advance Wars couldn't be translated to real time, it would look and play great with some 3D graphics.

And they should either get a new storyline director or cut single player out entirely, cause the last two just sucked.

Cripes, they can already GO that deep, they're using an abandoned mine that was dug years ago. The reason it costs so much is because the equipment they use is massive and has to be custom built.

Call an exterminator if it's that bad, they'll clear those insects out within a couple of hours, but you'll need to stay away from the area until whatever poison they used clears the air.

In Washington we used big red plastic christmas-bauble like objects covered with a very powerful superglue. The bastards would fly right towards them thinking they were fruit. It's not fun cleaning the things, though.

Response to: I am making a DS game! Posted June 25th, 2009 in General

I was wondering how you were going to port this to the DS. Isn't Nintendo pretty dang anal about who they allow to get their hands on the dev kits, materials, etc? I'm not sure of how big of a market you'll find in the homebrew scene, so you'd be hard pressed to avoid piracy. Or maybe you're doing it for the art, I don't know.

I'd love to hear your scientist voice. :-P

1.) Can't argue with you there, but it extends to Katy Perry, Rihanna and all those other annoying pop singers.
2.) Only song by Lil Wayne I like is A Millie. He over-synthesizes his voice WAY too much, and his lyrics make Soulja Boy look intelligent.
3.) Not available in my country due to copyright restrictions. **** YOU YOUTUBE.

What exactly do you mean by "today", anyways? I don't know any music that was released in the past 24 hours that I can particularly complain about, but if you're referring to music released in the past year or so you might want to look around for new artists. TI and Nas are releasing some pretty slick music, my old standby Eminem is not. :(

I'd get the TV. You can always get consoles for cheap online or form your friends later on, while a big TV screen is a solid investment now and provides a long lasting source of entertainment.

In a nutshell, consoles and games will move on, the need for big displays will not.

If I was this friend, I probably would not care about the computer so much as the contents inside. Anyone can buy another cheap laptop, but the files inside could require hundreds of hours of work to replace. By lying about having lost the laptop, that is tantamount to stealing and he is very likely going to be suspecting the same thing. Regardless of how you handle the situation, make sure he gets the computer back, or what's left of it.

Of course we threw them, I gave a carefully aimed toss and caught it on the way down. The girl next to me was a bit more aggressive and ended up nearly losing her hat. I'm sure the ensuing chaos was worth it to the other graduates, though.

I never really understood the purpose of those hats, who would actually go around wearing them? Maybe some medieval scholars used them as a portable umbrella or something. You never know...

Have you ever had a near death experience? If so, then explain and say wether or not you considered it life changing. No, I have not had one that I knew of.

Have you ever had a life changing experience? If so, explain with as much detail as you can. Then tell me wether you considered the change to be a positive or negative one.

Yes, I've had several, but like the last poster said this is a rather vague question. Probably moving to Germany was the biggest for me. It's hard to imagine how different it feels in another country until you actually get there.
