Instead of diving deeper into the single-player portion of BioShock 2, 2K Marin and Digital Extremes used E3 2009 as a venue for showcasing its multiplayer element. Since the first game didn't have any kind of multiplayer, this is something new to the franchise, and something the team wants to get right. While the story of the main takes place years after the events of the original, the multiplayer component is being set up as more of a prequel. The conflict in which the free-for-all and team free-for-all mode take place is set right around the time of Rapture's fall, just as the populace of the underwater city was beginning to succumb to splicing-induced psychosis.

The way the game's multiplayer suite is setup, you're given a little bit of narrative background. You're a human (not a Big Daddy, like in the single-player) in the employ of Sinclair Solutions, a company investigating the side effects of splicing. The way for you to gather data for them is to engage in combat. But before you start shooting others, the company outfits you with a nice apartment in Rapture's underbelly, which basically functions like a fancy multiplayer lobby. In it you're free to roam around, check out the view to the water below, wander over to your bookshelves, into your bathroom, listen to the changing recordings from Sinclair, and browse match menus.

Here you'll also be able to customize your loadout (you can't bring everything available into a fight at once), which changes as you play more and more of the multiplayer game. Participating in matches, getting kills, and performing specific actions will rank up your character as you play, unlocking new plasmids, weapons and upgrades to load into custom presets for use in battle. Initially you'll have winter's bite, which freezes enemies, incinerate, which sets enemies on fire and does damage over time, and electrobolt, which does damage and stuns. Keep in mind that everyone in the server will be running around with combinations of these powers, so it seems like things could get pretty crazy fairly quickly.

We weren't able to go hands-on, but in the demo we were shown of people playing on a live server, fire attacks and streaks of lightning were flying around everywhere in the maps, which are set in various locations in Rapture's world. Since the game is set before things to completely bonkers in Rapture, the overall art style tends to reflect a world that's still in good shape. Also scattered around are vending machines, though you can't actually use them to purchase things. Instead, it seems items will just be sitting in the tray at the bottom ready to be picked up.

Speaking of pickups, there's one thing that'll be pretty valuable to anyone -- a suit of Big Daddy armor. An instance of this will spawn every once in a while, indicated by the lumbering protector's characteristic groan sound effect. Anyone nearby who opts to hop in will then be able to walk around with the armor on, gaining defense and strength but giving up mobility. It'll also be possible to hack into turrets in some of the maps and have them shoot for you, though there won't be a hacking mini-game, but a progress bar.

All the multiplayer modes aren't yet being talked about, but overall it looks like it could be fairly interesting, especially considering some of the crazy plasmid and weapon combinations you could bring into battle once you've ranked up enough and unlocked more of the arsenal.

BioShock 2 is scheduled to be released in early November in North America.

Newgrounds has to have a detector to keep kids under 18 years away from adult things
I mean you have to put a safety detector to every video or game mature or adult if you agree with me leave a comment above or send me a PM
