Response to: who still plays in a band? Posted May 9th, 2012 in Audio

Ive never been in a band for more then a few months, every time I try to stay and keep things together oot always ends with egos going haywire.
I always try to leave my ego at the door and focus on the music and try to bring everybody's vision together into one coherent piece, but it seems that every person ive played with wants to become a rockstar instead of an artist and that this is THEIR band not OUR.

I remember when I first started playing guitar and this friend of mine played drums at the local brass-band, we would just join up once a week and jam our hearts out, thats the kind of stuff i want to do, just chill out and create something everyone can be proud of.

So yeah, long story short: Now I have about 5 different solo projects, all going nowhere and thats just the way I like it.

I also generally play as a session musician if theres any bands who need a bass or a guitar player at a gig.

I'm listening to some music in bed but everything sounds much faster than usual, to a bizarre degree actually. I googled it and sure enough others have experienced it, but no one could give a sensible answer to why that happens.
Happened to me too, except the other way round. I posted about it in this thread before actually; one time I had just finished a few basketball matches and was exhausted. I began listening to music right afterwards and I felt like everything I was hearing was incredibly slow. I even went and looked in my mobile to see if some weird tempo setting was changed, because even the 170 BPM DnB songs I had in my music list felt like they were playing in slow motion.

Could have something to do with your adrenaline levels, SBB (Bouy) was lying in bed so he was quite relaxed, therefore everything went faster for him, while you however, you said you had been playing basketball? Even if you where physically tiered, the adrenaline could still be quite present in your bloodstream.
The way everybody perceive time is controlled by adrenaline and there have been reports of people seeing the world in a Matrix-styled fashion while under extreme pressure.

But then again, im just theorizing.

I used Garageband for about 3 years while I was beginning to produce mostly because it was straight-to-the-point but I recently upgraded to Logic Pro, and yes, you can add plugins (Audio units, not VSTs).

Neither Logic or Protools have any good strings built in, so the things your looking for are Plug-ins.
As a logic user, I suggest buying Logic Pro, its fairly cheap and quite straight-to-the-point, it wont take long to have the basics down, Protools has a learning curve equal to a brick wall.

And whit the money you save on Logic can go to buying some higher-end plugins, im not much of a symphonic producer, but im pretty sure Native-Instruments "Komplete" bundle will give you what you want including a lot of other things like synths and drums, the bundle is also fairly cheap.

But if you feel like spending some extra dollars, I suggest looking into "Komplete Ultimate" (Like "Komplete", only more!), IK Multimedias "Philharmonik" or if you have a lot of hardrive-space, anything from East/West (Symphonic orchestras, choirs, guitars, cinematic drums e.t.c. e.t.c.).

I dont have the best headphones on right now, but it sounds lige a simple sine/saw combo on a low-pass filter moving upwards every beat whit the resonance at about 9'o clock.

Response to: Loop Library Copyright Question. Posted April 18th, 2012 in Audio

At 4/18/12 02:54 PM, Supersteph54 wrote: Wait, first off the rule doesn't ban the use of loops. It bans making a whole song or most of a song out of loops. For example, you can use a premade drum loop which isn't yours in your original track (provided that this premade drum loop doesn't have some sort of copyright or license on it disallowing you to do this), but making your whole track out of premade loops is disallowed.

So basically it depends on what constitutes your original work or not. Submitting MIDI rips, duplo, etc... is all not your original work, but using a loop or two which wasn't made by you in your tracks is perfectly OK.

Thanks for clearing that up :)
The loops I use are mostly additional textures i add to give the song some character, so it wont be made purely of loops.

Loop Library Copyright Question. Posted April 18th, 2012 in Audio

Soooo....

I downloaded this sample/loop pack from Peremiter Loops some time ago and im enjoying it so far, however: I was wondering if I could upload some songs that contains these loops to Newgrounds.

From the README:

Perimeter Sound Arts, as Licensor, grants you, the Licensee, a limited, nonexclusive right to use this loop sample content for your own individual use as producer or writer/co-writer. You are free to use this content in your own original compositions without restriction. None of this content may be resold or redistributed as loops, samples, or music beds unless it is integrated into your own works without written consent from Perimeter Sound. Please also note that your usage license for these loop samples cannot be sold or transferred to anyone else, pursuant to local/federal/national/international laws.

The reason I ask is that I know Garageband loops are not allowed on Newgrounds, but are loops from other places the same thing?

The way I see it, you could use a stock compressor and spend a few minutes and you would get kinda the same sound, but it seems like a reasonable plugin you could just quickly put on a track if your in a hurry.

But its definatly not a "Do-all" plugin.

Pitch - I can tell. But the rest?

duplicate the same vocal track several times and add differnt pitch effects to them, try to make a chord out of it.
After that you spread all of the different vocal tracks into a stereo field to give it that "overpowering" feel.

It probably wont sound exactly the same, but it should get you close.

Also: Flanger effects.

Yeah, but they can cut that part off...

Not if your clever, like putting it in the drop if your making dubstep or place it in such a way that if they did cut it out, the overall quality of the song diminishes greatly.

Now more on the specific side. Drums:
- What's the whole concept behind drums ? To me sounds like some big noisy rock/ metal concept.
- Rhythm, structure and concept. Do there exist "breaks" like in more classical drumming or is like dance music ?

I dont really know the science behind the uasge of 140bpm, but the entire point is to create a groove, something that make the listener headbang slowly, this is mostly done by putting a kick on the 1 and a snare 3.
As for the second part, it really depends on the song, they dont generally use any form of breaks, but as I said before: it depends on the song and what type of feel you want it to have.

The typical dubstep piece puts a lot of faith into the groove, but newer songs have started to blend in drum and bass elements.

This guy could help to shed some light onto any specific basseline you want to create, granted its more tailored for electro house, a lot of the stuff he talks about can be used in whatever song or genre you want to do.
