Anyone remember when they got their first set of nice headphones and the quality difference they had over the pos ones you grew up with?

I remember when I first got some decent Phillips earbuds, thinking they were good, then I got some Skullcandys and I was like "Wow!"

Anyone remember that feeling?

Yeah, I used to use earbuds at the 20$ price range (im kinda surprised how well my mixes came out considering) then I started to study media production and our school was stacked with lower-end sennheisers (I cant remember what kind) and everything changed .
I was stationed as a cameraman for a multi-camera live production and we used a two-way intercom system to communicate with the producer (the guy who shout "camera 2! Now camera 5!) and unfortunately we only had about 3 headphones with mics so I was stuck using the sennheisers (REALLY limited the communication from the mixer to me) but the sound was just incredible even if we used an age-old mixer i could hear like every nuance of the producers voice.

So i promptly "borrowed" them for a while until I could afford my own pair.

And that, kids, is how I fell in love with Sennheisers.

You know, if I could play everything I wrote for bass perfectly I'd be one hell of a bassist! Same with guitar, but I don't care much about my guitar playing as long as I can play some shit.

Im the exact oposite, im a pretty good instrumentalist and i can play pretty much anything on bass and guitar (i have a limited skill on the piano) but i absolutely suck at composing infront of a computer.
I can write whie using an instrument and i know the theory, im just unable to translate it to midi.

I dunno, ive been checking some other pages on Urørt and nobody else seems to have this much of a gap between listeners and downloads.

Yeah, I've got EQs on every mixer channel I use, Low-pass-ing everything that doesn't have bass at the lowest point before quality of the sound is lost and bass elements around the 20-30hz range, depending. As for waveforms looking like a sausage, that's a pretty interesting take on it, I'll keep a look out for that.

I might as well post my secret weapon here.
Use it subtly and you'll get some pretty awesome mixes.

I checked out your profile and you are ost defiantly approved.
Try searching for specific tags that relate to your song, like if it was uploaded yesterday you would be able to see it unger the genre and how many stars (its score) it has.

Thats a good thing, if it sounds good then it is good.
When it comes down to specifics i really suggest checking out the frequency response of every individual instrument and try to figure out what frequencies you need and what you dont, a good tip is: High-pass EVERYTHING, you really dont need any frequencies below 20hz no matter what genre your making, if you dont do this then in most cases the lower-end ends up getting muffled.

I also learned from Dadalife that a good mix should look something like a sausage when viewed through an EQ.

Just rap the way it feels most comfortable, it been working for me for years.

I do LIKE some animes like Ghost In The Shell (Yoko Kanno inspires me) and Afro Samurai (Samuel L Jackson makes everything awesome) but I cant say the same about most animes.

I want to mix those two genre's when i sing because I'm a huge girly girl screamo singa.

But I'm not sure what it changes, I read it gives more quality sound to loud music like err... death metal
but screamo is relatively softer then death metal and so is electronica unless i play it on a huge stage.

Tube amps are generally warmer then solid-state amps, I guess it really comes down what sonic aesthetic you want, if you want a colder, more "high pitch", then i wouldnt go for a tube.
Im a pretty huge fan of Marshalls amps, they do have some lower-end amps that sound amazing for their price, ive been playing everything from jazz to djent metal on them and they just sound amazing.

So I would go for it, it would give some pretty interesting nuances under your vocals.

ALSO: Lower-end solid state amps generally sound like shit, so if you have a lot of money, go for a solid-state.
If not, then go for a tube.

Strange things

So, I recently uploaded a WIP piece (Not gonna say what piece it is, nor where its uploaded) and in my DAW (Logic Pro 9) it barely has any bass in it, but when i export and upload it, it suddenly has a lot more bass in it.

Any idea why this is? Im pretty sure it has something to do with my export settings, but I honesty dont know.
The reason why i want to know why is because i could compensate in my mixing for this.

Amen to that, I like to mix a Low-pass and the scream filter, i generally put an LFO on the lowpass and an envelope on the scream filter just to put some extra movement.

Ive found that granular synths can give some awe-inspiring drops and wobbles (Check out the music from Eskmo and Amon Tobin for some examples) and im still working on finding some good grooves for club-oriented dubstep, of course, using the typical dubstep kick-snare combo @ 128 bpm seems to have some good results.

At 5/13/12 02:40 AM, NoNeVERNoTEvERFoREVR wrote: Hello! I was wondering if you could help me get started making electronic music on my Macbook. What are some good softwares to use? I'd be recording largely using samples to start, rather than live recording or the like. I'm starting up a small music project with a friend based on making electronic music, and I think that I should try making some on my own, too (or at least get familiar with the technology)

Garageband is a pretty good place to start to learn the basics, it does all you want according to this paragraph and more (it has bukt in instruments for you to mess around with using "Midi", its not something you have to record live, istead you could use your mouse to "put in" notes).

I'd like to keep things free to start, because I'm not entirely sure what I'll need at the moment. For example, I don't exactly remember which software he records on, and there might be some trouble sending my songs to him if they're not compatible with his music software, so might hold off on paying for programs for now. (This begs the question: will I have any trouble sending songs to my friend that he can open and alter on his PC? I'll have to ask what he records on soon...)

While Garageband files are not compatible with PC software you can bypass this by sending each track to him as an mp3 or .wav, its not ideal, but for a starting project it should be more then enough.

Also, where could I find good advice about making electronic music this way, or about making it on a mac, or about how to use the best software for this situation?

Thanks!

Youtube, no joke, is probably the best, theres tons of beginners tutorials for garageband explaining the layout and workflow.

Also: I suggest not using the loop browser that follows with garageband, you wont learn anything that way, theres a lot of youtubers who only use them and the end result just sounds... bad.
