Topic: where to get flash

Don't say stuff like this on the BBS. Discussion of piracy etc is forbiden.

99% of all the flash artists on NewGrounds use Adobe Flash. You can get the free trial there or buy the full thing. However, Flash is pretty expensive so you might be interested in some alternatives. First off is the student version of flash(NB: You have to be student in the USA or Canada for this and you can not make profit off your works). You can also buy older or used versions of flash for alot cheaper than the huge $700. You might be able to find some of these by searching: Macromedia Flash Or Adobe Flash.

There are not only adobe programs. There are also some cheaper, but not as good, versions out there. Heres a list:

SWiSH Max - $100 (Free Trial)
ToonBoom - $399 (Free Trial)
LiveSWF - Free
KoolMoves - $59 (Free Trial)
SoThink - $85 (Free Trial)
Anime Studio - $49(Pro - $179) (Free Trial)

Once you've got yourself a program head over to the flash tutorial section and start learning flash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Press ctrl + F3 to bring up the properties window. Then select your MC. Just underneath where it says "Properties" it will have a text field saying "<instance name>" Change that to whatever you desire.

Having a knowledge of c++ will really help with things such as variables and if statements etc as they are pretty similar. If you get CS3 then you can choose between AS3 and AS2. Seeing as AS3 is newer you will probably want to learn that so you would have to go with CS3.

Not nesseceraly. If there was someone to organize it all then people would know clearly what they are doing. This whole project has flaws, i know. But it is about the learning process and things like that more than the outcome.

Also to get around the whole "enourmous swf" problem thing there are actually various ways to get around this such as putting different sections in different swf files or something like this. Then loading each one when it comes to the time to use it.

Not only that - his code is wrong.
Mine is sufficent. Your saying onClipEvent(load){ - that would mean it only sees if its hitTesting when that frame first loads, but you want to be constantly checking for the hitTest. Also i'm pretty sure it should be _root.gotoAndPlay or else it will try to execute that code in the door MC.

Hey,

I've been learning some more of teh c++ and i found a very nice tutorial explaining almost everyline. But there is one line that it doesn't explain, so i don't know what it means so explaining that would be helpful, but also it gives me an error:

"Parse error before '>'"

This is the line:

reinterpret_cast<HMENU>(static_cast<INT_PTR>(id)),

The "advanced" users are more or less teaching the basic users stuff as well so its a big learning process. The tutorials will be more percific for the game but also be able to transfer to other things.

You can't at the moment - like i said, really this is just for your thoughts on the idea

Cecemal - I can't say excatally as there is no real way of measuring so if you show me some samples i will be able to tell you if you qualify or not. You, obviously, have to be of a high enough standard to teach others. You do not need to know, even if you are programming, about online capabilities etc although it would be very helpful. Its more or less going to be the best people out of the "advanced" interest i get, as long as they are up to the standard.

Topic: Project Noob: Flash - your thoughts

Posted: 11/07/07 09:57 AM

Forum: Flash

From the title you are probably pretty confused as to what this is all about so i will explain.

The idea

The idea of Project Noob: Flash is to, in its simplest form, to take a couple of more advanced coders and artists/animators and a bunch of people with just a basic knowledge of these things. Once the site is up, unsure of what domain i'm going to go for at the moment but i've nearly finished the design, the fun will commence. The ultimate aim is create a huge flash, hopefully online, game. The more advanced people which i mentioned earlier will be in the senior positions and will provide tutorials etc. which only those "noobs" who are taking part can view. This is the "noobs" main source of learning as well as talking to the advancded people. Basically from here everyone who's part of it works together to build parts of the game and bring it all together. There is more to the idea than just this but this is the basics.

What will you be getting?

Advanced

You will be the power behind the whole project resulting in the largest paycut. I have not decided on the numbers that will be taken on or anything so i can't say how much. But it will probably twice/three times more than what the "noobs" will be getting. However you will have to be commited.

"Noobs"

You will not be getting so much money, only a small percentage, however you will be getting a hell of a lot out of this. You will get access to exclusive tutorials and have time spent helping you develop things. You will get hands on experience on a large multiplayer game teaching you how to do all aspects of it resulting in hopefully, one day, you being able to create your own. Again i ask you to be commited.

How to sign up

This thread was not created to get people to sign up but for your ideas. But i shall give a breif outline. When i am looking for people i will choose who is taken on myself. If its too hard to choose i may give you a short interview so i can get an idea of whos most sutible. I'm afraid i cannot take on any complete noobs as this would make the job the advanced people alot harder and more time consuming. If you are wanting to take it on i ask you have a basic knowledge of the interface and how to use flash. If you want to actionscript i ask that you have a basic knowledge of it and know how to make buttons, basic movement, hitTests etc.

To become an advanced member i ask that you show me some exampels of your work so i can judge how good you are.

Final notes

Basically, i just want to know what you guys think. Feel free to post any querys you have. The main reservation i have is that i won't be able to get enough advanced people. The money will be coming from advertisments and donations. Once the game is up then there may well be other sources of income too like subscriptions.

Thanks

UnknownFury

Say you called scene 2 Scene 2, which I think is the default when you create a new scene (don't know, don't use scenes) then your code should look like this

on (release) {
_root.gotoAndStop("Scene 2", 1);
}

I believe that still won't work. The scene thing only works in the root. Therefore you have to make a function in the root:

function changeScene(){
_root.gotoAndStop("Scene 2", 1);
};

Then in the button:

on(release){
_root.changeScene();
}

That should work ;)
