It is indeed, but you have until July 1st. Why rush it, take your time and make it really good. If you can do a satisfactory flash in less than a week imagine what you could add to the quality with much more time.

You can do as many quotes as you want. Although it can only be one quote per movie. Like, you can't have two quotes in the same movie.

That doesn't matter, as I've said before, don't worry if someone has taken one already. I'm glad that you're still joining but I want to make this very clear:

You can pick a line that someone else has already picked

I don't mind if I get multiple movies with the same line. It may happen that there will be multiple versions of the same line within the colab.

Plus, I'm hoping the competition will help people try even harder to make a quality movie.

The only thing I don't want is if you see like 5 people having chosen a line, it would probably increase your chances if you choose one that has not been picked (which may be why you changed the line you chose in which case great :) )

But just for people who may think that once all the lines are chosen they can't join: that is notthe case

Isn't there a chance you'll end up with loads of people all doing the same couple of lines? :/

This is definately a possibility, but I'm willing to take that risk because if someone really good comes in and wants to do a specific line but they see it's already taken then I lose that person.

If all else fails then I'll get a bunch of submissions doing the same lines which may not be a bad thing. We'll just have to see.

but iv got Flash CS4?will that be a problem?

It might, I know the conversion from 9 to 8 doesn't work but that may only be when using actionscript in the movie. And it may not be a problem from CS4 to CS3

If I'm not mistaken I believe there is a way to export your work in a lower version of flash. If this exists and you do this just make sure that the movie still works and tell me to do this when you submit.

Hmm, I guess I should have said before:

I won't be adding to that list, what's there is what is to be used. No suggestions please

Famous Last Words Colab Posted May 31st, 2009 in Game Development

Hello newgrounds

I have decided to create the "Famous Last Words" colab. In this colab will be a bunch of clips based around a list of famous last words found below.

Here's the scoop, you will choose one of the famous last words lines found in the list below and create a short, funny movie based around the line.

I would prefer to make the colab have one movie per famous last words line but we'll see how it goes.

Anyone can submit but keep in mind, not everyone will be chosen. I will be using the best of what I get so make it good.

Also, you can make as many as you want but obviously the quality will be better if you focus on one.

Here are some rules:

-It must be funny/amusing etc.
-They should be approximately 30 seconds long (give or take about 10 seconds)
-They MUST include the EXACT line that you've chosen from the famous last words list
-A character MUST die immediately after the line has been said
-No sprites, stick figure movies etc. Basically, the best quality movies will be more likely to get in so put some effort into the art.

Techno Details:

(you may notice some similarities to the sf colab guidelines, that's cuz they were really good suggestions so why wouldn't I follow their lead)
-500x400 stage and 24 FPS
-Use Flash 9 and if there is any actionscript (which I recommend you not use) make sure it's ActionScript 3.0
-put your movie inside a single movie clip on the main timeline.
-make your symbol names "username_symbol" so that there are no conflictions with other symbols that might be named the same

Submitting:

-name the file "username_movietitle.fla"
-send the whole .fla file to tyger_man_006(at)hotmail(dot)com
Don't send me questions with this e-mail, they will be ignored. Please post Any questions them in this thread I will try to answer as many as I can.
Deadline for submissions will be July 1st so you have almost exactly a month to do these. This deadline may change under certain circumstances but this is very unlikely. Do not expect this!

And of course, have fun!

dynamic variable name Posted May 5th, 2009 in Game Development

I need to change the name of a variable during the program

I have this:

for(var i:int = 1; i <= number_of_balls; i++){
	var ball_mc:Bouncers = new Bouncers();
	addChild(ball_mc);

	ball_mc.x = Math.random()*400-50;
	ball_mc.y = Math.random()*300-50;
}

but I need ball_mc to change it's name so it becomes basically

ball_mc1
ball_mc2

depending on what "i" is.

My question is: how do I do that?

AS2 to AS3 conversion Posted May 5th, 2009 in Game Development

what is the AS3 equivalent of this:

manage_bounce(_root["ball_"+x],_root["ball_"+y]);
Response to: Mute button Posted April 25th, 2009 in Game Development

oh, and just to clarify, the mute button function is in the GameSounds class and the event listener I call it with is actually this:

muteButton_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gSounds.muteButtonClick);
Mute button Posted April 25th, 2009 in Game Development

I'm trying to make a mute button in my flash game.

I've got the basic code and as far as I can tell it should work but it doesn't.

All my sound code is in it's own class called GameSounds, I have an instance of this class in the main timeline called gSounds.

This is the code I have for the mute button:

public function muteButtonClick(e:MouseEvent):void
{
	MovieClip(root).muteButton_mc.gotoAndPlay(2);
	if(sndChnnl != null)
	{
		var st:SoundTransform;

		st = new SoundTransform(0);
		sndChnnl.soundTransform = st;
	}

	trace("I've muted");
}

I call this function in the main timeline with this:

muteButton_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, muteButtonClick);

all the mute button should be able to do at this point is mute all the sounds (not unmute them) but for some reason when I click the button the trace "I've muted" appears but nothing gets muted

thoughts? suggestions?

stage, _root and root don't work

Response to: Looping error Posted April 16th, 2009 in Game Development

*sigh* never mind, I got it

Looping error Posted April 16th, 2009 in Game Development

I have some looping code that goes thusly:

public function playMenuMusic():void
{
                     sndChnnl = menuMusic.play();
	sndChnnl.addEventListener(Event.SOUND_COMPLETE, loopMenuMusic);
}

public function loopMenuMusic():void
{
                     sndChnnl.removeEventListener(Event.SOUND_COMPLETE, loopMenuMusic);
	playMenuMusic();
}

this plays the music just fine but then when it gets to the end of the song it gives me this error:

"ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on 'TheClassThisCodeIsIn'/loopMenuMusic(). Expected 0, got 1."

I have no idea what it's finding

Response to: NG Preloader Looping? Posted April 15th, 2009 in Game Development

That's what it does, it's as if you got to the end of the movie and it went back to the preloader. (Which is what would always happen)

If you want it to stop on the rectangle frame type in the ActionScript window:

stop();

this will keep it on the rectangle frame until you tell it to do something else with actionscript (like play();)
but this will loop it back to the preloader.

Adding Medals to my game Posted April 15th, 2009 in Game Development

How?

:)

to make this post longer than just 1 word:
I am making a flash game and I was wondering how/if it's possible for me to make medals avaliable for it. If it is possible how do I do it, if it's not possible what might I have to do to make it possible?

Response to: Transparent Images in Flash Posted April 15th, 2009 in Game Development

you don't do that in flash, you make the background transparent in a different program then import it to flash (I use photoshop)

Response to: Slow If Embedded In Html Posted April 14th, 2009 in Game Development

The game was originally at 60fps so I jacked it up to 120fps but in the browser it refused to go past 65fps... I'm confused. Is there an fps cap in the browser? If that is the case than making my fps higher will not fix this problem

Slow If Embedded In Html Posted April 14th, 2009 in Game Development

OK, I have a flash game that plays exactly how I want it to play when I test it or play the swf file.

However, I have embedded it into my website and all the Time objects seem to move slower than they should.

This only happens in the HTML and I have no idea why this is happening. Has anyone experienced this before/know what to do about it?

Response to: noob q: making a fade in Posted April 14th, 2009 in Game Development

you gotta give more info than that, do you mean with actionscript or just normal timeline animation

and what do you mean fade in, like go from invisible to visible or from dark to light? etc.

Response to: duplicate mc Posted April 14th, 2009 in Game Development

are you using AS2 or AS3?

I am trying to embed my flash program on my website and it works fine but it can't play sound. I am using:

var music:Sound = new Sound(new URLRequest("SoundFile.mp3"));

in the flash to find the file and the sound file is in the same folder.

Any ideas? or do you need more information

Response to: exiting flash window Posted March 31st, 2009 in Game Development

I tried those and they didn't work. I'm just trying to close it, it is not embedded in html.
