Why is it that the Pokemon franchise hasn't really improved in the gameplay sense for so many years. Everyone loved Pokemon red, blue and somewhat yellow. Then gold and silver came out and we were greeted with new experiences but realised we were playing the same game. Then sequel after sequel followed. Crystal, Sapphire and Ruby, Fire Red and Leaf Green, Emerald, Diamond and Pearl and finally, Platinum.
Now, quite an incredible record for Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures inc. There's over 10 games there, although understandably, less than half of them are the same game with slight differences. All released for handheld consoles, excusing the half-assed console version of it like the Gamecube attempt and coliseum spin-off. Other than that, players haven't been introduced to any new gameplay elements in the games. You're still wandering in 4 different directions, catching a now, insane number of creatures and beating the bad guys with the pokemon you levelled up.
Sure, now and then there's a graphical update, new mini-games to try and different ways to explore the world e.g. underwater in Ruby and Sapphire. Other than that, there's been no real improvement. We still hold in our hearts the early pokemon games as fantastic whilst the new ones get less and less interesting to us veterans, so why is Nintendo failing so hard?
I for one don't have a problem that it has to keep to the 'kid' element and don't mind that it can't get anymore graphic or adult, so it doesn't have to increase in that way. Why hasn't there been a console version of Pokemon implemented that sticks to the classic ways of Pokemon but is able to implement a lot more features like changing landscapes, catching pokemon in varied ways, levelling up moves as well as pokemon. Obviously, we'd keep to the original 151 Pokemon but make a whole new adventure.
Am I the only one that would love to see this or is there a public agreement that there should be a console version of a pokemon game that sticks to the whole 'catch them all' with the original 151 Pokemon but less linear gameplay and new features installed.
