(Coder) Project Psychoward... Posted September 23rd, 2009 in Game Development

.:What is the Game About:.

Project Psychoward is a physics-based sidescrolling shooter-rpg. It features psychic powers, 7 different guns, and 7 action-packed locations. The bosses are tough, the enemies are strong, and the puzzles (based around physics) are difficult.

.:Who is Working On It:.

Project Psychoward's team consists of a Game Designer/Artist and a composer, both of which are very talented. Our composer is MarkySpark, who is incredibly talented in music-creation, and I am the artist. (examples can be found here http://www.truploader.com/author/tomocle s and http://www.truploader.com/author/bt_ente rtainment and here http://www.truploader.com/author/preview )

.:Who Are We Looking For:.

We are looking for a skilled coder who knows physics and how to make a shooter, as well as designing a skill tree system, which I would compare directly to upgrading. There will be 7 guns, 7 locations, 4 powers, several kinds of enemies, many subbosses, and many bosses. You will need skill in implimenting a dialogue system, health system, damage mitigation system, and scripted events, to name a few. Past these requirements, I feel we will be fine, though.

.:What is the Timeframe:.

We aim to have this game completed in a month to month and a half at max. If this means making use of prebuilt engines, open-source, or other forms of non-original code, then that is fine, so long as you have permission from the one who made it.

.:What is the Compensation:.

The money to be made from this is going to pay our composer's rent, so you will only get a share if the sponsorship is past 600. If we make this game as high quality as we hope in the timeframe, that should be easy enough.

Response to: Programmers Wanted For Game Project Posted September 5th, 2009 in Game Development

I am writer, designer, AND artist for my own game, and I have found that without something like art or programming to bring your ideas to light, noone else knows what the hell to do with your idea. Get an actual talent, that way you are pulling your load, because there isnt enough money to go around for someone to have such an indirect role.

If you AT LEAST could make concept sketches and storyboards, could make design documents, write the plot, detail all of the levels, detail all of the sprites that will be needed, lay out a plan of all the different parts of the game (main menu, ingame, options, credits, etc.), and any other thing you could possibly document, then you will be useful. But you need to make all of this before you even have the programmers and artists and composers begin to work, and afterwards you need to be able to clearly label exactly what each person will be doing each week, and even come up with plans for a release date based upon the progress you desire on the game.

That right there is the work of a designer, unless you have the talent to do art or other parts, in which you can probably skip half of the steps because you know what you are supposed to be doing.

Response to: Hiring Animator Posted September 5th, 2009 in Game Development

he said he is willing to do 300$ people. Cut him some slack, he isnt a professional.

Response to: Hiring Animator Posted September 5th, 2009 in Game Development

ikool, get a job and you will find that what he set out is pretty reasonable. time-wise, that is. As for the money, 200$ for 3-4 minutes, in a 2-week timeframe means that the animator will be doing 1:30 to 2 minutes of animation per week, at 24 fps. When you break that down, the player will be doing 480 frames per day, or approx. 4-6 hours per day. That is 60 hours total for a mere 200$. You better fork up a good 5 dollars per hour or more, so 300 dollars would be a lot more fair. Depending on the quality of what you desire though, 8 dollars or even 10 dollars per hour may be neccesary.

that person better just get someone else, because you are nowhere near good enough to be doing commissions. Get practice, before you try getting money or respect, if the commission is free.

in other words, you will be just fine. :) You have more to work with than i do. >.>

I would definitely suggest taking some hints from Castlecrashers on Xbla. Its a wonderful game, with great feeling, and I feel it applies well to this game as a reference.

You've been through 2 coders and have yet to get any engines set up ? That's rough.

seriously. I am a little bit spooked about the reliability of my next coder, as I really hope that this trend doesnt somehow continue. I was thinking that it might be what I am demanding, but to tell the truth, all I even ask for to begin with is a basic tower-defense engine. That doesnt even sound challenging for an experienced coder. ugghh.... -_-

You're right, I dont think this guy will be dependable. I will be a bit warier with this next one, just in case he happens to have the same "work-ethic" as the other two.

About 4 weeks ago, my coder disappeared. Apparently on vacation for the next week, he has now been missing for a month. The game barely has an engine set up, with mostly graphics and music created. The problem is that, well, I just plain dont have the time to wait any longer. I do have someone on backup for this project, but if I throw him in too soon, the more experienced coder may turn up, hence causing some problems. I would be seen as impatient, as we have already lost a coder to this same exact problem. (although he had problems even doing the coding for the game, making it a lot more justified)

What should I do? (wait for the coder, or bring in the new one?)

Response to: Any Original Pokemon Fans out there Posted August 10th, 2009 in Game Development

Ah, I loved the originals. I remember playing red and blue for days on end. Venosaur has to be my favorite, hands down.

Anyways, you do realize your example is a beat-em-up, right? I personally think you could do way better than that. Try something creative, or make a system that doesnt involve smashing buttons.

Response to: New Collab Rules Posted August 5th, 2009 in Game Development

ah, well, that's good enough. Dont even remember that we had those stickies, been so used to understanding the rules. :P

Response to: New Collab Rules Posted August 5th, 2009 in Game Development

why hasnt this thread been stickied? Someone needs to rewrite the first post in a sticky thread. Anyone who is complaining about these rules is an idiot. How can anyone expect a decent collab from someone who cant make something decent on his own? Great reason for the raised BA, so shut up about it.

Response to: Artist/Writer for hire! Posted August 5th, 2009 in Game Development

oh, hey there, you obviously know something i dont. Or maybe not since i already have begun work with someone who contacted me about just this. Keep your fucking useless remarks to yourself, you stupid piece of shit.

Anyways, as it is, I am not immediately available for the art part of anything, due to being occupied with a commission someone sent, but I can still help you to design or write a storyline, or even help you to just add some placeholder art. As i see these aspects as nearly useless without art or anything to back it up, no compensation will be neccessary, i am just glad to help. :)

Dan doesn't sponsor anything so I'd recommend not PM'ing him.

You should go here!! Sign up and you can sell your game easily.

no, you dont get it. He was saying to ask them about selling his game.

@OP: I believe you do have to pay tax on it. The sponsor will probably request of you to fill out a w9-form if you make over a certain amount of money. It is standard with partnerships where you make money.

Response to: Have a Story Posted July 29th, 2009 in Game Development

trust me, if you are looking to JUST be a writer, you need to be REALLY good.

BTW, I was not saying it was a bad idea, I was saying that the premise you wrote for it was shit. Dont write a premise if you cant make it sound as good as or better than the actual story.

Wanna know what you should do? Learn to code and make your idea into a game. Thats how you will get a team to help you make it. As far as flash animations go, most people go completely solo or work with a good friend of theirs. (even sometimes being their sibling)

Response to: Have a Story Posted July 28th, 2009 in Game Development

um...that sounds incredibly cliche. You didnt describe the characters, what makes your Indiana Jones knockoff unique, etc. so all we are left with is an uninteresting premise. If you want people to be interested, you better make sure your pitch is ace. Noone will steal your story.

5) Current members in your group

1. Looking for a Coder

2. I am an Artist

3. I have quite an ample list of works, if you request it, but for now, here is a few:

5. MarkySpark, as our composer, and me, as our artist and writer.

6. Also needed a sixth: We have a fully written idea, with a storyline, gameplay figured out, etc. so we are looking for a coder who wants to get on board with a team, not lead one.

Response to: Power of Three - Summer Event Posted May 17th, 2009 in NG News

I am an artist, now with a coder, looking for a musician. We will be needing dark-toned, action-paced, and even epic music for the game, so if you can do those, please contact me with some examples of your musical work. If you want examples of my or my coder's work, send a pm requesting them. Otherwise, here is my deviantart:

and a little example of my stuff:

http://www.truploader.com/view/323048 (a collab menu I worked on, but now is just a showcase of animation)

send a pm if you are interested in working with us, or want to know more about the game itself.

seriously. If all you have to offer is an idea, storyline, or to be director, you are utterly useless in a 3-man group. Get a more useful talent, please. (not saying story-writer is a useless position, but even I can do that along with my art)

Response to: Power of Three - Summer Event Posted May 15th, 2009 in NG News

I am an artist currently looking for a coder and a musician. I have a nearly fully developed idea for the game, including a story, character sketches for all three opposing characters, and even some enemy designs. For more information on this, contact me through pm. I have a lot drawn for this already, so feel free to request to see them.

It's mostly the people who are fairly new to flash who participate in collaborations. Not always, there are exceptions, but for the most part. People who are better with flash or more experienced generally lean towards the solo project or coder/animator aspect of flash while the less experienced prefer working with people as practice so they can make an animation but the animation doesn't have to be a full length animation.

You guys kind of missed the point of what I asked about....I was asking why it is that people ONLY flock to collaborations?

My Animation Tests thread failed: this tells me that either people could give a shit less about improvement through small short animations, or that they are too embarassed to show them (or dont want to), which isnt a good sign either way.

My Animation Warzone thread failed: you guys obviously dont want to do anything out of the plain ol' collab. :\

Barely anyone participates in my screenshot thread: means that either you have nothing to show, or you dont really care about much more than submitting your creation.

These threads work so well in even stick animation communities, so why are newgrounders, who number in the millions, so resistant/lazy?

sory to not participate in the other stuff in the thread, but why do so little animators actually want to participate in anything but collabs? I constantly try to get them to do more, like my Animation Warzone! thread: http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1044 518 and my Animation Tests Thread: http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1045 510

If you wish to post an animation, I strongly advise you to comment on one of the other tests posted in the thread as well, simply to make sure that the goal of this thread is fulfilled. With that aside, here is a run cycle I made yesterday:
