Just two more days left to vote for the Best of July! Visit your account page to see if you are part of the voting pool this month.

deadspread83 is having an art contest to design a Newgrounds ad for the back page of his comic book!

Zero Punctuation has announced the Stonking Great Game Contest! If you're a ZP fan, definitely check this out and have your game personally judged by Yahtzee.

London Meet V starts tomorrow! Sadly, I won't be there.

I WILL be at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle from September 4th-6th, though! We'll be showing Castle Crashers on the PS3, as well as the upcoming yet-to-be-named Game 3!

You can watch a little video from the San Diego Comic-Con booth, with a guest appearance by EggfordTheEgg, what now?

BTW, Zack Snyder, director of the Watchmen movie, was asked about HappyHarry's spoof during a Comic-Con Q&A and he apparently loves it.

The next stop after PAX is our second annual Behemoth booth at the Tokyo Game Show. "Game, it's so energetic!" Will any NG folks be there?

Some movies you probably missed this week:

Back from Comic-Con and still catching up on emails and PMs! I want to write about the past week, but there is so much STUFF that I feel like I don't have time to do it justice right now. Lots of people came out and lots of fun was had... Our booth had record turn-out so every year things just keep getting bigger and bigger.

You can see lots of pics at the Behemoth DevBlog!

Also sirevil posted more pics! Yes, that sirevil from the 2005 campus promo contest!

Because of the constant flow of new people through NG, I always need to explain: Back in 2002, Dan Paladin and I made a web game called Alien Hominid. We then formed the Behemoth and made a console version. Since then we made Castle Crashers, which has become a runaway hit on XBLA and is now headed to PS3! Every year we have a booth at Comic-Con in San Diego, where lots of NG folks show up and hang out.

More news after I get settled in. Power of Three is ongoing and the NG team has big stuff in the works. The foundation is being built for an exciting fall!

BTW I've seen a lot of reviews complain about the difficulty of When Pigs Fly, but I think you need to give it a shot. You start on the same screen where you died and have unlimited lives. I was able to beat it just fine!

Retro should be a tag, since a retro game can fit any of the gameplay genres.

Topic: Flash Genres & Tags - Wanna help?

Posted: 07/14/09 02:00 PM

Forum: Flash

We finally got the system back up and running to assign genres and tags to Flash submissions. I've been going through some older submissions on the site and setting their status and tags and it got me thinking, this is the perfect job for someone who wouldn't feel resentful about spending time doing gruntwork for the sake of the NG archives!

So I'm looking for someone who is good at determining game genres and tag info, and feels excited about the prospect of doing so. If you're this person, feel free to PM me with "FLASH ORGANIZATION" as the subject! I will probably look over your account activity and send you a list of games to categorize as a sort of quiz. If I don't reply at all, it's because I got a lot more responses than expected and got all overwhelmed, but I'll try to be polite and let people know if the slot has been filled.

In case your wondering, the genre info will eventually be used to categorize Flash in the GAMES and MOVIES sections, while tags will play a whole in a crazy new collection & series system.

Pencil art such as this is fine:

But a lot of the pencil art we've seen, even some decent stuff, still feels more suitable for the user pages and not the main listing.

The Real Silent Hill Meetup is happening today and tomorrow! If you live near Centralia, PA, you can come visit a town with an ever-burning mine fire and hang out with a bunch of local NG folks.

If you live in Boston, check out the Boston meetup thread.

We've been watching the Art Portal and making changes to fine-tune it. Please note that works in progress and pencil sketches should only be showcased on your user page and not included in the public Art Portal listing. You also now need at least four submissions before you are eligible for scouting and approved artists can only scout two users per day at the moment, so use those scouts wisely!

The Power of Three summer event is ongoing and there are some amazing games in the works! HappyHarry and Egoraptor have been at the office this past week working on art for their games. Afro-Ninja was here for a few days developing the engine for his game with Ego. The-Swain was here as well, fleshing out plans with PsychoGoldfish and Liljim, also visiting this week. I'll be emailing all the teams when we're ready to take the next big step forward. For now, keep plugging away so you have the potential for some good teaser screenshots!

Over 8,500 people filled out the survey!

Here are some glimpses of data from the people who answered:

Male: 95.9%
Female: 4.1%

Age

Under 16: 28.8%
16-17: 26.8%
18-24: 38.7%

Game Consoles

Xbox 360: 45.6%
PS3: 21.1%
Wii: 50.5%
DS: 60.5%
PSP: 32.2%

In other news, ThoseSneakyFrench has been putting together quite the NG computer case!

Also my apologies to Rob for bumping his Art Portal announcement post. I wasn't going to, but everyone was giving me a hard time for not posting the following plug:

We have a booth at the Wizard World convention in Philadelphia this weekend! If you come by the Philly convention center today or tomorrow, you can meet Egoraptor, MindChamber, Luis, Stamper, JohnnyUtah, Swain, HappyHarry, Liljim, Afro-Ninja, Tomamoto, SardonicSamurai, Jonas, 36Holla, and all sorts of other fine NG folks!

Today our booth was visited by guys like Chakra-X and Absent! Many more NG regulars will be popping up tomorrow, we are booth 402, on the right as you enter.

The results everyone is seeing are their own results. I think they run the stats on a delay, because when I try to view the results, it says there are zero responses. My guess is real-time data would be too hard on their database, so every so often a script will run that updates the available results. I might be the only person who can see them, I'm not sure.

Sorry about it not being the best survey site... It's been hard to find a site for multi-question surveys. We used to have a poll system on NG but it has probably been broken for a loooong time now.

Every once in a while, we like to update our KNOWLEDGE about what the average Newgrounds visitor is like. We can use this information to get better and more relevant ad campaigns, but it's also fun for us to know just who is browsing NG. None of this info will point back to you - it's a survey I set up on a third party website.

EDIT... I have yanked the survey. I'm under the impression the survey site was not logging results from people who didn't have accounts there. So basically I just wasted my time creating a 23 question poll and some of you just wasted your time answering it. Sorry about that.

So instead of filling out a poll, go watch this:

Now I'm looking again and I can't find anyone who offers that service. I find lots of sites that let you host a free single question poll, but none that offer free multi-question poll hosting. Does anyone know of one?

Ok I won't be considering any more banners for prizes!

I've decided to award the $30 store credit to BornToByte, because he sent in the first banner that got me to put together the rotation, had nice original visuals, and managed not to offend all the ad-blocker people.

I have been getting so many complaints from offended ad-blocker people, it's insane... There must be 1000s of people running it. I wish they could just take the silly ads with a grain of salt and not floor me with complaints about it... Shows how douchey and entitled they really are.
