Topic: Stagknight Contest, Albino Code

Posted: 05/12/06 10:48 AM

Forum: NG News

I recently posted about Newgrounds making an appearance in an upcoming slasher comedy, Stagknight.

To show our continued appreciation, we are now hosting a one month Stagknight Game Contest!

The goal is to create a GORY and FUNNY game where you play the role of a knight in modern times, on a killing rampage (most likely in the woods). The best game will be featured on Stagknight.com and the winner will receive some fun movie memorabilia. Please read the official contest page for more info!

In other film news, my friend Pete's cousin (who happens to be an albino) has just released a short film spoof on The Da Vinci Code, called The Albino Code! It's a play on the albino assassin from The Da Vinci Code and brings to light some issues faced by those with albinism!

I was supposed to be at E3 right now, but I stayed home to work on all the 101 projects we have going on. On the downside, I didn't get to meet up with Shok in LA (see his post below - he just interviewed Ben Watkins of Juno Reactor fame last night!) but on the upside, I am here to post the winners for best of April!

Between two monthly prizes AND Pico Day, we have several authors who won multiple awards, so I'll be consolidating everything into one set of prize packs that I send out all at once.

I like it! The biggest problem is that we can't use a copyrighted song for our official intro, though. :(

We've been toying around with official themes for a while now... The one on the PSP movies is the closest thing to official at the moment. An intro like this would need something more drawn out. This has some great potential!!!

First off, thank you Evark for acknowledging that I do stuff! :)

I come to work between 7-8am every morning (sometimes even 5am when I can't sleep) and I don't leave until between 8-9pm. Newgrounds is an unhealthy obsession and pretty much consumes every part of my being. I know all that work doesn't always show on the front end of the site, but it keeps the site running and the results of the office won't be seen immediately - we have a lot of projects going on over here.

I'm also making a console game and a new game that I'll be submitting to NG in the near future.

Our ads pay low rates by industry standards due to the nature of our content and NG's long-time reputation for being "naughty", but the sheer volume of our traffic makes up for it and is able to support the growing staff and contests.

At 5/5/06 10:03 PM, idOcrEatING wrote: Some time ago I sent an Email to Tom Fulp about how it would be cool to have a competition for the people of Newgrounds to design their own boss the Behemoth game, Ye old Sidescroller (as it is currently known, to my knowledge) with the idea of a prize being having your boss in the game. Unfortunately he never replied, or indeed probably never read it due to the masses of Emails he probably has.

Sorry for not getting back to you - the idea of a boss competition is very cool and it's very tempting to give it a shot. We're running into the same problems as most major studios at the moment - we have to decide whether to acknowledge ideas from fans, at the risk of people trying to claim ownership of ideas we already have. For example, we wouldn't want someone to say "You should have a giant dragon in the game." and then try to sue us when we have a giant dragon in the game and they don't get credit for it. So many people think they have an amazing unique idea, when it's something we've already thought of. Other people have amazing unique ideas that we could actually use... So maybe we just need to draft up some legal entry form that clearly states your ideas become our property once you submit them, and credit is up to our own discretion.

For example, we've already explored lots of ideas for enemies who "power up" and smaller enemies who ride on larger enemies. So you could see something in the new game that seems a derivative of your idea, when in fact it was our own original creation without any external suggestions.

I do want to get fans more involved in our game development, considering that was a big goal when this whole thing started!

Topic: Pico Day Winners

Posted: 05/07/06 06:06 AM

Forum: NG News

It has been really tough to pick 10 winners for Pico Day, we received a ton of great submissions. The final decisions were partly based on user votes and partly based on how relevant the submissions were to the Pico story.

Due to the quality of the entries, I added a second grand prize for "Best Game" with an additional value of $2000. So with no further ado...

Best Game ($2000) - Pico's School Remake

Best Movie ($2000) - Pico vs. Convict

2nd ($1000) - the Pico Day Anthem

3rd ($500) - Picoday-Penillian Battle

4th ($250) - Pico's School the Movie

5th ($250) - Pico: Therapy

The remaining five winners have been ranked based on user votes. Each has won $50 and a t-shirt.

6th ($50) - Pico SimDate

7th ($50) - Pico - The After Years

8th ($50) - Pico's Last Stand

9th ($50) - Pico's Return

10th ($50) - Newgrounds Museum 2

Near-winners included Fiberglass Monkey, Pico, NG Guardian, P.I.C.O. and Pico's Day to Die.

I wish we could just give prizes to everyone, but this is the list we came up with. Congratulations to the winners, and a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated! We'll have to do it again next year. :)

Forum: NG News

Edmund McMillen, creator of Gish and The Badlands recently sat down for an interview with Animation Magazine. Go read it! He said some stuff in there that totally made my day. :)

You can also see pics from Edmund winning the 2005 IGF in the NG Lit section!

After almost three years of episodes without getting a front page nod until the end, Erik the Juiceman finally has a series page. I regret overlooking this series for so long, it makes me wonder how many other great series have been overlooked (I can already say there are a lot). Another classic but overlooked series, Zomborg Apocalypse, now has a series page as well!

Eligible users only have a few more days to vote on the BEST OF APRIL! Winners will be announced next week! I still need to send out prize packs for BEST OF MARCH, and I still need to decide on the winners for Pico Day and announce those as well. It's a HARD DECISION, we received a ton of great submissions!

To respond to people who are wondering what the surprise is...

I know lots of people were disappointed that it wasn't bigger and better, but check out Resident Pico. I also finally released Pico's School to the Portal, and fixed it to be playable on faster computers (it was impossible before).

There is another Pico game on the way featuring artwork by Mindchamber, but I didn't program it. It won't be part of the contest judging since it has the unfair advantage of MC's art. :) I'm HOPING it will make it in time for Pico Day!

Happy Pico Day everyone!

I spent last night in Atlantic City to celebrate my birthday, but was excited to get back today and put together the Pico Day collection page, as well as unveil some of my own little Pico Day surprises! I really do feel guilty that I couldn't release something like Pico 2 for the occasion, but I'm happy to see all the support Pico is getting today!

I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been submitting Pico Flash... It's the best Birthday present a guy could ever have! Despite the lack of a finished Pico sequel, Pico remains the closest project to my heart and that is one of the reasons why it has been so hard to properly follow-up Pico's School after all these years.

Thanks again to everyone who has participated in Pico Day! I look forward to what has yet to come!

I just had a thought about how Nintendo really took everyone by surprise by changing the name of the Revolution to "Wii." Then I realized that a lot of smart domain squatters probably jumped all over "wii" domain names the day Nintendo made the announcement... I was right!

Search register.com for catchy names that include "wii", tons of them are taken. You can still find some good ones, though... If you want to start a Wii fan site.

One downside to the name "wii" - the NG Portal search requires more than three characters per search term, so you won't be able to search for submissions about the Wii. Scary, eh?

Al Gore has been on a press junket promoting his stance on tech-savvy and financially prudent ways to save the environment. He's on the front cover of the new Wired. Basically, if we all manage to save the environment, he'll probably take credit for it. So I think South Park was playing off that... Create a threat, promote yourself as the person who can stop it, and when the threat doesn't exist, take credit for fixing it.

Although I personally do think the environmental threat exists. :)

I loved the 70s synth horror music, though, when the sillouette of Manbearpig was lurking about.

To generate some extra buzz, I decided to FINALLY start releasing my old Pico stuff through the Portal. Now they can finally be a part of "the system" here on Newgrounds.

I started with Darnell and Nene. Try not to blam 'em!

And I do have a lot of regrets about not celebrating Pico Day with remakes of all the old classics and the unveiling of Pico 2... But hey, there's always Pico Day 2007! Alright, I shouldn't tease about that.

Slick! Why am I starting to feel like we need a full-time mobile division. :)

I can't believe I testing so many old games and never tested Pico... There's definitely potential for great games on the PSP, you just NEED to avoid scrolling background, so stuff like a cross between Final Fantasy and Zelda (static screens, cinematic RPG battles) would be a great fit. So would some things with simple, non-full-screen scrolling, I suppose. I'm so conflicted between trying to make a PSP-specific game or not!

It all depends on how much of the site we reformat before launch, and if we implement any new features or save that for later.

The CSS template that will drive the layout is complete. The Portal view page is completely visualized. The front page and forums are close behind. We need to address stuff like the collection pages, the Portal main page, the audio portal, some general pages, etc...

I want to roll NG Lit into NGMag so it's all one glorious literary mecha that matches the look and feel of the rest of the site. We launched it with a unique look and feel, which was cool at the time, but now we're more interested in maintaing a consistent experience (with bells and whistles along the way to keep it fun).

Posted: 04/26/06 09:47 AM

Forum: NG News

In the new issue of Wired, they have a big section about the video boom on the web. On page 124, they feature "The New Networks", sites that are competing with television. All of the sites on the list are video-centric, with one exception: Newgrounds!

The blurb states, "The largest collection of Flash animation on the Net, Newgrounds hosts nearly 80 animated serials, hundreds of cartoons and dozens of themed collections."

It's nice to see Flash animation get some recognition among all the video hype! The following pages featured different on-line entertainment, ranging from animation to music and documentaries (sadly, games weren't featured). Their animation section highlights Newgrounds regulars such as Broken Saints, David Firth, MINDistortion, Weebl and Adam Phillips!

In other news... The CSS redesign is currently compliant with all browsers, including the beta IE7! We've got a lot of good momentum and it's trucking along. Pico Day is this Sunday and I have a non-Pico game in the works that will hopefully be unleashed soooooon... I'm really excited to share it and yes, it's completely evil.

The biggest news, of course, is that Jerry Jackson has won over enough fans to get his own page!
