New Gun Law In Texas... Problem? Posted September 4th, 2013 in Politics

In Texas (effective September 1st, 2013), anyone 18 and over without a criminal record can take a Concealed Hand-Gun License Course that takes 4 to 6 hours to complete instead of 10 to 15 hours. Also to renew the license, there's now an option to renew it online over taking a renewal course/exam.

http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/tarrant/New-law-trims-requirements-for-concealed-handgun-license-222110601.html

Something tells me this could be a problem, especially when it comes to renewing the license. "CHL holders can renew their permit online with no continuing education required."

Do you think this raises concern? On one hand, more law abiding citizens are able to take a CHL course because of the reduction of time. On the other hand, the instructors have to cram everything in a shorter period of time, which people could miss when taking the course. But really the biggest problem I have with this is renewing the license online with no further education... You have got to be kidding me!

Response to: Your position on the death penalty Posted August 23rd, 2013 in Politics

Since I'm majoring in Criminal Justice, I feel I should share my opinion on the topic.

In most cases: no, I do not support the death penalty. There's an issue with executing people who have been wrongfully convicted, and as the DNA and trace evidence improves, it turns out some of them didn't commit the crime. Unfortunately, some "convicted criminals" have already been executed despite the fact, which adds controversy to our current Criminal Justice System. Many people would also argue that the death penalty can be implied as a direct violation of the Eighth Amendment (which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment).

A professor that lectured one of my Criminal Justice classes provided a theory of certain crimes becoming punishable by the death penalty. I can't remember if he did the research, if he got data from another source, or if its just something he pondered about, but it should be worth thinking about. It certainly did for me. What if rape, sexual assault to a minor, and anything similar became a guaranteed death sentence? Many people at first would think, especially the feminist group, that it would be the best thing in the world! No one would want to rape anyone now that they might risk getting killed in the electric chair!

But hold on, you can still get the death penalty for murder. And sadly, no matter how strict the punishments are, there will still be people committing said crimes one way or another. Theoretically speaking, if the rapist were to rape a woman knowing these new penalties, then he have no reason NOT to kill her too. Logically if the rapist doesn't want to get caught, then one must hide the evidence, and witnesses (which the woman he raped would definitely be the biggest witness). At this point the rapist has nothing to lose, so to increase his chances to not get caught, he must also kill her, and hide her body and destroy any evidence he may have left behind.

However, this is not saying that all rapists won't kill their victims if the punishment for rape wasn't the death penalty. The sad reality is that many women who got raped are also killed. But for those who haven't been killed, it is possible to assume that the rapists knows that if they were to take it one step further by killing her, they're doomed for the death sentence if they get caught. So instead, they blackmail the victim to not report the crime, and flee knowing that if they get caught, at least they won't get executed if convicted.

So basically, if the government were to add death penalties to other horrible crimes like rape, then the odds of the victims getting killed as well will theoretically increase. In other words, it could make the situation worse.

Response to: Christianity. Posted April 14th, 2013 in General

It is rather difficult to call myself a Christian. I say this because everyone who claims to be a Christian (or any other branch of Christianity like Chaotic, Baptist, Methodist, etc.) tends to vary on opinions regarding what should be done in society. For instance (which I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet), we have the KKK. Very devoted Christians, yet they are very racist to anyone who is not "white", and are not tolerant to anyone who does not hold their Christian values. History has also shown them to be violent by lynching anyone who wasn't "white" for their political gain, which contradicts one of the Ten Commandments "Thou shall not murder/kill".

I would bring up the Westboro Baptist Church, but it has already been mentioned in detail.

There's a funny story I had regarding Christianity one day. Almost a year ago, I was moving furniture and boxes into my first apartment. I was really excited to finally be on my own without my parents or RAs watching my back. My roommate was still at his mom's house, so I was on my own for the first couple of days.

About a half an hour later, two men who were in their thirties noticed I was unloading stuff to my apartment alone. So they decided to approach me and ask if I needed any help. I told them that I'm in no need of help, and I wanted to do this on my own. The two men assisted that they wanted to "work", but that part went through my head thinking they meant "help". After thinking about it I decided to let them help by saying, "Well if you guys really want to".

For the first ten minutes it went smoothly, but then I overheard them talking about money. It occurred to me that they wanted to work for money and I had no cash on me, so I told them to stop what they were doing right quick. I explained that I had no money on me, and if you guys like to stop then go right ahead. One of the men was furious! He started to yell at me, probably thinking I was really dense or something, and I tried to explain it was a misunderstanding. This went on for a minute then he asked me if I would help move furniture for someone for free. I told him, "If they ask for help, yes I would." It was then I got the most interesting response. "So you're some sort of Christian? Because I'm not religious!"

We eventually negotiated and the two men left, thankfully the other guy was very understanding. Now, I brought this story up because he believes that when people help others, that makes them Christian. I disagree with his response. I help people out because I believe (I would say "know" but that might come out arrogant) it is the right thing to do. Christianity has nothing to do with my willingness to help others, and I've volunteered to a handful of organizations from charities to animal shelters. I can understand how some people who helped others get the idea from Christianity or the Bible, but this is something I learned on my own and from the community around me.

And regarding if I go to church, it's rare that I do. I have no disrespect for churches at all, but it's just something I don't go to on a regular basis. I've read bits and pieces of the Bible, but not the whole thing.

The reason why I find it hard to call myself a Christian is because I shaped my own character based on my surroundings. I also have some different viewpoints (I support gay-marriage, Christianity doesn't for example). For me, and this goes for any religion, Christianity is like a guide that someone could use if they are in doubt about the meaning of life. In most cases they will help them become good people, but sometimes it can be abused if they take everything seriously, or misunderstood a passage (like Al Quada, the WBC, and not forgetting the KKK). Personally, I believe that you don't necessarily need religion to be a good person as the community, education in general, and yourself can make that happen.

If you refuse to believe that widespread police corruption in cities isn't real, you're entitled to that belief, but the sad truth is greed and hatred is a part of our human nature.

I want to clarify something; I didn't say that police corruption isn't real. I know cases where corruption did happen.

Now that we got that out of the way, how can you be so sure that his actions are caused by NYPD influence or policies? That one source you pointed out didn't state why NYPD is corrupted other than the officer's quotes.

Also, greed and hatred can come from outside sources not associated with NYPD, or from any police department for that matter. He could have been raised by abusive parents, been bullied frequently in school, and the list goes on.

I just linked one article about NYC, I could easily find more.

Please do, as one incident will not convince me otherwise.

Chicago, NYC, and LA are all notorious for corruption, just ask anyone who's dealt with cops in one of these cities. Even if you could deny NYPD was corrupt, you can't deny CPD and LAPD are completely corrupt.

I haven't looked much into Chicago, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Regarding LAPD however, Los Angeles can be a very violent city. The police there are probably much more strict compared to other police departments due to this. Unfortunately, some people who are law abiding citizens will not sit well with their procedures and will think negatively of them.

Does LAPD have a history of corruption? Absolutely. But with recent changes after the LA Riots of 1992, they are at least trying to head in the right direction.

Nothing will be done because the police cover their own asses. Police brutality is punished with a slap on the wrist. I'm not saying all police are corrupt, but the force in these cities specifically is undeniably corrupt.

We can agree that not all police are corrupt. However, crooked cops more than likely got away with only a slap on the wrist is due to lack of physical evidence, or an awful jury.

It sounds more like Officer Kacamakovic is the corrupted one.

Kacamakovic, you may recall, was accused by the FBI of a lot of questionable activity, including pepper-spraying two patrons outside his cousin's bar in 2008 while screaming, "No one f***s with my cousinâEUTMs place!" He was in uniform and on duty at the time. After one of the patrons pressed charges, Kacamakovic allegedly used the NYPDâEUTMs computer system to search a federal database about the assault victim.

One officer does not make the whole police department corrupt. It's like saying a whole classroom is full of cheaters because one student cheated on a test.
