Fat chance anyone will sign up without any physical reward. (Money)
I'm Not trying to be harsh

Well like I said, I will make the website and code it (i know PHP, C#, C++, visual basic, etc), I can code the games. I just am a terrible artist and for the games to be engaging they need to be aesthetically pleasing. The reward could be monetary later on, but at first I want to do research and if possible submit to a scientific journal. I could even randomly select 100 users to get a free 1 month account for research and charge the rest. Being part of something that could generate valuable empirical data could be more beneficial than whatever small change you can pick up making any ol' website or flash game. I'm certainly not in it for monetary gain, I can make more money just picking up freelance programming work. Someone out there must have some extra free time, the skills, and the desire to do something potentially very fulfilling.

I want to create a web based program similar to Lumosity.com which is a site used to train the brain to improve memory, attention, executive processes, and processing speed. The brain responds to novelty and challenge by adaptation and physically restructuring itself, this is called neuroplasticity. Lumosity is banking off the phenonemon of neurplasticity. There are many other such brain exercising sites but Lumosity in my humble opinion is the best. The problem is that research on how effective such online brain exercising programs is slow and under-funded, and I really think that if everyone in the world did this (a full workout takes only 10 mins) we would have a more rational world.

Now that you understand the premise, my ambition is to create a similar brain training program but for it to be FREE (revenue could be earned by ads). This way I could perform large-scale research by forcing all members to take an IQ test before and after, say 30 days, of training. I could do this using Lumosity but then I would have to pay for memberships for all the volunteers and Lumosity isn't gonna do it itself because then itll lose a lot of money.

So I need a flash actionscript programmer and designer to make the flash based games (perhaps 6 to 10, relatively simple games, again, check out Lumosity.com for inspiration) and I will create the website and everything else and conduct the research. If all I can get is a designer (artist) then I could if all else fails do the coding myself ( but i absolutely cannot do art). This is not a paid job, this is a collaborative project.

-reply, message, or somehow contact me if interested in perhaps making the world a bit more intelligent

I think neuroplasticity plays a huge role in this. The brain actually can turn on and off genes. Perhaps its just the wrong gene being 'turned on', due to being predisposed genetically or by environmental factors that trigger the 'turn on' of the gene. Either way it could be 'fixed' through pyschoanalysis.
The brain nicely adapts to its stimulii. For example a study showed that when people were brain-scanned, and blind-folded for a few days, and brain-scanned again, the visual cortex (because it did not receive any visual information) was taken over by the auditory cortex. And thats just in a few days!
I've heard so many anecdotal stories of how supposedly people now gay turned gay, usually it involves some sort of molestation at a young age or man pornography at a young age. And how coincidental that at around 8 and below is when the brain is most susceptible to change (most malleable if you will...)

Just a thought....

I don't know if this has been discussed already (I tried searching but didnt find anything) so I apologize if this is something old.

My question being, why is homosexuality accepted as normal when it is unnatural?

Natural selection says that only those most capable of producing healthy offspring are the 'fittest' and thus the most fit will keep their genes in the gene pool while those infertile or simply too unhealthy to produce offspring will die and their genes weeded out. Should sexual orientation be genetic, then shouldn't homosexuals be the arch-enemy of natural selection, and be completely eradicated by millions of years of evolution?

It seems in nature that the whole purpose of living is to produce offspring that will survive, and homosexuals are incapable of producing offspring naturally and thus their behavior is un-natural. Why then are people being pushed to accept it as normal? Perhaps a clever way of keeping world population undercontrol... Anywho, what do you have to retort?

I don't think it's particularly a problem whether you bring a child up atheistic or theist or whatever. As long as you give the child a good education and teach him/her to have an open-mind and come to conclusions on their own...they should, if you have a child with even a modest intellectual capacity, be able to come up with their own beliefs, perhaps contrary to how they were raised, when they become young adults.

I liked this segment of the conversation:

MR. RUSSERT: You would vote against the Civil Rights Act if, if it was today?

REP. PAUL: If it were written the same way, where the federal government's taken over property--has nothing to do with race relations. It just happens, Tim, that I get more support from black people today than any other Republican candidate, according to some statistics. And I have a great appeal to people who care about personal liberties and to those individuals who would like to get us out of wars. So it has nothing to do with racism, it has to do with the Constitution and private property rights.

MR. RUSSERT: I was intrigued by your comments about Abe Lincoln. "According to Paul, Abe Lincoln should never have gone to war; there were better ways of getting rid of slavery."

REP. PAUL: Absolutely. Six hundred thousand Americans died in a senseless civil war. No, he shouldn't have gone, gone to war. He did this just to enhance and get rid of the original intent of the republic. I mean, it was the--that iron, iron fist..

MR. RUSSERT: We'd still have slavery.

REP. PAUL: Oh, come on, Tim. Slavery was phased out in every other country of the world. And the way I'm advising that it should have been done is do like the British empire did. You, you buy the slaves and release them. How much would that cost compared to killing 600,000 Americans and where it lingered for 100 years? I mean, the hatred and all that existed. So every other major country in the world got rid of slavery without a civil war. I mean, that doesn't sound too radical to me. That sounds like a pretty reasonable approach.

What did you like about that segment?

I think Paul is right. I mean I have always thought the civil war was the best thing that ever happened to this country, but now that I think about it, how did all the other countries in the world get rid of slavery without a civil war an immense loss of human life...? Paul's argument makes a lot of sense despite our upbringing which has given us the impression that without having a civil war we wouldn't have freed the slaves. There's almost always more than one way to do something, and oft times, one way is better than the other.

What should be done about overpopulation?
- Should the government exterminate people?
- Should we limit the number of children women can conceive?
- Should we build mega-metropolis cities to compact the populous into compact areas and thus consoldiating human disturbance to nature?
- oher...

I for one am rather indifferent about the whole 'the planet's gonna die' movement. I think if the government would stop subsidizing and pursing oil-interests and let alternative fuel companies compete, then this wouldn't be such a problem. I have no problem driving an electric car, in fact, i'd love to.

I do however agree with people that claim the world is overpopulated, but I don't think anyone has the authority to say who gets exterminated... I think the best idea would be to increase spending on space exploration so that we can build colonies on other planets/moons and spread out instead of just staying on this earth. That would solve the problem without killing anyone.

What do you think?

OR can you search a table with an array, that would give me the same effect...
Example:
<?php

$sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM table WHERE field LIKE '$array_a'");
// How do I see if it finds any of the words in the array or something....

Topic: Mysql Select Most Similar

Posted: 07/23/06 10:27 PM

Forum: Programming

Is there an sql function to SELECT any rows in a table most similar to a field... like instead of SELECT * FROM table WHERE field LIKE '%$string%' which finds a row with keyword $string, so if $string is "hi my name is" but there isnt a row like but there is a row "hello my name is" it would pull that row because its most similar.

PHP example:
<?php
$string = trim(strip_tags(addslashes($_POST['usermsg
'])));
$sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM table WHERE field = '%$string%");
// This finds me a row where field "field" has the $string in it exactly somewhere
?>
How can I make it so that if it's not exact it pulls out the row with the field "field" most similar to $string?

Your great wisdom and intelligence on the matter to assist me is appreciated greatly.

Wait will this find all instances of text in between the delimiter?
Example: "This is a nice day #this is a bad day# to be riding your bike. Even though #it's getting dark# I know it's getting late."
I want to find both of those. What I'm basically trying to do is delete any text in between the two chars I want. So in my string, any text in between the char I want will be deleted. All instances. It will have multiple places of "#texthere# blah blah #text here#"
Thanks again.

Topic: Finding text with 2 chars (PHP)

Posted: 07/20/06 02:07 PM

Forum: Programming

I'd like to find the text in between to find characters in a string.

Example:

$string = "What a nice day this is #its a bad day# to be riding your bicycle!";

I want to withdraw the text inbetween the "#" chars. So it would give me "its a bad day"
or "#its a bad day#"

The text inbetween these chars is unknown in my script so I can't just do strstr(); or something. And if there is no such function, maybe someone could make it?

Thanks in advance.
