To become an atheist you must first be an egomanic, you must then develop an anti-authority complex at an early age to justify your hatred of anything that can, might, or is believed to have more power over your life than you do.
You must read a few books written by people who misinterpret and take science out of context in order to further their anti-religion agenda. THEN, you have to misinterpret the teachings of religion as use the faults of humans to fabricate the faults of a religion.
For instance, to be an effective atheist you have to do the typical, shallow claim of: "All religion is wrong and God doesn't exist because the book fo Genesis says things that science has disproved" THEN you ignore the countless intricacies and background information about the context in which the Bible was written.
You try to disprove God based on the faults of people who believe in God, you don't actually go to the root of issue of the existence of God itself, because any academic scholar knows that the existence of God cannot be either disproved or proved by human beings because our understanding of the universe is so small that we ourselves might not even exist. So to be an atheist you tend to take a few isolated aspects of science to attack religion, but then when the full spectrum of science comes in to play, you devolve into personal attacks on the particular people who believe in the religion you are attacking at that time.
-- iv done none of that, yet I'm still an atheist, actually to be more precise I'm more of an apatheist when it comes to religion, i have a live and let live attitude towards it, and what you have said is, on a large scale, untrue
So basically, in order to be an atheist, you have to be a douchebag.
