Also there is a stargate movie that was released in 1994 which turned into the franchise. AND there is an episode of sg1 which is basically what you said but and the merlin name you specified was in that episode too.

Well all i can think of is that it is either Avatar: the last air bender, Stargate: SG1 or Stargate Atlantis.
