My aim is to make a basic platformer game, but obviously flash doesn't like me. Any ideas?
You're going to have to be a bit more specific. What is it you're having trouble with? Some code for us to see would probably help. :P

Using two = is common practice in a various programming and scripting languages. It'd be more confusing using the same symbol for two different functions.
Plus, it would make AS run a bit slower, because every time you called the '=' operator, it would have to perform a test to see whether or not it's setting a value, or testing for equality, which I don't even think would be possible anyway. :)

1.) Flash forum.
2.) Don't come back into the Regs lounge, please. :)
'Sup guys? I'm refreshing myself on AS2, because I really want to start making some Flash games, and apparently, I don't understand what I'm doing well enough yet, because I'm flabbergasted. Anyway, I have my current code:
and it doesn't work. First of all, I know I should get on to AS3, and I will, but I'd like to see this working in AS2 first, before I start to confuse myself.
Anyway, here's my current issue.
I have a player MovieClip on the stage. I also have a ground MovieClip on the stage. The ground is essentially two rectangles, one above the other, and connected by a slant. Here comes issue one. The hitTesting on the box works fine, I think, but if I try a shapeflag, it doesn't work.
Problem two. When the player stops on the ground MC, he stops, and that's great, but his dy is still like, 2x, which means, as soon as the player steps off the block, he begins falling at what speed he landed with onto the block. If I set his dy to 0, gravity essentially doesn't work, because I set falling and jumping to false.
This is completely killing me, and I've gotten so lost, that I have no clue how to fix it. If I could get some help, I would love you guys.
Ignore the red thing; it's to become a spring later.
Are you talking about a VCam?

3) That was your first post, and a boring one.
Who cares?

I liked the videos, but I would definitely recommend what Dearon posted. I need to check that place out myself. :P
Plus, they're two different people.
Martin Luther, and Martin Luther King Jr.
I don't understand why people get them mixed up. :(
Please tell me you guys have played this game:

Except you have no idea about the concepts of programming. Go learn to speak English properly first, then maybe look up some beginner programming, but you're not going to be able to jump from beginner to MMORPG. You can only learn from experience if you already have pre-gained knowledge about what you're experiencing.

Good point. Yea, it's probably best you just don't post stuff like this.

Go spam advertise in general. This type of thing, I don't believe is really allowed here.

I don't think I will ever get tired of reading that. I can't stop laughing. Thank you sir, for a fantastic laugh. I haven't heard anyone pull out the "My Dad works at Microsoft" bull in a long time. :)

Didn't need to be a smartass though, not everyone knows there exists a method named "substring".
1.) He wasn't being a smarta$$. (I don't cuss.)
2.) A simple 5 minutes of searching google, and you could have found the answer yourself.
3.) Anyone who programs in a language that supports strings should be familiar with a substring.
choose your plan. and thank you for shopping VG-MP, mocking greasy nerds like yhar sense 1978 :)
This so-called "Mocking" nerds, is really "Proving you're better" and in doing so, you would be considered more of a nerd than yhar. Good job there, I think you deserve a cookie.
Flash Forum, my friend. :)
PHP is pretty much useless for anything besides dynamic web content though.
If the developers would make up their freaking minds, maybe it could be a decent language.
And again whats with the arguing? Totaly no need for it, you keep think people arnt reading your posts or are twisting your words! All anybody has done is try to explain their point of view, and you take it badly.
I like what Jon said. Very well-put. :)

Yea you too then...
I'm only 15. Like Jon said, we're not against you. However, when you waste our time with something that could have been found on your own in a matter of a few minutes searching, we have reason to get angry with your impatience. Like I said before, we're not here to teach every human being on this earth what they want to know.
I think we're here to answer questions on topics that could be sort of vague, or topics that might require some experience, but that's my opinion.
Yes NG is quite useless at times. They all like to take what I post, mutate it, then throw it back in my face.
But lets not start that again...
We're not the ones who are useless. Some of us have more important things to do, than teach every human being how to program, especially when there's resources out there, like Google. I've used Google since I was 10, and I've learned all kinds of crap on my own.
If you're the one who's too lazy to look up information yourself, how are you ever going to learn anything, when you're spoon-fed the entire way? Also, if you're the one who's too lazy to look stuff up, that's your fault, and we shouldn't have to do crap like that for you.
Come on now. Google can, and will practically find anything you want now. You shouldn't need us for EVERYTHING.
Yeah, it's a clone. A clone with many additions that set it apart from it's original piece. Not to mention it's free. Like I said, if you want to just go play WoW, then go for it. But the game has it's perks.
Ha, yea, it looks interesting, to be perfectly honest. It kind of came out wrong, because what I meant was:
"Wow, the first thing I think of is WoW's website. :P"
I might check it out if I have some free time, but I doubt I will. :P
At 3/9/09 06:54 PM, desert116 wrote: And after all that text, you didn't even provide a link.
Talk about clone...
A word of warning though: C++ will be very hard to lean. From the way you sound, you dont have much (if any) experience with programming other than HTML; So this will be a real challenge.
1.) Don't ever assume anything. Just because someone sounds odd on the internet doesn't necesarily mean anything. English may not be his first language.
2.) Dev-C++ is outdated, and not necessarily a good option. I would personally recommend Code::Blocks myself.
Fuck off, Jessii is much more appreciated here then you will ever be.
I second this statement. Jessii's awesome.
Another issue with this kind of thing, is that stuff like a .exe do not run in a browser. You have to download it and run it locally, and Newgrounds can't personally check each .exe for viruses.
Now, if there was a systematical way to do that automatically, then it might be possible, however, until then, things like flash, which exports by default to .swf, which can run in a browser without any outside program involvement, will continue to be used.
It's called Flash. Read my sig:
Please quit telling people to read your crappy sig. It sucks.
If you want to submit something to Newgrounds, you're going to need:
At that link, you can find the free 30 day trial, which would be a great start, and I'm sure you can use Google for some great tutorials.
You can also use Google for Game Maker tutorials, but be aware, that something you create with Game Maker cannot be submitted to Newgrounds. I'm sure you're aware, but just to reiterate that.
