Well you're right there, PT Anderson was considering not making it at all if he didn't accept the lead role.
Anyway I watched The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967) about a week ago.
Was about an uptight college graduate who is seduced by his fathers' buisness partners wife, only to fall in love with their daughter. Although I could definately see why this is rated so highly in critics minds I found it didn't hold my attention very well, and the soundtrack was very repetative something I find quite intolerable in films. I did think the performances were something to applaud however, and Anne Bancroft's volatile demeanor made the role very memorable indeed.
