Things really do seem to move fast in this thread... which is very strange.

But unfontunatly, I am not able to find the time to keep up to date with it. So, whilst I will still be around the forum on occasions, I regreat to say I will be rarly seen from now on.

May be, in time to come, I will be able to catach up with you guys. It will nice to come back here once I have done the uni thing, which takes up alot of time, and see how all you guys are.

you need to finish of the design of this site mate.

the posts on this front page are not formated in any real way, which cheapens the look.

nearly all of the font appears to jsut be defualt text, and what text that has been styled is just using NG's font.

overal it looks good, just needs to be finished of me thinks.

Dam this new found student life!

It takes all of my money and time and forces me to drink!

oh, who am i kidding, drinking is worth it. Though I have spent way to much money in the last three weeks. I have to get a job real soon, as well as a few other random tasks.

Alredy got courseworks to do, which is not fun! and lots of reading, which is actaully fairly intresting.

Im fairly sure that http and ftp have more or less the same speed, as far as protocol goes.

I dont think it realy matters which you use. though, if you are wanting to transfer files, makes sense to use ftp

if these guys aint codeing their system... then dont really have any need or right to say what language is going to be used.

from what i can make of these languages, image you are wanting to hit a nail in, pearl would be doing it with stone. you can use a stone to hit in a nail, but what you want to be useing, is a hammer. which php would be.

But dont forget, a stone can still hit a nail in.

if that? crist... why is programming so male orientated... almost to the point of being a gay thing to do. On my course, computer game tech, their was only one girl, who it turns out wasnt even ment to be their. I tihnk their are only a handfull of girls doing any sort of computing course.

If anythink, all the forward planning that is need for larger projects, surley that would mean girls would be more suitable for it then boys.

oh well...

Crist... this thread will soon have more posts then the entire programming forum put together. Seriusly, 7000 posts, that is something!

The more impresive thing is that this thread is still on track.

And i start uni on saturday.... that is going to awsome. I have soo much to pack up... but i dont want to spend the reast of this week bored out of my mind... and i dont want to have to read 20 pages of reg lounge...

I just wish I had more money saved up... got like £200... looks like I will be working all the time!

Right now, their are few things that REALLY need to be changed in this forum.

To start with, we really need to have an edit button. I know this has been said a lot, and the main reason against it is that people will change a post realy badly after others have posted. The edit button needs to be availble to be used to change your post so long as no one else has posted and it is within 5 minutes of you posting.

Secondly, the search feture needs to be moved to the top of the forum and made more obvius. It also needs to be a bit more refined. If i want to search for something about C++, then I know my best chances are going to in this forum, not the entire BBS.

Admins need to be able to either move threads or just full on delete them. Maybe have the ability to flag them for deleation, and hwne the fall of the first page they are removed from the forum altogether. At least this way, the people who made the thread will be able to see that thei thred has been locked and will soon be deleated. It will also help reduce the amount of space taken up by the BBS, something that i think the gods of NG seem to worry about.

Lastly, I think that, at least in this forum, when some one makes a new thread, it should be scanned for flash related stuff. if it is found to have a fair bit about flash and action script then a big fat warning should come up saying that chnaces are, this thread should be moved to the flash forum. then have a few more warnings saying how gay they are if they still post this thread and it is indeed about flash stuff.

Well, those are my two cents. I feel a bit better now i have said my bit.

Topic: AI:brains of a program

Posted: 09/05/07 02:02 PM

Forum: Programming

you seem to hung up on this idea that AI has to want something.

In my example, the creature did not think... hm im hungry, how can i solve this. it was jsut told that when its energy level is so low, move towards the food.

If you are wanting to get VERY smart, you will program your AI so that their is one ultimate purpose for it, which may very well be to have 'pleasure'. if you where going to take this aproach, you would be building a nerual netowrk. In order to reach tis goal of pleasure, which may well come from not behing hungry, your nerual network will (or mroe should) quick priatise eating food. it will their for start to change its behaviour so that it gets food. However, with such a simple model, you will probably find that all your creatur will do is stay still untill it sees food, slowly move to get it (as moving fast would reduce its food levels, thus reduce it plesur) and then eat it.

but, as you start to make it more intricate, your nerual netwrok may be aloud to find pleasure in hunting for food, thus it will activly look for food, rather then wait for it to come to you.

Yer... the hole challeng idea was realy good

but then every one ecided to psot a challange... and their are hardly any solutions out their.

Making a main for this would be ok... except you are making a main for something that given a month for the frenzy to go away, their will be nothing left of it.

Their jsut isnt the demand for such topics. If the three people this year ask something, better to jsut explain it in that thread.

I also think we should campaign for a overhall of the search function!

Topic: AI:brains of a program

Posted: 09/05/07 09:29 AM

Forum: Programming

I made a very crude sort of AI in a flash thing once.

It basicly had a very basic little blob, that moved at random within a certain area. All it did was move at random and use up enerjy. If you wanted to, you could feed it food. This would randoly place a bit of food.

This will then act as a way point for the creature, it would move towards it if it was hungry enough to do so. Simply, if the enrgy was below a certain level, then if it sees the food it will move towards in a fairly straight line.

As simple as that may be, that is AI. It counts as AI, because it finds its own way to the food for it self. Yes i know that I programmed it to work out how much to turn and how fast to move... but that is all AI is.

I may go back to this at some stage and realy expand on it...

I see what people mean. sure it would nice to keep all tutorails on thing collected together. But yer, people genrally do not ask about thing like this.

Though I still think that if their was a need for this thread, this is the place.

The underlying problem though is that people do not use the search feture. if they did, then they would easerly find their way to the info that they need.

I think that as a hole, the programming forum could do with opening up to the idea of more genrall computing help. If we start to make a name for our selves as a place where you can get info aout non programming computer problems, then we would get a bit more trafic. and threads like this would be of some use.

Untill we do start to get a good amou nt of people asking about these sort of things... I think this thread can be left to rest.

genrally people are twats in the other forums.

the reason that forum is such a nice place to be is that we are fairly strict with stuff.
Their is a specific flash forum, that clearly states that anything flash is to go in their, so it REALLY gets anoying when people ask about flash stuff in here, then get all arogent cose we said it should be in the flash forum

I think that this could be realy good.

maybe it would be more use full if it is was something more genric. so maybe OS: Main it can then be broken down into catagories such as windows mac linux. their could be handy guides for things. I would write a guide on a few simple registory hacks that I have set up on my own machine.

some one could write a guid explaining all the terminology for people new to this.

overall, i think this would be realy good to have.
