It might be worth converting it to a WAV and then back to MP3 again. If your program exports it into an MP3 format that Flash will accept, then no harm done right?

Make it about Hitler's bunker. I guarantee that if the graphics and sound match up to Last Stand, then a Hitler's Last Stand will soar.

You know how to move objects around in the main timeline already, right? Namely by tweening?

Just do that inside a movie clip, which loops automatically. Make sure the object you create (pressing F8 works fine) is a Movie Clip and not a Graphic. You won't see it in the timeline, you'll have to export to test, but the movie clip will loop once you drag it into a layer. Remember, you won't see it in the timeline!

I want to say "get a Wacom Intuos", but I benefitted from learning with training wheels first. By that, I mean I used a Wacom Graphire 4x6 until I was used to the feel of the thing. After wielding the pen started to come naturally, I switched to the Intuos. Yes, the cost is worth it (an 8x10 is like $300 new or some such); it's smoother, the lines are clearer because of the levels of sensitivity, the surface has the friction of real paper, and it generally gives a much better experience.

So it's up to you. I would say try the Wacom Graphire out for a year, and then switch to Wacom Intuos when you're used to it. If you're already a tablet person and have the budget to back it, go right for the Intuos. Trust Swain. He knows.

NOTE: If you don't live in North America, then the Wacom product you buy will come by a different name and look but will be essentially the same technology.

Is it possible that Newgrounds gets overlooked because the media doesn't know that it hosts original content by artists who seek it out, and that it's not another Ebaumsworld.com content-hoarding thief site?

If there's anything Newgrounds needs to make public, it's probably that. The Portal is what sets it apart.

This is true, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that a lot of his stress comes from seeing how many dreams he is making into reality for so many other people, and yet this pursuit is keeping him from many of his own. Twelve years of putting everyone before himself is a very long time, even for a selfless person.

I know it's not exactly inspiring to say that even Hitler had a posse, but let's face it - one person can never singlehandedly make a difference, but the people who believe in them, as a whole, can. Just by doing what you're doing, Tom, you've inspired thousands of artists and programmers to create Flash cartoons and games on behalf of Newgrounds and ask for little to nothing in return. This may not be everything you've dreamed it would be, but you've brought together some of the best parts and people on the internet, right here on Newgrounds. Sure, we're not really helping you to hasten the redesign or to make the NG office larger, but what does it matter? We're still here, and you're the reason why. I think this community is a perfect example of why dreaming big and acting small really isn't that bad.

You're piloting a very impressive flagship, and it's safe to say that without you, some corporate lowlife would have already found this net niche and sucked the soul right out of it. It's remarkable how you've kept this place alive just by running it like a human being, along with a little help from some people who feel the same way. Newgrounds isn't Myspace/Youtube big simply because you haven't sold out, and if that's the cost of growing larger, then it just isn't worth it. Seriously.

I think a 12th Anniversary reflection will help remind you of what you've already accomplished, and to not worry so much about what comes next.

Response to: Blockhead Episode 9 Stolen! Posted June 7th, 2007 in General

On the bright side, I guess it's free publicity. I don't have any ads on my site that pay me for visits, and Newgrounds benefits from having its link advertised on the sites who have taken the swf. There's a benefit to that i suppose.

However, it's very low that sites take the cartoon without asking, especially because I'd give permission to anyone who asked if I knew they weren't gonna corrupt anything about it. But the Blockhead game was stolen hardcore by many sites, so this isn't as bad I think. But it's still bad.

Ah well, that's why Newgrounds continues to be the best democracy for free content on the net, imho.

The Zelda thing had good graphics and was mildly funny, but if it were anything besides Zelda it probably only have 4.10. No where near the ridiculous 4.50.

4.10 would still be really good. I thought it was well drawn and pretty funny, and the timing was worthwhile. My only qualm was the length, along with how Link jumped around against all logic of perspective when the camera moved, just so that (I suspect) the author didn't have to redraw him at logical angles and could instead recycle artwork.

GUM was nice for a short film, and it had some real animation, so that's a plus. Blockhead ep. 9 is not only a longer film with more jokes and fun, but it runs smoother and has even more animation... so they don't need to die.

I'll admit the latest Blockhead wasn't quite as phenomenal as the other episodes, but in comparison to Newgrounds movies in general, it's incredible! Definitely deserving of a Daily (and perhaps a Weekly) First.

On top of everything else, my cartoon and rtil's weren't even submitted on the same day, and were thus not even competing for Daily First. If Wiz said that rtil didn't deserve 1st, he meant vs other submissions that day, and not against mine. :)

But this counts as telling someone. That's a step further from doing nothing at all. Not that it helps the old guy any, har har.

That old guy looked pitiful. There was actually a hobo sitting on the floor right by him, and he didn't seem bothered in the slightest. But you can't leave it to a hobo to call the police, because hobos have no rights.

Saw a guy get beat up. Posted June 4th, 2007 in General

It's weird, at first you think that it's just someone playing, and then it turns out that the guy wearing all camo at the bus stop is actually punching this older guy in the face until he's down on the ground, crying.

When stuff like that happens, I always feel like I should have done something about it. I couldn't have intervened (I was waiting in a turn lane in my car) and I was too far to take a picture or video, but it blows that I'm the only one who sees it happen and I can't even do anything.

Should I have called the cops or something? The dude was walking away almost as soon as it happened, so I don't know that it would have helped.

Also, take careful note that I said there has been NO talk of Time Tank, not even "OMG I LUV BLOKCHAED AND I VOETD ALL MY 5 R BELONG @ THIS LAWLZERZ". Except, you know, for the sarcasm above. And my own post. It don't count.

Response to: Best of April and Marrying April Posted May 13th, 2007 in NG News

I'm seriously confused as to how me and Julian's "Time Tank" won a monthly prize.

Don't think we're ungrateful, as we hoped to at least place somewhere in the top 20 because of all the work we put into it...but we were also the ONLY Pico submission to make top 5 (since Roulette was bumped off for being 'official'). How did that happen? I mean, the Pico Day winner, Flashback 00, didn't even place anywhere. What's going on here?

The reason I'm weirded out is because NO ONE talks about Time Tank. A lot of deserving Pico 'toons had a lot of discussion based around them, such as Unleashed and The Herpes Escape. And yet Time Tank went the route of being totally unremarkable, yet it keeps winning all these prizes. How is a cartoon that no one cares to talk about (except MadCow previously in this topic, only to call it "ok") pulling so much weight?

Please, if there is a pro-Swain conspiracy out there that I don't know about, then someone enlighten me. :( Because I have run out of possible answers.

:Also, I would have been happier if Lizard Vortex had gotten a top 5 slot. What a deserving animation!

I used to (and sometimes still do) draw like garbage. In my opinion, the best bet is to learn realism first and then move backwards from there. A simple, effective style comes not from how to avoid drawing things realistically, but from learning how to portray realistic details in the simplest way possible.

Nooooooooo, no more front page icons! I'm not one of those Front Page Puritans who feels that more submissions on the front reduces the integrity of those that actually made it there, so much as it's a bit overwhelming with viewers already needing to use the scroll bar to see what's up there even now.

Defeats the purpose of the Front Page being a sort of...highlight/synopsis of what's new on NG.

Second place split down the middle between Julian and I, and that's STILL a hefty sum of money :O Looks like I don't need to find a job for another month, freeing me up for more full-time animation (and, if I hurry up, another Blockhead)! Thank you very much Tom, you've really succeeded at sharing the Newgrounds dream with others. I'm happy for Julian and I, I'm happy for the other winners, and I'm happy that you're probably happy that we're happy :D

And double thanks to you guys who supported our toon, or left comments with genuine suggestions on how to improve for next year. Tom is the reason why there are contests like this one, but you guys are the reason why the submissions reach such a level of quality.

(I also would have been happier if Tim had gotten 1st place :D I've watched his submission ten times and I'm still not done with it)
