There, I contributed to the survey.

I hope the $136163163161 I make every month on Flash games doesn't ruin the average.

Also, Goldfish is gonna write our anthem. But I don't know what that leaves me.

Its Michael Swain and 2 NG staff..... WOW Whats the point of even entering?

I think the idea behind the contest is to get as MANY teams participating as possible, because the $$$ we all stand to make will be because of the popularity of the contest generating advert revenue for all of us, not a hierarchical order of winners getting cash and the others wasting their time.

That's why I'm hoping Adam Phillips joins up: rather than kicking my ass in the art department and taking away potential earning from me, his name will actually make the contest more popular and thus potentially get more people playing MY game :D

Or maybe I'm completely wrong - someone correct me if so. I don't wanna mislead anyone.

We've decided to handicap ourselves on this one just to make sure everyone has a fair chance, so Jim has to compose his music like Stevie Wonder (completely blinded), I'm not allowed to use the Ctrl Z buttons to undo any of my many mistakes, and Goldfish has to code the game completely sober.

Response to: Best way of animating characters? Posted January 23rd, 2009 in Game Development

I find the fastest way to do it is to change the rotation points on a series of symbols representing each movable part of the body, as stated by others in the thread. But I've had a lot of success doing platformer art this way. Once you've done this for each part of the body, you never have to change the rotation point again for any animation involving the same character/parts.

He did, but like you said, it was one single car (impressive as it was). Our host here is apparently avidly at work on multiple designs from many series, and I don't have a copy of this game but am avidly anticipating what other designs he or anyone else wanna contribute!

Art style is just fine where it is, but yeah I'd reinterpret the direction of the patch. One strap goes down and under, and the other goes up and over the opposite the first strap. Otherwise, it drops off. BELIEVE ME I KNOW.

It's possible to re-record music on your computer and then save the new file as an MP3 so that it comes up as completely lossless transfer between files. That's how I convert my music that for some reason is in a strange format.

Response to: Triginometry Posted July 23rd, 2008 in Game Development

As stated by the previous poster, I also feel that not everything needs to be done in trig. Mostly because trig blows hard and for the casual programmer it's a nightmare.

Be creative and think outside the trigonometric box, as it were.

At 7/16/08 05:19 PM, Ansel wrote: Writer's Portal? What's this shit? I thought this was a Flash site. Tom, I recall reading some little snippet of text you wrote about the decision to keep the portal flash-only, as opposed to allowing the submission of video files as well. I respect that decision, and feel adding a Writer's Portal (along with the "Art Portal" I keep hearing about) would detract from the site's focus. Of course it'd bring the traffic rolling in, but it'd also probably expand the site too much.

Rucklo is correct (AS USUAL), the writer's portal will be there to serve Flash authors. Aside from being a starting point for Flash authors to collect ideas, it could also potentially be a planning ground for artists who are forced to collaborate with one another to manifest their script and work together, or even for artists like myself to post script concepts and have other members of the community review and criticize it before it is ever animated.

Let alone actionscripters who want to share code segments with other actionscripters, such as classes and functions to perform certain tasks to save other coders a bundle of time. Just pop on the writer's portal and do a search for "collision detection", and download the block of code best suited to your project.

Think outside the box. All you have to do is think of the writing that is involved in any good Flash piece, and a writer's portal won't sound so alien.

When I was a bit younger, let's say 3 years younger than I am now, I was fine with animating in my spare time and pumping out animation when I could. I had no quality standard then either, so making toons was much easier, too.

Now at 26 I feel like I'm young enough to keep going without making a career of it, but I still want to animate full-time. To do so I've had to secure a means of making at least enough cash to pay rent, buy groceries, and keep drinking as much beer as my youthful liver will allow me (as beer is where I get my power). I haven't really started saving money yet, because I feel like the experience I am gaining by using Flash as seriously as I am is a much more valuable investment than saving a few dollars. That and I don't really have much to save anyway.

In a couple of years I'll have to have made sure that this has become my career if I intend to continue doing it. I guess when that time comes I'll have to seriously consider my next move, but until then, I am completely for the system Tom has put together. It's true that he can't provide jobs for every animator who stumbles onto Newgrounds, but making it easier for them to continue practicing their craft...PRICELESS. THANKS TOMMMMMMMMM
