Lifers also can escape. Jailbreaks can give a murderer or rapist a second chance at freedom. Death is the only way to keep bad people like that off our streets.

How many lifers have escaped in the past ten years? Now how many death-row inmates in Illinois were found innocent just prior to being executed?

They weren't more destructive "in due time." The Great Purge ended before World War II began. The Russians were never exactly "nice" but they had significantly calmed down by the time we allied with them. As fun as it is to imagine, I don't think it will ever happen. Even though relaxed recruiting standards have let some radicals(neo-nazis, klansmen and such) into the military, I can't imagine even a fraction of the US military taking part in a coup against the President. Secondly, there's no way in hell that the tea-party crowd will ever revolt. If they don't want to pay more taxes, I can guarantee that they don't want to risk being imprisoned or dying in a war they can't possibly win.
