Start off with a basic layout of the character. Try connecting him in enough ways. Will his legs be joined as in the robots of Portal2, or would you prefer a way that the legs actually go IN the robot. Also how the eye is stuck in the robot is an important feat. Start off with basic sticks and circles to analyse this on basic level. Try making some concept sketches on what works best and work it out on the computer later on.

Before we can start critiquing shading or such, you need to fully realize the robot in detail first. Do you want to keep it a simplistic style or make it a bit 'edgier' and sophisticated?

You'll need to come up with a lot of better stuff to impress people.
For starters, try scanning a drawing you made by hand.

P-bot drawing

Try putting a lot of effort in backgrounds. I know it's kind of hypocritical coming from me, but even though they are a bitch to draw now and then, try getting all effects right. Start with the air and ground, basic composition, then add mountains, make sure perspectives are allright... This should take about the time you work on your characters in the drawing. Everything needs a defining shape. I can tell it's lava down there, but it's sloppily done and needs attention. Those lightning bolts should be about 1 pixel thick and glow. When working on the basic pose of the character, draw some basic ideas for the background as well, so it's not messing with composition.

A final bit of advice: You can shade a bit more drastically. Now it all looks pretty neutral and frankly, boring. You're improving quite a lot though, don't let my critique put you off :3
