But as for your drawing, I like it!

Only thing I find odd is that the ear on his left looks like it's not going down far enough (or it's too high).

Okay, thanks. I'll fix that up.

Still got a good ways to go, but I have begun! Muahahaha!

I have to fix the mouth, and obviously get the base down for the hair and goggles as well, then I'll really start making this look sexy. Any suggestions appreciated.

It's looking good so far. Make sure you get enough contrast though, it's looking a bit flat right now.

I actually find it kind of funny that you're doing a Dr. Horrible painting now. I was going to start one this week (I just got finished watching it recently, thus, new found inspiration). I'll post some pics up when I get going :)

Can't wait to see the final product.

From what you have so far, the colors look good. There's a nice contrast. The only thing I'd have to mention is the hair.

You have light sources from almost every direction I think. Try to focus where the highlights/lighting will fall on the hair if that were a real subject. For example, there probably will be little to no major highlighting in the back side of the hair (left side). Same with the bangs the further away from the light source it gets.

I'm kinda picky when it comes to hair though, so that could be part of it :3

According to my profile, I'm unscouted, but I don't totally understand why. I was scouted, by Luis, and (to my knowledge) I wouldn't consider my uploaded things qualified as something to revoke my scout. I never received a message or anything, I just kind of found out that I was not scouted any more.

I'd like to know if I did something wrong, who I should contact, or if this is just kind of a fluke in the system?

In the meantime, here's some new work requested by a friend

Quick question

I dunno if I'm going to be in this one or not. It was either 4 or 5 I participated in, and we went through a lot of work, yet the thread died (that was the game characters one I think. We did Spyro, that's all I remember).

Maybe. I'll give a definite answer later. Great topic though!

I think the bird part is best, the feathers look really good and the eyes too. The pose is good aswell. The bird part and lion part aren't coloured in the same style, the lion part is plain and the bird part with a lot of colour differences, I know it would be hard to paint lion fur but maybe it would be better.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I noticed that as well, but I'm not sure how to approach the lion painting. If anyone has any suggestions how to make it all flow better, I'm all ears.

The gloss finish made the eyes look amazing. It still needs about a day to fully cure, but it should have the same effect. The little feller is about 3 inches tall and about 2 inches wide both ways.

So I present to you, baby griffin. Any critique would be lovely.

Not the best quality pictures in the world... also not the best lighting, which hindered the picture quality...

Okay, so I used this really basic ProArt acrylic paint set to paint my baby griffon sculpture, but it's still kind of sticky even though it's been dry for about a week. I'm thinking that if I stick it in the toaster oven for a little bit it might harden it, but I'm not sure. What would you guys recommend, any ideas?

(btw, all that's left to do is take pictures. I used the gloss - which smells like rubber cement times twenty - and it turned out great; they look like real, glossy eyes)

I always chose the character called 'Gon', which is also an orange lizard. What was the clay you used? Did you bake it or is it clay that stays soft?
And I am interested in your current project, we can give some criticism.

I think I used Sculpey III, but that was formed from the remains of another project, so it may have been FIMO (but probably Sculpey). I had to bake it to harden it, I've never tried using air drying clays.

I once used Crayola Model Magic, but I was very young, so I don't recall how it felt to create it. The end result is very light weight though, kind of like a very stale marshmallow. This may be just me, but I like it when sculptures have weight to them so that they feel dense. To me, the weight makes me think that it's a more quality item rather than some lightweight plastic (for any item really). I dunno, that's just me.

I've almost finished my other sculpture. I painted the second coat the other day and all I have left is it's one eye. The left eye came out perfect the first time and looks great, but that other one.... I kept trying to make it better, but in the process, only made it worse, so since the paint was still wet I just scraped it off and let it dry. I think what I'm going to do once the eye is finished is paint over both eyes with a clear glossy finish that I got at A.C. Moore on clearance. It's called Treasure Crystal Cote and I've never used it before, so if anyone else has, I'd like to know if it's any good. It says it's highly flammable, so that's a plus ;D It even says not to use if pregnant or considering becoming pregnant... sounds like some serious stuff lol

Sorry for the week long response...

I'm stuck between Dalenbourg, Katatafisch, and Echorun.

I'm going to have to give it to Dalenbourg. I think that it's the best conceptually (plus, I kind of fell in love with the idea when it was initially posted).

Cool topic, I hope it picks up. Keramikon, what kind of paint did you use? I like how it shines for the metal.

------

I made this over a year ago. I haven't painted it. He stands about 2.5 inches tall from the nose, and is about 4 inches from the end point of tail to nose (where the shadow would fall, if it was extended straight, it would be longer). It's not based on any lizard in particular, so I'm not sure what the size ratio would be.

I have another small sculpture that I'm currently painting, but I'm not happy with it; it's very simple and not very eye catching. Nevertheless, if anyone's interested, I'll post it.

You know, that means that you'll have more time as well. I'd say take the time to enhance your piece.
If I might make a suggestion, change the color of the snow from pure white and give it some value. The solid white creates a lot of uncomfortable negative space.

Today.

Okay then.
I didn't get time yesterday to finish this no thanks to my work schedule, but nevertheless I'd say it's near completion. I was going to add another guy standing around saying, "Dude, where's my Cab?"

C.A.B. : Carrying Arctic Beast

Used for long journeys across the vast desert of the arctic regions, Cabs are the least favorite of pack/riding animals. Not because of the long fur that keeps them warm, nor from their webbed feet, creating a natural snow shoe for a quick pace. No, these Cabs aren't the favorite choice of travelers due to their nature.

Cabs are a playful species with very strong will. If for any reason they don't like you, you'll know it from their blatant disregard for directions and quirkiness. As seen in this photo, the Cab on the right has decided it would be a good time to take a roll in the snow. The Cab on the left, however, has decided that it knows where it's going and its rider doesn't need the reigns. Not pictured is the third rider who, while distracted by a group of penguins, seemed to have "misplaced" his Cab.

These fellas are so much fun, I tried very hard to bring out their personalities. I was going to complete this is full spectrum graphite, then possibly doing a digital version. I'll get to that eventually...

Frank. He's an all American mascot; he looks good and puts up a good front, but that's about it. There's only one of his kind. The Oval Office usually serves as his romping room.

Cute feller if you ask me, I'd definitely hug Frank. I should have made his mane more flowing, but ah well, what's done is done.

Notice the relation between his name, Frank, and the American love of hotdogs.

Amazingly enough, I actually finished it completely. I'm not happy with certain aspects of it, but hey, it's done.

Topic: Searching for style..

Posted: 06/08/09 07:03 PM

Forum: Art

From what I understand, you're still trying to find your own style, correct? After looking over the 5 pieces you put up, I did notice a handful of repeating characteristics.
Included are:
1) Bold outlines
2) Shading technique (usually a visible line to outline shadow, then a fill, usually cross-hatched/linear)
3) Unusual perspectives

It's hard to develop a unique style. Style is more of what the artist is comfortable with and what techniques are used most commonly. Some people tell me that I have a style, maybe not distinct where you may see one drawing and say, "Hey, I know who that is, that's definitely [insertauthor'snamehere]'s work."

I can see what they are saying as I do find a continuity in my work, but I find it extremely difficult to alter one's style. It takes a lot of work, and more than anything, it requires the artist to move outside of their comfort zone.

btw, I like the guy with the mask on page 4/5
