I use Pencil, it's a free animation software for Windows, Mac and Linux, and it's great for FBF.

Topic: Should I Animate If I Can't Draw?

Posted: 12/28/07 03:30 AM

Forum: Flash

I may look smart and talk tough, but when it comes to drawing pretty much anything, I'm severely handicapped. Today was horrible, I was just sitting infront of the computer at my animation software and I couldn't draw anything at all. I want to animate, but do you have any advice for me so that I may get better at drawing?

Whenever I see someone asking for some alternative to flash, people either say, "Just get Flash you noob!" or recommend that piece of shat called LiveSwif. Well, if you're interested in FBF, I found a software called Pencil. It has onion skinning, layers, a camera layer, smoothing and alpha channels. It doesn't support tweening, for that you're gonna have to install synfig, but synfig is still a beta, so it's kind of a bitch to install. I used to have Flash, but I uninstalled Windows for Ubuntu, which is a free linux operating system, knowing I would be without Flash and Photoshop. Pencil has served as a great alternative to Flash.

Does that sound like a good idea to anyone? Having an offficial, or unofficial iScribble for all newgrounds artists to go to? For those who don't know, iScribble is a drawing service where you open up a "chat room", then start drawing with others in that chat room.

Topic: Just Convert Gif To Swf

Posted: 10/16/07 09:51 PM

Forum: Programming

Hi guys, I'm really in need of a little help here. I want to help this guy who's an aspiring spriter and a great friend of. He wants to animate, and is already great at it. He's always practicing and now he wants to submit to Newgrounds. I believe that is a superb idea, and am now looking for a converter that will convert GIF to SWF. I've tried to install Ming, a software that claimed it could to do what I was looking for, but I can't install it, because it's compile only.

I'm still a noob to compiling stuff, such a noob, that I will only install something that has a .exe file somewhere in it. So if anyone wants to tell me how to install or compile those programs that don't have an .exe file, go ahead, but I'll probably make a thread about that later. :)

PS: Any advice is appreciated. If you don't think you can help, but have a reference or somewhere I can go to get some, please.

Get Pencil. Free software, does wonders if you're looking into fbf and has camera. It's traditional animation but on your computer. Pencilz!

I won't join since I'm still a little bit of a noob to flash, but I REALLY REALLY need to suggest something. For the tweening section, please, if you can, talk about real tweening, like how to tween a character, instead of how to tween a circle. It's difficult to learn how to tween through only a circle example. I'm sorry if I sounded a little offensive. Thanks for your time.

I just thought I'd call a little attention to this. I don't know, I've been watching the "recent submissions" lately, and there's a lot of flashes with the beginning "The Truth About..." And them some name, e.g. The Truth About Sparta. Anyway, you click on it, then there's that awesome new grounds preloader by Tom, (I think), and then whatever the titles about, like if it was "The Truth About The Justice League", The flash would have, in flashing lights, "Justice League Sucks!1"

I'm calling attention to this because a few flash authors might find it funny that some of these are actually "saved", and continue on as the crap they are. Ah well.

Disclaimer: This is just an idea for a collaboration. I WILL write it as a real collabaration, but since I have not submitted to newgrounds, and still am learning flash, I don't think it fair to lead the project. Anyone else who wants to lead, just ask, and after finding your batting average somewhat up there, I'll let you lead. Again, I am not the leader.
---------------
---------------

Welcome! I've come up with an interesting idea for a collaboration. In this spiffy project each author will create a circular shape ( circled head, a planet, a normal circle, a 3d circle, etc) and then re-draw that circle in 300 frames at 15 fps, which is 20 seconds. Think that's all? Nope:

-- There are 4 different themes, each one minute ( 3 authors per theme), and you must draw fore the theme you've chosen. I will let YOU choose the themes, so there will be some discussion.

-- The circle must move. It could be turning, rising, decreasing in size, or whatever, but it has to move, and the animation must be a little squiggly, REFERENCE: ANOTHER DAY

-- The circle will not be the only object in the picture, but it will be the only one that is shown at the beginning and the end. For example, there could be a circle, and while it is moving, a building is rising up. The building falls down at the 17 second mark, and the circle is back in the first position. Crappy example, but bear with me.

-- I luff you. :DDDD

Cool, i'll get the 4x5. It sounds good enough for me.
i'd go for the 6x8, like gorman2001 said. 4x5 inches is way too small of a drawing space to be very effective.

I've decided on the bamboo. It's the cheapest, so my parents won't get freaked on christmas. :)

How do I distribute a movie clip containing movie clips to layers in flash professional 8? I'm reading a Super Flash Bros. tutorial, and they said to right click and then select "distribute to layers", but when I right click, that option isn't there. They're using MX 2004, so does anyone know how to do it in Professional?

No, I have, but it doesn't explain. Like they only show you how to move a circle from left to right, but what if you need an arm curving or a head bobbing. Or even just something looking different on a different frame.

And I just think it'd be nice for a tutorial to go in depth on the subject, because some people might not want to try frame by frame.

Forum: Where is / How to?

I've looked at pretty much every tutorial on animation here on newgrounds, and I, along with some others, really want to tween our characters and backgrounds like those in the Xombie series. However, all of the tutorials only explain how to tween a circle, and although one tutorial did go a little more into character tweening, there just isn't enough on the subject. Some of us I'm sure just want to know the basics of tweening.

So please, someone with just a little bit of knowledge on the subject, help out and make a tutorial.

PS:
In the description for this board, it says "questions, comments, and suggestions...", That's why I'm requesting it on this board.

Thanks for your time.

I double clicked the movie clip, but when I edit the movie clip, it stays in that condition for the rest of the movie, e.g. If I take a solid line, edit it as a movie clip and make into a curvy, instead of it appearing curvy on one frame, it's curvy on EVERY frame.

Example:
I've selected a leg on my stick figure, converted it to a movie clip, and gave it it's own layer. I click on, say, frame 30, and make into a motion tween. Then for layer thirty, I want to adjust it's appearance, like if it was straight on frame 1, and then curvy on frame 2. Am I doing something wrong or do I have an incorrect definition of motion tweening and really need to go cliff jumping?

If my question is too confusing, just answer this: How can I use motion tweening when animating a character? Thank you very much for your time.

Oop, forgot to include that when I try to make the line curvy on frame 2, flash won't let me because it's a movie clip. I have to edit it as a movie clip, and when I do, EVERY frame is changed.
