-Opening Statement-
Rage is a new game by Id Software that uses Id Tech 5 which utilized OpenGL thus not requiring DirectX10. It is expected to be released sometime in 2009. This game is an action-adventure racing First Person Shooter with an open world to explore. All the information I tell you is strictly taken off of information already released. I'm just a fan. If I make any mistakes I will gladly take any corrections.
-FAQ's and Facts (Gameplay)-
The most common question people ask is that What is this game about? I'll answer right now. People think often that Rage is nothing more than a racing game with pretty graphics at first glance. Well, racing is included in this game as well as vehicles. But that's not the only thing this game is about. The cars are an 'extension' of your character or avatar which you may upgrade presumably with race earnings and enemy spoils. These may be upgraded with weapons such as machine guns and rocket launchers. After the racing game Id continued with it's signature gameplay: Sci-Fi First Person Shooter. It's no doubt from Id fans that one of the things you'll be doing is exploring the world (With your tricked out vehicle) shooting down monsters and picking up weapons. There are cities you can visit and jump from city to city as you please thus adding to the role-playing game feel.
-Graphics-Wise-
This game again utilizes the technology of Id Tech 5 and and with it comes megatexturing, large, high resolution textures that are used to replace small textures that would take hours to use if building a map. This game is very detailed; during a tech demo it was seen that you have the ability to zoom with binoculars to see the smallest details of ground textures all the way to small pebbles. Signs, debris and props are very detailed as well. And there are explosions in this game. You better believe it. Unfortunately for Xbox 360 owners graphics will be flawed due to the massive amount of disc space Rage takes on a single DVD opposed to the PS3 which all information can be stored on one blu-ray disc. Two discs will be delivered with RAGE. Id mentioned the graphical issues could be resolved with a three disc release, but the Microsoft royalty fees would be too high. However this might not be the end. It was mentioned that the issues may be worked out with Microsoft or they may find a way to cram it all into two DVD's. Back to the graphics engine, the graphics featured in this engine allow artists to paint textures over old textures without having to remove the old ones to create beautiful believable environments without having to worry about technical limitations.
-Story-
In a recent preview the story of Rage was given a sneak peek. Rage, like Mad Max and Fallout, will take place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play as one of the survivors who hid from nuclear radiation and came out to an unfamiliar, barren, desert world. At a perspective you are unfamiliar with your identity and more is revealed throughout the game. Mutants rampage the deserts on the outskirts of makeshift cities and their actions can only be described through.. well.. Rage. But they're not the only ones fighting to survive. Coalitions, gangs and mobs group together to fight to control what's left of the world. You're goal, however is at the moment unclear. But don't worry, you'll still have plenty of guns to play with. As you fight to survive against the vicious world paired against you others that share your goals and others that don't. I'm assuming you will have to do missions for them as you progress through the game, but remember it's open world so you will most probably do them when you wish.
-Wrap Up-
There's not much more I have to say about this game because it is not yet done in development and it will be finished when it is finished. I hope as many people give this game a chance as they did with Doom 3 or Quake 4. It looks great from a technical standpoint but nothing can be said as no news has been released as I write this post.
