Interesting piece of NG trivia - DEN was also the first company to offer to buy Newgrounds back when it was perceived as having value!

Anyway, the CNN studios aren't too far from me, and getting in the audience of Talkback Live is really easy. This makes me tempted... What if I made a weekly appearance? I could even try to talk sometimes or something, although I am pretty shy when it comes to expressing opinions and stuff like that. I wonder if they would let a large group of people wearing tank logo t-shirts sit in the crowd once a week... Who knows. I'll never follow through.

So Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a week away! I'm pretty damn excited. I'm also excited about all of the changes here on NG! At 10/18/02 12:05 PM, WadeFulp wrote: Alright, I didn't really want to make another front page post, but a lot of people are still confused and are brining up a lot of similar questions and concerns so I will try to briefly address them.

We are working on a rank system for voting points. As users accumulate voting points (BLAM & PROTECTION) they will go up in rank. As users go up in rank they will get cool new rank badges in their user profiles, in addition to their current Experience Level icon. As users go up in vote rank they will also gain a small vote power bonus to their voting power! Say 2% at first, but maybe as much as 50% at the top level (10 + 50% = 15). We are still working on this system but we should roll it out sometime next week. So with regards to BLAM and PROTECTION points you want to get as many of each as possible! A lot of people are complaining certain users are only going after protection points, or only after BLAMS. Well, you don't want to do that! You want to get as many of each! So if you only vote 5 on every movie, you're going to miss out on BLAM points! If you only vote 0 on every movie you will miss out on PROTECTION points! Your rank is determined by TOTAL points. So you should watch the submission and vote honestly. This will be your best chance to get as many points as possible.

Also some people want us to have a separate total for users who cast the triggering vote causing a movie to either be protected or blammed. We will not do this. This was the whole problem before! Users would hold back their vote to try and get a BLAM point! We want this to be a team effort and reward everyone who participates!

Some people are saying the system is failing because of all the color coded movies in the TOP 50 most recent list. This is not the system failing, it is the system working! The reason there are so many color coded movies is because all the crap is being deleted off the portal very quickly now! Before a good movie would be pushed off the top 50 list in a day or less. Now with the flood of crap under control a good movie can stay on the 50 most recent list for around 4 days! This give the submission much more time to receive feedback, views, and votes! All pluses for the submitter! Also in the past some movies never got enough votes to allow them to be color coded! So a good movie may have left the list without getting enough votes to be coded! Now a good movie is color coded very quickly!

We have a lot of things we are working on. We are working on the log in problem (some people are being logged out and not staying logged in). We will address allowing users to select their favorite portal submissions in their profile, rather than it being based on their reviews. We will be adding lists to the portal so users can look up movies that need votes either to be protected or blammed. We will let users view BLAMMED submission's reviews, so authors can see where they went wrong. So over the next couple of months a lot of these issues will be resolved, just give us a chance! :) LilJim is already far exceeding any of our expectations and is working as fast as he can. So let's be sure to give him thanks for making all these ideas happen! wade how soon will the new features be upand running

I'm not going to spoil it for you. You know it's about Columbine, you know it's about guns, you know it's about the good 'ol USA. There's much more there though, and when you go to the theater you will see. The media, Bush, and Charlton Heston all get shown in a really nice light. Needless to say I walked out of there with a big fat smile.

After seeing it a friend reminded me of a column written by infamous love advice columnist Dan Savage called FEAR THE GEEK: Littleton's Silver Lining that was published right after "it happened." I thought this was an amazing article. I wrote something similar on whatever stupid website I was writing for at that point, and got a lot of shit for it. I won't link that, because Dan says what I wanted to much better. Guess that's why he gets paid. If you haven't read the column, you really should go read it right now. He talks about how insane it was that people were shocked about this, because honestly, it was only a matter of time.

Even more amazing is a reply written by a former Columbine High School student. I'd never seen this until another friend sent it my way recently. I'll let you read that for yourself, but if you want to download a copy this should help.

"Finally, an article addresses what is really going on here ("Fear the
Geek: Littleton's Silver Lining"). I actually used to live in Littleton,
and went to Columbine High School. I totally agree with this story. When I
went there, I was having the same exact problems and no one cared at all.
One day I was walking outside during lunch when some jocks decided it was
my turn to be beaten. One of the started hitting me to impress his
friends... I hit him once in the face and ended up on the ground. One
teacher was right there and did nothing to stop it. I was sent to the
proncipal's office and told that I should try to 'fit in' with the rest of
the students and not wear black clothes. All I can tell you is that on days
like that (and there were many), I could have shot them all. I ended up
leaving the school, and driving to the next town every day to attend an
alternative high school. I learned more there in the first week than I did
in the three years I went to Columbine. When I talk with friends who went
there, not even one person was surprised this could happen. We were just
surprised it didn't happen sooner."

-Jason DeTrempe

I read that and all I cound think was "right on." People talking about schools being a safe haven for kids are smoking crack. Where the hell did they go to school? Little House On The Prarie High? I could go on for hours about the crap I put up with in school, or worse the crap I saw other people have to put up with. I got suspended my freshman year for bringing a gun to school. Luckily for me that was YEARS before anyone got the balls to smoke some other kid, otherwise I would still be in jail. Even I had no plans for it. It was a broken bb gun for crying out loud, but only I knew that, and I was sure that if some nameless people (who are probably still in Bradenton dreaming about their HS football glory days) thought I might snap and do something really stupid, they would just leave me alone. The point is, the kids who have the cool clothes, drive the nice cars, don't have zits, get laid, are the kids the schools smile on. The kids who don't, don't. The whole system is designed to make kids fall in line, and it has no mercy on those who don't. These kids, who take guns to school and shoot other people, hell kids who shoot other people even outside of school are sick. They are totally out of their heads, but having been though the public (and private for that matter) school system, I know how they got that way. There come a point when a lot of kids have to make a decision to rise above the steaming pile of shit they are stuck in and show everyone else up by actually doing something with their lives, or giving in to the hate and doing something like this. If people realized how many kids made that decision on a daily basis, and congradulated the kids who made the right choice, we'd be in a hell of a lot better situation. Me, I'm surprised this dosen't happen more oftin.

hey SeanI hate to hear of school shootings there really fucked up sure so kids get real pissed and the world but shooting up your school is not the way to go, and It's really sad blowing for Columbine was cool. though

We have decided this was unfair to everyone else who contributed in BLAMMING a movie. So now when you log in and you vote either 0 or 1 on a movie and it ends up getting BLAMMED, you will receive a BLAM point! Currently users hold back their vote to try and be the one to get the BLAM point. This causes the Portal to be less efficient. With the new system users will be encouraged to vote as quickly as possible or risk losing their chance at a point!

On the other side of the coin, users voting 2-5 on a movie that doesn't get BLAMMED will be rewarded with a PROTECTION point. We may come up with a snazzier term for this down the road, any suggestions? So if you vote 0 on a good movie, you may risk getting no points as all! Also if you vote 5 on a crappy movie, you will risk losing a point.

The first vote you cast is the vote that will be recorded in our system. This means you better watch the submission and submit an honest vote, as you can't come back the next day and submit a different vote to try and get a point.

We are also debating what to do about the auras. We have found a lot of people vote 0 on good movies just to get a DARK aura. Forum: NG News

At 10/4/02 12:35 PM, TomFulp wrote: Ok... We haven't been getting swarmed with complaints about some of the recent changes, so I'm feeling empowered to keep on messing around. :)

I have temporarily removed the Pico voting animation - so when you vote on movies, you will get the old text-based version. I tested it out and it seemed to get the job done fine.

I don't intend to permanently remove the Pico animation, but I want to see how site performance is changed by the switch. There was an issue where the Pico animation did not cache in browsers. This sucked for 56k users, but also sucked for us because every time someone voted, it was re-downloading a 120k file that could have been cached in their browser.

The reason why it didn't cache was because the variables were passed to the .swf file directly in the html code - making the file name a random assortment of variables every time, and not recognizable by the cache.

There is a way to work around this using SWLiveConnect to import the variables into Flash - so the filename can remain consistent. I tried this many months ago, but users were getting errors. It turns out that Macintosh IE users can't use this function.

Sooo... The ultimate goal is to have both versions. MacIE users will get the text version, as well as anyone who chooses the text version in their prefs. Everyone else will get the Pico animation, which will theoretically cache once in their browser and stay there.

In the meantime - what does everyone think of the text page? Do you like it better anyway? Should we bother to bring back the Pico animation? It sure made voting fun - right? Right?!

AND ONE MORE THING... I'm not 100% sure what will happen when you BLAM a movie on this old version of the code. If anyone blams a movie, let me know if everything works ok - there should be a fun oldskool blam animation that pops up if everything still works.

hey Tom I love the Pico voting it made it way more fun for me

At 10/3/02 10:08 AM, TomFulp wrote: Some important announcements on the tech-side of Newgrounds:

1) LilJim has been sweeping through a lot of our back-end code and making improvements. You will notice that there are some small changes to the BBS, and he is also making changes to upgrade performance.

Right now we are tackling the user session system. We are completely overhauling how our system tracks user sessions, which won't be visible to the user, but should make the site run better. In the meantime, there is an issue where if you are logged in for 20 minutes, your session expires - even if you are being active. Some users have found that in the time it takes them to vote on 5 movies, their session expires before they can deposit the points. We are sorry about this and the issue will be corrected soon. :)

** Right now some people may be asking, "Where is Ross?" - I'll admit we have been rather quiet about the subject. When the internet bubble burst, Ross took a full-time job with another company. He has been doing very well, but over time balancing the two jobs became too time consuming. Ross is still around in spirit, but is not really involved in coding NG stuff nowadays.

Moving along...

2) I just updated the fan-net "join" page. Now, when you join the fan-net, you are give new code to use for displaying the fan-net logo/button. Users using the old code won't have any problems, but I recommend updating to help support NG.

In addition to now being only 60 pixels vertical (so it can sit along-side a banner ad without looking ugly), there are some more important changes that are meant to optimize NG performance:

I removed the nifty "rank" value from the Fan-Net buttons, because it required accessing a text file on Newgrounds to retrieve your rank - this means that every site in the fan-net was not only hitting our server for the .swf file, but also hitting it again to retrieve the rank value.

I also now ask that users download the .swf and host it on their sites. It is under 5k, so it will probably load a lot faster running on your site than running on ours. I'm just trying to keep hits to NG's servers at a minimum.

If you would like to join the fan-net, simply log into your user account and choose the option to "JOIN FAN-NET". If you are already a member, you can click the link to "VIEW FAN-NET CODE". You will get the new code.

On a more exciting note, last night while attending Political Party here in Atlanta, I encountered a man wearing a SHOTGUN MAN T-SHIRT! Shotgun Man is the Assassin mascot, for anyone who has not seen that part of the site. His wife said it was his favorite shirt. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!

hey Tom the grounds gold has been saying that I'm logged in but when I vote it says I'm not logged I hope you can fix it:(

One of the most irritating things about living in Florida is the danger of land falling hurricanes. In the past two weeks we have gotten two direct impacts from Tropical Storm Hanna, and Tropical Storm Isidore. Now we have Tropical Storm Lili to worry about. Two storms hitting in two short weeks is happenstance, but three storms in one month? That's damn near impossible. I swear if this one hits I am going to move out west to some desert state where the only thing I need to worry about are the fucking coyotes rummaging through my trash at night.

Needless to say this doesn't help my project development much, seeing as how I shake more than a chihuahua in a freezer every time one of these fucking things wanders into the Gulf of Mexico. I really think the world hates me, and I am positive that these things were created for the sole purpose of royally pissing me off.

If living here isn't bad enough, I have to deal with white trash who actually want these things to hit, just so their lazy, inbred asses don't have to go to school. "Blackouts are Fun!" they say, "I hope it's really strong so I can get out of school for weeks!" It's enough to make me want to shove a lighted match up their pissholes. Blackouts are the single most irritating thing about the whole ordeal. If I don't stare at a computer screen, and have a steady stream of microwaves hit my retina for at least four hours a day, I go through this horrible moody withdrawal, similar to what smokers go through when they can‘t toke. It's sad but true.

Well anyway, I just thought I'd blow off some steam today. Maybe I can be arsed into working on Mobius Fighter this weekend. I've also got some other projects lined up, including a Mega Man X style side scroller, and two new manga series. All this assuming I have the energy to get off my lazy ass and actually work on said projects. Well anyway, keep an eye out for a Mobius Fighter intro/teaser sometime next month. Some of the Chatroom regulars talked me into releasing one. The intro is finished for the most part, but needs some touch up. We just got a new database administrator, so he's kind of breaking himself in right now.

Sorry for the delay in it... we just keep adding more and more stuff to it all the time. It'll be worth the wait though, it's going to be quite the insane flash gaming experience once it's all finished.

And speaking of insanity, I had to share a little something with you. I just wrote a piece on The Greatest Commercial EVER and it's something you MUST check out. I swear, when I first saw it, I watched this commercial over 20 times. You'll see what I mean when you check it out. See Arnold Schwarzenegger like you've never seen him before!

The Greatest Commercial... EVER!:
http://www.I-Mockery.com/minimocks/Commercial

Also added to the site recently are some new Rom Hacks including Beeralaga and Ernie And The Muppets Take It All Off!

I've also created a step-by-step tutorial explaining how you can turn an ordinary stick of ChapStick into a DEADLY WEAPON! Don't think it's possible? Well then read all about the Chapstick Dartgun!

And finally, I've also added a brand new Things That Must Be Destroyed list and updated the General Zod site about how Zod finds it easy to get a job even in today's horrible economy.

Welp, that's all for now. Tom and I will keep you posted on the progress of our upcoming flash game. Until then, keep your l33t gaming skills honed with Alien Hominid and come check out the rest of I-Mockery soon for some more big updates, including upcoming Halloween features.

We are trying to get to the bottom of this - there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the servers (beyond their regular slowness anyway). It is possible that we are getting a huge traffic spike from somewhere - I heard that the UK edition of FHM ranks Newgrounds as the #6 greatest website in their October issue (confirmations?), so that could possibly have something to do with it.

When we get traffic spikes, we encounter the Three Stooges Effect - too many people try to get through the door at once, and no one can squeeze through. So our traffic stats actually go down as the site runs worse. We'll never know just how many people are actually trying to hit the site.

We are going to upgrading the servers soon. Stay tuned!

Tom this is very annoying cuase I can't vote and stuff It would let me post on the boards sometimes I hope you fix it soon man

Now, I may be stupid, but I always thought a parody was supposed to joke or mock the orginal. All this "parody" did was show us what we've seen before, a plain MK fight. To me it felt like I was watching two friends fight each other in MK, while I sat back and was bored. To make a long story short, I'd like all of you who haven't seen it to check out my MORTAL KOMBAT DIRECTOR'S CUT and decide what really is the Ultimate MK parody. CLICK HERE TO SEE IT Then watch Ironclaw's HERE and post what you think of each. Now keep in mind my movie was made from NES sprites which are of lower quality of arcade sprites, and have much less animation.

hey Randy I like both movies equlay there both awsome but yours is better man

The guys at "Ready Fight" productions would like NG users to check out their new movie, Kung Fu Legends 2, now playing on their website. They believe that "the opinions of newgrounds goers will be very helpful in our pursuit to create better kungfu for all."

This movie kicks ass, so definitely take a look and post your thoughts!

And yes, I'm all settled in Atlanta right now and programming away. I'll try to have something up soon!

Tom that movie was awsome can't wait to see what surpise you have in store:)

Sticker Ordering Information

At this time payment options are limited to mainly US Cash or US Money Orders. If you are outside of the US you will have to send US currency as we are not excepting foreign money orders. I am not sure how easy US currency is to obtain around the world, so please leave a comment letting me know if it's easy or hard!

Also we are excepting fan mail, videos, donations, gifts, etc. to our PO BOX. The address is now listed on our contact page and also on the sticker ordering page, but here it is:

Newgrounds.com
PO BOX 480
Perkasie, PA 18944

Please don't send Anthrax or anything resembling it. :) I don't think you'd like the FBI coming after you for a stupid prank.

We are also going to except photos of fans with their stickers and put the best ones in a photo gallery on Newgrounds.com! So after you order your stickers, stick them on yourself, a cool or funny place, and snap some pictures! There are more details about this on the sticker ordering page.

So leave us some comments about the US currency issue and the stickers!

Awsome stickers wade to bad I'm not allowed to order online

At 9/2/02 09:43 PM, TomFulp wrote: I was away this past weekend, but it has come to my attention that some HARDCORE PORN POP-UP ads were loading on Newgrounds. These ads feature penetration and other graphic sexual stuff.

While NG does tip-toe on the line of porn, we do not support these especially explicit ads. They are running through our third-party ad code without permission.

Troma is currently trying to pinpoint which third party ad company has been running these ads, and are trying to pull them from circulation. It's a mess because the third party ad companies run outside third party ad code when they run out of inventory, and it gets to a point where you don't know WHERE your ads are coming from anymore.

Sorry for the really nasty pop-ups. They MIGHT be gone already, but should be in the next 24 hours if not. If you see them after reading this post, feel free to respond and let me know. If you see them in conjunction with any NORMAL pop-up ads, please notify me, because that may also help us pinpoint where they are coming from. Hey Tom I get a big pile of them everytime I'm on the site there annoying as hell Hope you can remove them soon man good luck buddy

I was hoping to finish this week so SYNJ and I could submit the game with both levels to an indy game competition, but alas, we will have to settle for just level one.

The good news is, we have spiced up level one - when we release the new version, expect some fresh suprises before you get to level two!

In other news... I was also hoping to release the game I have been working on with I-Mockery this week. This is also running a little longer than originally planned, but only because we keep making it MUCH COOLER. When Alien Hominid is giving me a headache, rather than taking a walk outside I have been working on this other game. It currently encompasses three different play styles, with a fourth being added next - it is total gaming insanity, and just keeps getting crazier!

For now, we have had some great Portal entries recently, so keep playing with those! :)

Tm you should also have more guns and other powerups and make the that chopper better looking with new guns like missile
