Whenever you add a child, it is automatically placed on top of all other children. To keep it on top, try something like this (untested):

addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,function() {
setChildIndex(myMovieClip,numChildren - 1);
});

The design is awesome, but things are a little too spaced out IMO. Just decrease the space between the sections and I think it will be fine.

I believe you can either use this["name" + i] or MovieClip(root)["name" + i], but I would suggest using an array as the person above said.

I think if you just increased the friction it would be fine. I like how the speed makes you have quick reflexes, and the disappearing walls add an extra level of difficulty, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think making the disappearing walls a different color will completely defeat the purpose of having them, so I say keep it how it is.

First off, .png files don't support animation. Try saving as a .gif, then using a converter such as this one.

Everyone has different opinions about CS4. Personally, I'm a programmer not an animator, so CS4 wasn't really worth the upgrade for me. I know a lot of animators love the new 3D support and bone tool though. I'd suggest you download the free trial for both, and decide for yourself if CS4 is worth the extra money.

Are Linux and Mac not OSes anymore? Because last time I checked they were...

System restore resets your system to the last time you created a restore point. If half your settings get deleted, you aren't setting restore points often enough. Just because you don't know how something works and/or how to use it properly, doesn't mean it's "moronic".

I don't know the Einstein's brain works, therefore it's moronic...

Topic: What version of Flash do you use?

Posted: 03/21/09 02:21 PM

Forum: Flash

If you're wanting to code, I would suggest CS3 as it's the first version to support AS3, and should be cheaper than CS4. If you really want, you can get CS4, but there really isn't much different on the coding side (as far as I know). If you're into animating, the newer the version, the more features you will have (e.g. CS4 has added bones, basic 3D, a new motion editor, etc. all of which were unavailable in previous versions)

As far as I know, anything you can do in Flash 8 you can do in CS3, so there really isn't any reason to use it (unless it's a matter of cost)

Topic: Osiron Alpha - Need Feedback!

Posted: 03/19/09 02:00 PM

Forum: Flash

I've been working on a new abstract strategy/puzzle game called Osiron, and I'm looking for some feedback. The newest version of the game can be found here. It's still a major work-in-progress, and there's still a lot of work to be done, but the core gameplay features are pretty much done.

Since there are no instructions in-game, I'll post them here. There are three different game modes, one 2-player mode, and two single-player modes.

Osiron Classic - 2 Players
This is the classic Osiron game. Rules can be found on the OsironGallery.com website. In case you're too lazy to read that much, here's a shorter version. Players take turns swapping one of their pieces with an adjacent enemies piece. The first one to completely fill one of the seven interlocking circles with their pieces wins. You cannot win by filling a circle which was filled with your pieces at the beginning of the game.

Osiron's Dusk to Dawn - 1 Player
The goal is to create the inverse of the design's color scheme in as few moves as possible. At the end of the game, all of the light-colored pieces should be where the dark pieces were at the beginning of the game, and vice-versa. To move pieces, click the center of one of the seven interlocking-circles to select it, then click and drag the circle to spin it. and all of it's pieces.

Osiron's Prism - 1 Player
Similar to Osiron's Dusk to Dawn, except now there are 6 different colors. The goal is to arrange all of the pieces with the same color next to each other in a triangle shape, with each triangle pointing towards the middle, so that it looks like a color wheel. In case this doesn't make sense (which I'm sure it doesn't), here's an image of what the board should look like when it's completed. Note that it does not matter which color is where. Movement of the pieces is the same as in Osiron's Dusk to Dawn.

I'd appreciate any feedback about the game. Specifically, I'd like these questions answered:

1. Is the game fun and easy to learn?
2. Are the single-player games too hard or too easy?
3. Have you been able to find any bugs?
4. Are the visuals okay? (they are still a work-in-progress, so any suggestions are welcome)
5. Do you like the music/sound effects?
6. Do you have any ideas for new gameplay features for any of the game modes?

Any other comments, suggestions, complaints, etc. are welcome as well. I hope everyone enjoys it, and if you're interested, be sure to check my user page every once in a while for updates!

nothing on the keyboard, etc. etc.
the only thing it does is sit there.. on,, and beeps every few seconds...

so yeah.. WTF?

A computer not starting could be caused by any number of things. Usually, the beeping is an error code from the motherboard trying to tell you something's wrong. I'd look in the user manual for the motherboard (look online if you don't have it), and figure out what exactly the beeps mean. That should help you narrow down the problem. Some computers also have little lights on the back that indicate errors when booting up.

If that doesn't help, try making sure all cables inside of the machine are firmly connected, and try setting the CMOS jumper (again, look in the motherboards manual to find out how to, it's different for every motherboard). You could also try taking everything out that isn't necessary for the computer to turn on (e.g. network card, graphics card, hard drive, etc.) to see if it's causing the problem. If the beeping stops, put things back in one by one until you figure out who was the culprit.

If that fails, you'll probably just have to take it into a repair shop and have them take a look at it.

Topic: Is it harder to make games in

Posted: 03/11/09 10:36 PM

AS3 is probably harder if you have no prior programming experience, but it's much more powerful, and its OOP support makes it much easier, and almost essential, for games which are very large and/or complex.

I don't have any experience with rhythm games, but I'm pretty confident I could figure it out =)

Topic: Osiron Playable Prototype

Posted: 03/05/09 10:24 PM

Forum: Flash

I've uploaded a playable prototype of my current project called Osiron, which can be found here.

There are three game modes (only 2 are playable in this prototype):

Osiron Classic - The original 2-player Osiron game. Rules can be found here. On your turn, click one of your pieces to select it, then click one of your opponents pieces to swap them.

Osiron's Dusk to Dawn - A single player puzzle-type game, with a similar feel to a Rubik's Cube. The goal is to create the inverse of the design's color scheme in as few moves as possible. The end gameboard result should find all original dark playing pieces now occupied by light colored ones, and all original light playing pieces now occupied by dark colored ones. Click the center of a circle to select it, move the mouse left and right to rotate it, and click to lock the circle in position.

Osiron's Prism - Not yet available.

I've been working on this for less than a week, so it's still a major work-in-progress, and there's still a lot more work to be done on it. The final version will feature all three game modes, many different board layouts, selectable boards and pieces, and more. If you have any suggestions or comments, or found any bugs, please post here or PM me.

Please let me know what you think!

Topic: Actionscript 3 classes?

At 3/3/09 10:40 PM, OOGIDIBA wrote:

:i was just wondering if anything, what the advantage of classes are do you as3 pros use them? So far it seems like it just makes things more tedious to code. for example in as2 when i would code say a guy moving i would simply just through this on the frame

onEnterFrame = function(){
if(Key.isDown(whatever)){
guy._x++ or something
}
}
but it seems, atleast so far from what ive seen that in the book on as3 i would have to go about it by making a bunch of .as file classes then importing them into the flash

You can still put all of your code in the .fla just as you could in AS2. AS3 gives you the option of using OOP. The advantage of OOP may not be immediately apparent when working on small projects, when you start working on large projects with thousands of lines of code, organizing your code into classes makes things much easier to manage, and can increase productivity. In addition, if you make your classes abstract enough, you can easily re-use them in multiple projects without having to change any of the code.

For a little more info on OOP, I suggest you read the wikipedia page on the subject, or just search around google a bit. Don't worry about what language the articles are talking about, the concepts are the same. The Java OOP Tutorials on the Sun website are pretty good from what I remember (and the Java syntax is very similar to AS3 as well).

At 3/3/09 10:40 PM, OOGIDIBA wrote: also if where to ever manage to make something using theses classes, if i submited it onto a site such as newgrounds. would i need to somehow submit all the .as files or does the .swf contain all the code from the .as files? i tried deleting the .as after doing a tutorial in the book where it makes a red ball appear and the ball was still there after i deleted it in the swf. so i assume you dont need the .as files for the swf to work

When Flash creates the SWF, all of the AS files get compiled and placed into the SWF, meaning once the SWF is created, you no longer need the AS files anymore (other than for editing).
