Their was no need to make that public knowledge.
Hmm, I ain't entirely sure on that. There are/were still 5,000 troops in NI, but that's more like a standard garrison force, than a peacekeeping force. CIRA, and RIRA, actually... MI5/MI6 has publically stated they don't have a great deal of information - they have it on old members, but not the younger lads, of 17-21, which are the majority of their members. Problem is, stuff like that would have come out later, or been leaked to the media, it always is.
"those who thrive on chaos" would be the loyalists. Sinn Fein are making progress in Stormont. Recently the things they have used to delay reunification, such as the Provos still being active or republican communities not accepting the RUC have been resolved. They were even thinking about brining down the peace barriers for gods sake.
Hmm, I would regard a minority of the republican paramilitaries as being in for the chaos - it's the same with any group, there are just people like that. The Loyalists, I'd agree, they're just in it for the fighting. But... the recent comments by Martin McGuiness, have actually been explained - two of those who got arrested, were defectors from PIRA, who went to RIRA, last year - hence the "Traitors to the island of Ireland." comment. As I say - RIRA, and CIRA, are in it for the chaos, nothing else.
If their ever was going to be an escalation the loyalists would be re-armed at some point I have no doubts about that. Maybe troops would be deployed on the streets before that happened but it would happen like it did years ago. I would even say their are more loyalist dissidents than republican ones as they still have "shows of strength" in both Ireland and Scotland.
I don't doubt it - there were a lot less of the weapons by the Loyalists decommisioned, but as the PSNI have said, the weapons used last weekend, weren't any of the old ones, they appeared to have been smuggled in. I wouldn't be suprised at them doing something bloody stupid, however. But, soldiers getting redeployed... Ain't gonna happen. It'd be completely against the agreement of the GFA, and stupid to do so. Nobody wants a return to the past.
I have respect for some of the PIRA members - they actually didn't enjoy causing loss of life, but these people... I detest. The Omagh bombing, which claimed the lives of 28 people, was caused by RIRA, for instance. Disgusting.Nobody enjoyed causing loss of life unless it was a soldier or police officer during the war. As I said I support the peace process so I dont agree with what the dissidents do. Sure go ahead and detest them. At least you seem to differentiate between those opposed to peace and those who work towards it. Instead of the blanket generalisation of "terrorist scum" the media use most of the time.
There were some who did, but it was a rarity, I admit. Mind you, "collaboraters" were just as good targets, so... Hmm. I want peace in NI, and those bastards that work against it, wanting to replace PIRA, now that they've disarmed - which is effectively what they want to do, and what RIRA said it was trying to do when it formed, as far as I am aware.
At least more of them have been arrested - thankfully, the Loyalists didn't do anything bloody stupid.

These forces have absolutely no reason to be their, they have no reason to return. And so their you have a reason for this.
But folks know the difference. Their are two sides to the republican moment today. You have those who agree with the Good Friday agreement and support the peace process. Sinn Fein and the Provisional IRA and you have those opposed to the peace process and believe an armed campaign is still the way forward. Those groups are known as "dissident republicans" by the media and they are Continuity IRA and the Real IRA (INLA and 32CSM to a lesser extent) Its still unknown what will come of this at this moment in time. Still don't know if the Loyalists will be rearmed by the British government or act on their own in some revenge attack.
Its too soon to say anything.

Hmm, actually... the SRR has every right to be there. They were in london in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings, for one. NI doesn't have the intelligence gathering capabilities to apprehend RIRA, or CIRA. There was intel which suggested that an attack was coming up, hence the SRR's redeployment to the province. It's much the same as if MI5, or MI6 agents were deployed again. Just different in name, to be honest.
And, saying that the loyalists will get re-armed by the British government? Are you out of your mind? The loyalists want feck all to do with this, and aren't going to attack. Too much work has been done, and nobody, apart from those who thrive on chaos, want a return to the violence of the late 70's/late 80's.
6 have been arrested - 3 in relation to the 2 sappers shooting, and the 3 in regards to the PSNI officer's shooting. The situation isn't going to deteriorate, as neither RIRA, or CIRA, have the capacity to waste men, as in total, they only number maybe... 70-80 people?

Considering the fact that we, the british, are already involved in wars on 2 fronts, not to mention NATO operations... (which the Germans and French dont contribute to... )
it would be disastrous.. and considering a war with Iran be looming, we'd end up dragged into that, and considering theres already clashes on the border (SAS/Delta force units trying to stop the arms traffickers coming from Iran)
we would be hideously overstretched.. considering the US armed forces are claiming they are over stretched, the UK forces would be crippled, as funds are not being alocated to defence..
which is a bit of a bugger..
This is an article in the British Sunday Times:
OUTLAWED militias are emerging from the shadows in the Balkans as Kosovo hurtles towards an independence deadline on December 10 that is likely to trigger a confrontation with Serbia.
Deep frustration with the West's stalled bid to grant the province full autonomy in the face of Serbian and Russian opposition threatens to embroil the region in another round of bloodletting.
The Albanian National Army (ANA), a guerrilla group branded as "terrorists" by the United Nations in 2003, has already resurfaced, brandishing sophisticated sniper rifles and Kalashnikovs and pledging to "protect" Kosovo's vulnerable northern fringe from Serbian aggression.
Kosovo's Serbian minority, heavily backed by Belgrade, is arming itself in anticipation of a unilateral declaration of independence from the provincial government. Kfor, Nato's 16,000-strong force, might be caught in the middle of a conflict potentially involving Russia as well.
Last week The Sunday Times met three members of the ANA at a secret location half an hour from Pristina. "The situation in Kosovo lately has obliged us to take up our weapons again because we have seen the failure of the international community," said one of the men, who identified himself with the nickname Astriti.
He claimed the militia already carried out road patrols and erected nighttime checkpoints close to the Serbian border, near the municipality of Podujevo: "We are concentrated in north Kosovo since the population there is threatened by Serbian bands and regular military forces. They have been neglected by Nato forces and the Kosovo police."
On December 10 a high level "troika" of senior Russian, American and European diplomats will present a report on the future status of Kosovo to Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general. The province has been under UN control since 1999 when Nato bombing drove out Serbian forces amid gross human rights abuses on both sides.
Kosovo's government, which faces a general election on November 17, has already said it may declare independence if the international community fails to take a decision by that deadline.
Among the groups braced for action is the War Veterans' Association of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) - one of the largest and most successful guerrilla movements in recent history. Former KLA leaders say they are prepared to dust off their guns and renounce the ceasefire if provoked by Serbia.
"The delay of the Kosovo status decision has raised dissatisfaction among the population, especially among the former liberators," said Avdyl Mushkolaj, a former KLA commander for the region of Dukagjini.
"This is the real end, we won't allow any further playing with our destiny.
"If the status decision is delayed there is a big danger that the situation will run out of control. It will most probably start with protests that will turn to violence. None of our politicians have enough support to calm any riots."
Mushkolaj insisted that while there was no appetite for war, the KLA's structures, hierarchy and weapons still existed and could be rapidly mobilised. "The KLA is alive. Its members are still alive and willing to do another war if needed," he said.
In a region where experience has shown that a fragile peace can be shattered in an instant, politicians on both sides have admitted that the diplomatic stand-off could lead to renewed military action or even a wider war.
"If there is a small fire in Kosovo, Serbia will put oil on the fire," said Blerim Kuci, Kosovo's interior minister. Such a conflict would have wider international implications: Serbia is backed by Russia, while the United States and most of the European Union support Kosovo's independence bid. Kuci warned that any delay in the decision on status would create "a fertile ground for extremist elements" and lead to violence on the streets.
"A new political force would emerge on the scene by using violent means. This would be accompanied by protests and social tensions," Kuci said.
Serbia has fired its own warning shots. Marko Jaksic, one of Serbia's negotiators in the status talks and a close ally of Vojislav Kostunica, the Serbian prime minister, cautioned last week that "Belgrade will not stand peacefully by while the territory is taken.
"In a case of recognition of independence there will be a radicalisation of Serbia," Jaksic said. "There will be a fast arming of Serbia, even creating Russian military bases in Serbia, something like Iran today."
Attempts by the Kosovo assembly to declare unilateral independence could be met with "military" resistance, he argued: "From that moment the battle will begin for the reintegration of Kosovo into Serbia."
Such statements from Belgrade have struck a chord with the Serbian minority in Kosovo who, like the Albanians, fear ethnic reprisals against them.
Sources close to the police in the ethnically divided northern town of Mitrovica, where some of the most bitter tensions have occurred since the end of the war, claimed that the authorities had been handing out weapons to those fearful of renewed violence.
Mladen Vukicevic, a 36-year-old charity worker from the northern - and Serbian - part of the town, said that people were nervous. He knew of one cache of guns that he would be prepared to use.
"I would definitely fight to defend myself and my family. I don't believe in the UN or in Kfor. I need to believe only in myself," he said.
Worrying eh?
