Another thing I have just noticed is Adblock seems to have stopped blocking adverts. I don't know if that's related at all.

Tried that and tried switching over the network cables so my laptop plugs into a different socket on the router, but neither worked.

What does your network address say? I had a problem like this before and it kept on repeating 127.0.0.1 which is not a real network address. (meh I don't think mods should have a problem with ip address posting, as it's shown all the time in emails and some sites.) If my theories are right, Tor screwed up your network settings :)

It's 192.168.0.2 which should be the IP address of my computer on the LAN network.

That's the thing, I've used Tor before on different computers and had no issues at all, but it's just that the problems started happening almost immediately after I installed it.

Ok, ever since I installed a proxy program called "Tor" I've been having trouble with the internet on my laptop.
At least once a day my laptop seemingly loses connection to the internet and I get a message on Firefox saying "The connection was refused when attempting to contact <a ny website address I enter>" now at first, I thought that it was just my ISP having trouble, but after I tried the other computers in the house the internet worked fine on them and I also noticed if I had a download running on Firefox, utorrent, etc the download continued unless I stopped the download and started it again at which point it would just not work.
I've tried everything I can think of to fix this. I used system restore, I made sure Tor was completely uninstalled, but now I'm out of ideas.

Can anyone help? is there a way I can fix the internet settings (or whatever is going wrong) without having to completely reinstall windows?

Technical information:
Operating system - Vista Ultimate
laptop - Dell Inspiron 1520
router - Netgear DG834 (wired connection)
Browsers - Google chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera
