Instead of having Pokemon Trainer, why not have Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle as separate playable characters in the game. And depending on how well each starter pokemon does, they evolve on to their next phase in battle.

I would rather them just keep what they did originally and get rid of the fatigue thing and have a second trainer with a Blastoise/Charmeleon/Bulbasaur team.

Fine, they put winning above having fun. They're still having fun in the process, isn't that what counts? Besides, doesn't every other person that plays every other game/sport/whatever competitively have the same mentality? Why is it just smash brothers that gets all the heat from casual players?

They'll do anything. Spam, camp, and a lot of them even decide to use broken characters so they :can win, They admit to doing this JUST to win.

Who decided that stuff was dishonorable in the first place? As I said before people have found ways around that stuff to the point where it's not a problem for them so I fail to see problem behind using those tactics. And since when did picking up different characters was considered to be a bad thing? If a character doesn't turn out to work for somebody they pickup another one that does, if it turns out to be a top tier character so be it and what about the people who legitimately likes using those "broken" characters competitively, are they tourneyfags too?

Lots of threads in character boards saying "I'm leaving this ___ character to use (insert top tier character here).

Care to point out these threads? I've never seen them.

Most tournaments have banned these infinite tactics though, Ice Climbers are only allowed to do 3 grabs in a row in some tourneys.

And in tourneys where those tactics are allowed the ice climbers barely ever win they don't even place in the top eight all the time. I can only name one player of the top of my head that that can do anything with them. If those chain grabs are so powerful why aren't they winning every tournament ever?

King Dedede can only infinite DK and Bowser, that is only 2 characters. Yes I said two because with Mario, Luigi, and Samus Dedede can only do the standing chain grab 5 times after that the move becomes too stale to do again and Dedede has to pummel 5 times to refresh it. At that point those characters can break out and it has been shown that characters can do an instant grab break as high as 130%.

And it's almost impossible to win from a good Metaknight player, that's why they banned Metaknight at some tournaments.

http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.ph p?t=165954

Meta knight only has 26% of all the winnings that shows that other characters are winning despite how good meta knight is. Plus there are characters that go close to even with him like Snake, Diddy, DK, ZSS , Falco, and there are bunch that don't completely suck against. It's just required to be better than your opponent.

I still think that the guys are having fun, but I think they'd choose winning above fun. What money can do, heh?

Getting money from playing a video game? Sound like a lot of fun to me.

If you detest any kind of spam...you might not fit into the tournament setting that well...

All of these chain grabs and forced approaches being thrown around.
That's what it's like on smashboards. They are so fixated on winning that they care nothing of "fair play" or "honor", or even having fun for that matter. In fact, their motto is "play to win"

I really don't see whats the big deal with spam and chain grabs. I mean other people have found ways around that stuff to the point were its not a problem for them and I don't really mind it when people use those techniques against me.

Also, who's to say these people aren't having fun. People keep going to these tournaments so obviously they're having fun despite the lack of "fair play" or" honor." What makes your fun more valid than their fun?

Ugh no, level 9's are horrible to practice against. You can do things to them that will never work on a human and you can make plenty of mistakes that computers won't punish you for. There are just times where they do the most dumbest things.
When ever I want to train against a computer I set it to level 3-5 most of the time just to get a better idea on the spacing of characters and basics but that's about it.

Getting more experience against other people would probably be better.

Well that's quite a shame I hoping to play against you. I'm actually weak against those tactics and I was hoping that I could learn a way around them.
And really you shouldn't have to change your play style just because of a couple of whiners. But hey if it's really something you want to do I can't stop you.

For the record I'm mostly neutral on the matter.

At 10/16/08 04:03 PM, ramun-flame wrote:
You guys weren't the first to tell me. My statement was very loaded. How many years was melee out before Brawl? Was fox ever banned, no. Now How many years has Brawl been out? Wait..not even a year. Anyone expecting meta banned before even a year has to be on something. If you think about it, it's just silly to think meta will be banned so soon, or even ever. I'm not saying this because I main meta, it won't affect me anyway, I'm saying this because it's true.

Well the general consensus is that banning MK now is too premature and people would like to wait 6 months to a year to see if anything will change. Right now MK owns 42% of all winnings and no other character is even close to that number. From a competitive standpoint there really is no reason to not use MK, no bad matchups, no bad stages, no real big weaknesses for others to take advantage of, and over all a lot easier to learn compared to other characters.

Whether or not this is worthy criteria for a ban is still being debated.

Also my statement earlier about picachu being good against meta was also loaded. Picachu has more range than meta, more power, more priority, and enough speed to keep up. Meta does good against big targets, pikachu is small. Even though I'm not a great player, I have played people worse than me who have not even mained picachu and give me a hard time with him. and I'm not alone. I know many people who main meta and tell me picachu is the anti-meta. Enough said?

When we talk about these things we have to assume the characters are being played at their full potential. As you said you're not the greatest player, maybe you just don't know the match up that well or maybe those people aren't as bad as you think, I don't know. As far as Pikachu goes everybody agreed that MK has the advantage but it's not terribly hard for pikachu to win. Like 60:40

They won't ban him, that's just silly.

I don't know man, I've been reading that thread a lot for the past few days and the pro ban crowd have a pretty strong case. Even some tournaments have already banned him.

Character traits, or Skill of the player?

Skill obviously, but what the other guy is getting at is that character traits also plays a significant role too. Depending on which character you choose you'll have an easier time or a harder time getting to the top in a competitive environment. Sure, Captain Falcon can win tournaments but it will take more of an effort on the player's part to do it than somebody who uses Meta Knight. I believe the tier list just reflects that.

He's down there because of his recovery although it only really hurts him when you're dealing with those who actually go off the stage to attack while Link is trying to recover. Otherwise he's cool.

Hence why no decent MK player uses any of his specials. Most skilled players only use his sword combos and grabs, since all of his B moves leave him in fall special or whatever.

That's not completely true, good MKs will use tornado near the opponent and will stay close to the ground to avoid ending lag. Shuttle loop is good KO move that can be comboed into and you can just press A to make him stop gliding.

And to whoever asked how MK was higher than Snake, it's probably because MK can either dodge all of Snake's projectiles or make them go a different way, has a longer reach and has an overall higher priority, and his recovery is a lot better than Snake's.

According to this it's an even match up

Well the beauty of having team attack on is when you find yourself alone both players from the other team can't just rush and overwhelm you without the risk of killing each other. It gives the people a better chance at a comeback.

Although, things like this can happen.

I'm only saying this because there might be someone on the 2 person team who fights like a berserker and might kill BOTH people, instead of just the enemy.

Well seeing this as a team tournament emphasis should be put on team work. Attacking and killing your partner is bad teamwork, and therefore said team does not deserve to win.

And what happens if someone has to go do something, like use the restroom, or grab a snack, or something along those lines, in the middle of a match?

I've seen people put somethings like "wait" or "time out" in their taunts

And finally, I'm bored, so NEW POLL! We've been listing which characters we think are good, so I'm switching it up. Which character is your personal worst? For me, it's Yoshi. I don't know why, but I just can't do anything with him, and he has no third jump.

There are a couple of characters I haven't even touched like Marth and Ike so I'm probably awful with them, but I'll go ahead and say Donkey Kong I really don;t know when to use what which is a shame because I've seen some people play exceptionally well with him.
