Depends on your budget and equipment. To do a pro way you'd mic the kick drum, snare, tom toms using all using individual mic's, with the cymbals also individually mic'd.
Means you can get a crystal clear result but it would give you more channels to mix with, and that may not be the sound you're looking for and it would take more effort.
To do that properly tho would cost at least a thousand pounds, just on the microphones.

Not sure about exactly what you're after. At my uni "pro tools", "cool edit", and last but not least cubase.
Also cakewalk sonar has been recommended by some.
My personal recommendation, just for versatility is cubase. It can do so much more than FL or Reason can do on their own.
And even better, if you get enough cash, get cubase, FL AND Reason, plus some VST for FL and cubase and you'll be reet set up. Cubase is one of my future buys.
