Pretty much, guitars and the effects boxes/plugins are the only thing that can sound like a guitar.
A guitar is the ultimate guitar synthesiser, whilst it probably can be synthesised to a high standard, it'd just be easier and faster to learn guitar unless you're REALLY REALLY good at messing around with synth/samplers.
What you want is to get one of your guitarist mates to record every note on guitar, clean leaves you more room to play but the fx might well give you what you want. have fun!
a bit of sub, a bit of top end, and more eq on the middle might fix that up, if not then yeah you might need a different vocalist.
Possible music jobs i know of, tho i dont know about the pay for most of them.
Studio engineer - depends, if you're junior assistant, you're basically a teaboy n get a pitiful amount, if you're the engineer it depends on the size of the studios, who they work with,
Live sound engineer - again, depends, what band, how good you are, etc,
Producer - top engineer, you tell people how you want it to go, they do the monkey work.
Composer - if in anything major n you dont get screwed on the contract you can make a fair wedge, tho it can take years to get there, old boys network n all that.
Band musician - again, depends, if you get nowhere, but try very hard, you lose money, if you do well and make it, you can make thousands/millions
Studio musician - once you get a good rep, its like a guaranteed wage, long as you're willing to travel, basically means if a solo artist wants a real band sound but cant play the instruments themselives for an album recording, thats what you'll do, if you get a good rep you'll get more work.
Also similar concept as musician for hire amongst live bands, generally only make enough and actually have a job once you've made it as a studio or band engineer, no other way would make sense.
Street busker- if in city centres can make some cash, but you get little bastards nickin money out of your case, so be wary.

With some tweaking with the sound the nn19 heavy guitar patch on reason sounds nearly real, best one i've heard yet, but i've not had a play with the slayer 2 yet, which rumour has it some popular artistes in another genre used. Is it a standalone vst or do you need to get FL to have it.
