Response to: Audio Scouting Posted January 5th, 2013 in Audio

Back in the day when I got scouted I didn't know any of this. I was sitting on my ass for a month and a halve, uploading music every week, when I suddenly got a PM with a list of people willing to scout me. I wanted to accept them all, but after the first one I was immediately scouted. I didn't even know what was going on. I wish there was a way to see who scouted me. I also wonder who the other people were who I didn't accept. A list of people who you scouted is also a good idea.

At 9/11/12 10:57 AM, PsychoGoldfish wrote: when a new breakout artist comes along, one of you guys will have the bragging rights of being the user that scouted them.

You WILL be accountable for who you scout, however. If you invite a bunch of blatant rule breakers, or people simply submitting complete shit, the moderators can not only ban you, they can prune your membership.

If my actions can cost others their membership and others mine, I'd like to have an overview of who scouted me, who I've scouted and who they scout.

Response to: Exceptional 8-bit music program? Posted January 3rd, 2013 in Audio

There are LSDJ cartridges that let you compose music on your gameboy. It has a very user unfriendly interface much like Famitracker. It's quite a hassle to write music this way, and it takes the fun out of it for me, because it takes so much longer than I think is necessary. To others this is actual point of making music on an 8-bit console. Anyways the sound can be very good with Famitracker or LSDJ.

Musagi looks really good. Much more to my liking. I didn't know it. I'll definitely give it a try.

btw this may be a little off topic, but are there programs like Musagi to make snes music? (And I mean more advanced programs than Mario Paint (Composer) and Advanced Mario Sequencer)

As for JoHobo2... Better luck next year. :p Hopefully you weren't disappointed by the way I took the "assignment".

I think JoHobo2 can be happy with the song you made. I know I'm happy with the song you made him. And with the song I got from Sequenced. And with all the other songs as well.

Secret Santa 2013 was a success for me.

Congrats on the album. I could tell it's great without having regrets later, even though I haven't listened to it yet. I'm starting to get to know your music, and I know what you've done before is very good so this must be too. I'll definitely listen to it soon, and let you know what I think. Looking forward to it.

@JJM121 It's just nice when someone makes something specially for you. Jazz is just a very difficult genre to do, especially for people who are used to making electronic music. and Quarl didn't even know you wanted jazz. You can always listen to the other songs. Maybe you'll like some of those.

That's okay. You can do whatever you want with your song now. This is what Stupor said in the other thread.

Going to sleep now, but I want to say this before tomorrow.

I finally got to listen to the song Sequenced made for me. It's very good. this is a working link , so everyone can hear the song.

I also enjoyed the other songs.
The songs I liked best are the one for Sinerider from Zuckyshow. That Lullaby version of Carol of the Bells was just perfect.
The song for Sequenced by Headphoamz. I like the variation in this song. Nice balance of different sounding instruments. Well mixed.
I think the song JoHobo2 made was exactly what DivoFST asked for. It reminded me of Pink Floyd, which is great.
The song of Adam-Bellgard's made by wandschrank had a very nice rythm and powerful sound.
I also liked the ones for ChimeraNoise from Gzus361, for Cocobanana from Sinerider, for Gzus361 by dem0lecule, for dem0lecule from LichLordMusic and the one for JoHobo2 by Jernemies.

The songs I made fade in comparison. But I'm still happy to be part of this.

I don't think camoshark will like the song he got from me. He specifically said "Electronica is completely out of my comfort zone", and that's exactly what I made. That's because I originally wasn't going to make a song for him. I sent in a back-up song in case not everyone would get a song, so I didnâEUTMt know he would receive it. Maybe someone else can make camoshark a nice Jazz or Ethnic song, because I'm not very good at that.

So LichLordMusic is going to make something for EthanAlways and Dem0lecule for LichLordMusic? Excelent! I'm looking forward to it. And to the song for Zuckyshow from DivoFST.

There are a couple of songs I can't download, but only stream:
Krssvr from samulis, samulis from Yoshiii343, Adam-Bellgard from wandschrank, Cocobanana from SineRider, SineRider from Zuckyshow and ofcourse the one by Sequenced.
Is there a way to download these songs? I'd really apreciate it.

Btw whatever happened to Lasse? (Or is that an off topic?)

Happy holidays everyone!

Yeah, that Christmas carol is the best I've heard so far, but I have only heard halve the songs so far.
I like the track you made also very much. Exactly what Cocobanana asked for. Ambient track with guitars with lots of feedback, pads and sound effects and I can hear the love :p

Response to: Reviews Rating Posted December 24th, 2012 in Audio

The rating in the review does not affect the score that's true, but why should it?
Does that mean you should be able to double vote: Both in the review and an ordinary vote?
Should you only be allowed to vote when you leave a review?
Or would there still be an option to vote anonymously?

Personally I like the system as it is. I think voting should always remain anonymously, because anonymous voting is what all fair systems are based on (like democracy).
Some people however like to give and/or receive feedback on the work here. That should be allowed to, because I think it's great if everyone can share their opinion if they want. The stars that come with the reviews are just a nice indication, nothing more.

I think this topic might better fit the zerovoting and exposure thread

Doesn't matter. As long as we know what you mean. Good luck with mixing your album.

Btw I forgot to mention this. You can of course also combine life orchestra with mock-ups. The mock-ups can play the parts that are impossible to play for a life orchestra, and the live orchestra plays the emotional parts that require a human touch. Just like they do with films, with expensive actors for the emotional acting, stunt doubles and CGI for the stunts.

Response to: Discussion-mockup vs live orchestra Posted December 20th, 2012 in Audio

Can a computer outplay a real orchestra? That depends on how you look at it. Something that's fake can never sound more realistic than the real thing. Some VSTs sound extremely realistic, but they can only be "as realistic" at best. In terms of performance a mock up could outplay an orchestra. You will use the human touch of a real orchestra which is a shame, but there are ways to simulate emotional ways of playing as well. (legato, vibration, velocity, tempo, swells, etc) Computer instruments never make any mistakes (out of their own). You have much more control over them. You can endlessly polish up the performance. You don't have to deal with real people, what their skills are, how much time they have. You don't have to hassle with microphone placement. Overall a real orchestra is more expensive that VST instruments.

I don't think I've said much new here. Sorry about that. Just summing things up.

One thing I think is interesting: most people only use VST orchestras as simulation of a real one, while there are things you could only do with a VST.

At 12/20/12 07:16 AM, Step wrote:

:I've made piano solos that are impossible to play without three hands

These are the things I'm talking about. If you want to simulate real instruments, I'd avoid such things, but you can cross the line and go crazy. Make computer music that isn't a simulation of real music, but is good sounding music in its own right.

Another thing

At 12/20/12 04:47 AM, pdbq wrote: I would consider the Digital Mockup analogous to sketching out scenes for a film in preparation for the actual filming.

That's how mock-ups could be used. But you can do so much more. If you plan on recording a song with a real orchestra you'd first have to compose it yes. You can also use a computer to hear how it will sound. But to make a computer orchestra sound realistic takes hours (days even). I wouldn't waste that much time on something no one will ever hear. If you don't plan on recording it with an orchestra however, I would spend much time to make the mock up sound good and realistic. You could say it's a difference between drawing a story board for a life action film on one hand, or are drawing an actual animated film on the other.
