Sure they're different things. That being said, samplers often have presets, you can create loops out samples or with the use of synth presets, you can cut samples from a loop, load it in a sampler, tweak the settings and save it as a preset. Btw, if you're talking about banning the use of presets, you should think about what that means for the use of samples and or loops. Should they be abolished for the same reasons, or do the reasons to keep using samples also aply to the use of synth presets?

While you make a good point, we're not talking about sample libraries.
OP's inquiry is about synth presets.
The sound of orchestral libraries is just as much determined by others as a synth preset is.
And maybe not orchestra, but it's very, oh very so much realistic to get crazy with your sampler, and make instruments out of things you thought implausible.
The more you do yourself the better. But there isn't a strict line between what's your own and when it's borrowed from others. I think as song is never 100% original. It always contains thgings that have been done before.
It's pretty much impossible to record your own orchestra samples. I don't see what's wrong with using a preset string section. Even the best composers on here use East West, Kontakt, Orchestral Tools, Cinesamples, etc. If you'd make that illegal you can delete over 99% of the songs uploaded here.
But even if you play all of the instruments yourself, you still haven't build them. And if you have build them you haven't invented them, or you planted the trees the wood for your instruments came from. Face it. No matter how much of a song you make yourself, you always depend on other people. And then I'm only talking about performance, not the theory behind the music. That's either cultural, human nature and most likely a combination. No single human being can create a culture, let alone (human) nature. I put human in brackets because we know very little about music perception in animals.

Then yes. It's a 10log, so the steps between 10 to 100 to 1000 etc are 1.
It's difficult to put a number on how important sound or music is for a game.
If the sound is so stupid nobody will ever play the game, the game is 100% ruined by the sound.
If sound is mediocre but the gameplay and graphics are great, people will probably care nothing for the sound.
If the sound is great people will enjoy the game more, but only if the rest is good enough. If gameplay sucks no soundtrack will save it.
In other words sound, graphics and gameplay have complex interaction rather than a simple sum of its parts.

Technically it isn't. Only to the human ear, and how we consequently devide our notes. And that's even a simplification of what's really going on.
When the ear says it's right then it is. Mixing by ear is the best way to go I think.
It helps to compare your mix to other songs when you're done with your mix, to see if it's up to par. If not you'll have to make some adaptations.
When I mix drums in a dance, rock or pop song they too are louder than the other instruments. That's the way to go. But it's just the attack that's louder, and mainly or only the attacks of the accents. That's where the pulse and rhythm of your song comes from. The trails of the percussion instruments should be less loud to not interfere with other important instruments.
What I do is I put a compressor with a slow to medium slow attack on the drum track, and a rather low threshold. This is to keep the attacks of the drums loud, but decrease the volume of the trails.
Because your drums are so loud, much of the higher volume peaks in the song come from the drums. You want to get rid of exeptional high peaks because they bring down the total volume of your song. So after the first compressor I often place a second compressor with a fast attack but a high threshold. This compressor won't do anything unless your drum attack peaks are exceptionally high.

Don't force it. Valentines day is just a hallmark ploy.
Most samplers have the option to either loop or not loop. I'm only used to Reason. I know in the NN-XT sampler in reason you can set the play mode to loop or not loop. You can set the loop start and end time. The buttons for this are right underneath the screen that shows the samples. This should be possible for almost every sampler in every program. Look it up in the manual I'd say. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hmm yes. Me too. And I think it would in fact represent Envy on a subconsious level. I could never have come up with that. If I want to create something original, I record someone in a wheelchair taking the cargo elevator of the ikea through the roof. I conclude it's a beautiful day. Lots of new genres are born.

But your song for this contest was already featured on the front page before this was decided so this changes nothing for you. (or am I mistaken?)

Someone high up, make it happen!
Yeah I hope so. If someone starts a competition with that theme, maybe we'll end up with enough songs to make it a genre. I'm sure to get some high ranking in that competition :p Unless I have to host it myself. But then I'll just enter under my pseudonym Gaybi Van Dyke.

Februari the fifth will the results be posted. So that's well before your newgrounds fast.

Yeah, but when you're done you have 10 songs at once.

Hehe I think not. The other submissions are very good. Mine is just different, so it's a nice contribution. I'm not even sure it's the best song I've ever made as we were supposed to. I have put my all in it though. I wonder how Bosa is going to compare all these different styles.
Some great entries. I don't think I can top that, but I still want to post something.
I have a question though. It says your submission must be âEUoespecifically designed for this contestâEU. I planned to create something for this contest. Yesterday I finished a song with this purpose in mind. At the moment I'm also creating music for a game that's under development. I showed the song to one in charge of the game project, and he said he'd like to use it, but that it's okay if I use it as an entry for the contest as well.
So I'm a bit torn now. Does this still count as made specifically for the contest? Is it allowed to use a song for something else in the future when it is submitted to this contest?
At 1/28/13 05:27 PM, zombiefy1 wrote: How many scouts does an audio submission need before you can see it on the audio portal?
None. Audio submissions themselves can't be scouted, It's the artis who has to be scouted, and consequently accept the scout (only once). After that all of the scouted artist's songs will be displayed in the audio portal.
At 1/28/13 05:35 PM, DoxOfficial wrote: i would really love to start scouting people.. but i'm scared to because i wouldn't want to scout someone for the one track they had, and then they make another one later on that sucks and i get the blame for it o.o
Only moderators can see who scouted who. Users can't, so you'll get neither credit nor blame for anything. The only way a scout could bite you in the ass is when someone you've scouted violate the regulations, not because they make bad songs.

Unfortunately I'm not good at jazz, but you can use any of the songs I've uploaded on Newgrounds, or ask me to make something new in a similar style.
