I don't like the idea of anyone having a bigger penis than I do. But every man or woman may meet his or her match.

Or if i'd have points deducted. If so I guess I'll start from scratch.
Hard to say if we can't hear the song. Every song sounds at least somewhat like another. Though some are blatant rip-offs. Be sure yours is more like the former. I don't think it matters if the chord progression is the same. Every good chord scheme has been used already (I think), so you can't get around that. You have to make the melody different. In any case it mustn't be the same, and if possible it should not remind (others) of the "original" melody. Can be difficult to make a different melody that's just as good, especially when the other sticks in your head, but there should be many different melodies possible with one chord progression. Try to make the rhythm or at least the instrumentation different (or settings in case of 8-bit). Probably you shouldn't have mentioned your song sounded like an older one. Now people are going to pay more attention.
I once made a song for a retro platform game based on a Sonic the Hedgehog song. It ended up a different song, but I was still afraid people would say I copied Sonic. In the end nobody mentioned Sonic. They all thought I copied Megaman...

Great! Actually I meant the results for the competition. It was a bit confusing of me to put that question in the same post as the response to you. Sorry about that. But I'm also interested in your work, so it all works out. But you did know that the contest ended on the 24th of February didn't you? Anyway it's nice you make something. Whether it's for a competition or not.
No joke, I traded my pair of shoes for an ol Korg M1. FUN AS SHIT. I accidentally broke the mod wheel though and I'm still drunkenly mad about it.
I'd trade my shoes for a Korg M1 with all 61 keys broken. An M1 module is still 10 times as expensive as the shoes I'm currently wearing.
Hardware would be extremely extensive to completely replace your software. All the software I load in my DAW wouldn't even fit in my room. I'm not even talking about the costs. For the common musician it's much more realistic to use a DAW in combination with whatever hardware you need and have the money for. I just have a computer with a DAW an audio interface, and some instruments plugged in.
The mindset is a little narrow on this topic.
When we say 8-bit music, we automatically think about music produced by an 8-bit video game console (because that's what's meant most of the time). There are however other 8-bit musical instruments not intended for video games. You could call music made with those instruments also 8-bit music.
Btw, did you know that even though the snes was a 16-bit console, the audio cpu had an 8-bit core? So you could call snes music 8-bit as well.
Not trying to make it overly complicated. I think it's relatively clear what's allowed in this competiton. Just saying.
Ps, I'm working on some songs right now of which I want to use one for the competition. But I'm not sure if they qualify. Some remind of 8-bit songs, and are in a sense 8-bit. Others are made with 8-bit synths but don't sound like "gameboy music".

There also are genreless contests like Bosa's Dreams of Splendor contest a while ago. Even then you get complaints like "The songs are too hard to compare this way." and "Judging is too subjective.". ThatâEUTMs why most other contests have more rules.
Contests always need rules, else they aren't contests. A completely themeless contest doesn't exist in my opinion. If you don't want to be limited by the rules of a contest you shouldn't partake and just submit to the portal. Plenty room for innovation there. With all the votes, comments and rankings it's kind of a contest anyway.
Regardless of my feelings on the matter, it's very honorable of Brokendec,k and whoever else runs these contests
It is. Nice of you to acknowledge that. Btw you can always organize your own contests if you notice any things that could be improved upon and show us how it's done.
I think I will partake. Been meaning to make more 8-bit music for a long time.

Nice you feel that way. I feel the same.
Made me think about all the things I'm doing wrong. Like looking into a mirror.
Looking in the mirror is something you do wrong? :p
Just kidding. You meant itâEUTMs like IâEUTMm holding up a mirror by writing this, and you recognize some of your own limitations. I don't think many of the people who need to read this do, and when they do, they won't have a clue what they do wrong. It's very brave to admit your own mistakes, and it's the first and most important thing in improving yourself. A lot of things that I've listed here I do wrong myself. In that sense I'm a little hypocrite. But it doesn't mean I'm not allowed to say it, because it's still things others should think about. I should try to improve myself as well of course. Like communicate more even if I don't always have much or good news.

Sometimes we get inspiration visually. I will occasionally put on a movie with awesome visuals, and I will loop it on mute. Mess around and try to write something that fits the visuals. It definitely makes for a greater project as a whole in the end.
I agree. Musicians often translate images to sound. That's (part) of our work as composer right? I myself love concept art, whether it's for a project IâEUTMm working on, or just something I'm a fan of. Also I like demos or rough edits. Directors are very hesitant to show those to me, because "It isn't finished" and "You'll get the wrong impression", but I can see past all those things. I know it will get better, but I want to see progress. I want to know what IâEUTMm doing it for, need some inspiration, and know I'm not the only one working here. Besides. I myself also constantly send work in progress, hoping to get some feedback.

Came across this site various times when I was searching the internet for things. It seemed like a nice community. I paid a little more attention to it when I found out about the web series TOME by Kirbopher. That showed me a little more about the creative possibilities of the site. I knew I had to keep it in mind for when I was going to do my web series. Which still isn't there btw, because animation takes me too long. It was only until VaeViktuz let me know on my youtube channel, that my video game music covers would do well on Newgrounds, that I signed up.
When I read the rules it said it was advised to submit work that was 100% your own, so that was what I did until I got scouted. After that I also submitted some of the aforementioned covers, but I'm glad original songs get as much if not more recognition here as covers. Unlike on youtube.
The reasons why I signed up and posted music was to share what I've made, so it has more reason to do it. A fan base sounds good. I sure wish a lot of people will get to hear and like what I do.
The thought of having other people use my work is quite appealing. I like to help out others by letting them use my music, or by making music specifically for them. Unfortunately 80% of the time I only find out later people used my songs. I wished they let me know more.
There were a couple of composers I knew (off) here before I signed up. FantomenK, NemesisTheory, Kubi, Satyre and the forementioned VaeViktuz, who has been idle for the last months probably to let his family come First.
After I signed up I got know a number of just as great musicians who were very nice to me: wandschrank, dem0lecule, Elitistinen, ET16, Lowbit, Sequenced, TheyCallMeCaudex, Mattashi, MetalRenard, Jernemies, Car77, Stupor and of course Bosa himself.
I've gotten to know the community quite a bit since I've signed up. It's much nicer than I expected. A lot of cool stuff going on here. I like the competitions and events. Makes you much more involved with the people on this site.
Cheers to everyone here!

I think that generally the sounds would come out much better if I wasn't trying to be someone else's song.
Exactly. Couldn't have said it better.

Also, its not that it is definitely a mandolin. Its just that you can recreate the sound with some kind of plucked instrument. I recreated a similar sound with a plucked instrument, xylophone and flute synth. Although when I responded I was just going from memory.
A bright piano preset is easier. But a mandolin, xylophone and flute synth sounds more original. Except the you had already done that.
At 3/1/13 06:18 PM, The-iMortal wrote: T-RackS has a soft clipper.
Yeah, but I don't think this has been done with a purely soft-clipping effect, but that it's the result of a distortion effect. You always get soft or hard clipping when you apply distortion.
The sound you mean is some type of synthetically produce voice/choir sound, with some breath to it. Sounds like a simple Halo Pad preset to me. All GM keyboards have this kind of sound. Could be another type of preset, depending on the brand and serial number of the keyboard. Or a Halo Pad layered with a Choir. Just browse through the choir section of a GM keyboard, and youâEUTMll find something like it.
There are definitely no mandolin nor xylophone samples in this song. I donâEUTMt even know what frootza means by this. Probably the Bright Piano (in the left speaker), which is also a preset on even the cheapest MIDI keyboards.
ThereâEUTMs also a synth sequence, which sounds like a saw wave, distorted and with a phaser.
The base is also a saw wave, but more detuned, probably also distorted.
And of course the drums. Sounds like a very standard drum computer, (Roland TR-808?) with effects.
Clearly some soft clipping. There are various ways to achieve this, so I don't know how exactly it was done here. Probably some type of overdrive. Probably tube. Maybe tape. Something else.

This thread should never die anyway, so thanks for bumping it. It would be difficult to post a demo. The library is huge. I'd say only about 10-20% is useful for me, and I tweak the settings as much as I can, to make it work. So it sounds different for anyone, and it's to big to capture in a demo. Just download it, it's free and play around with it to see what you can use.
