Wel, the one that gives you the highest position obviously. How simple can it be?
First I look at what purpose the song has, or what purpose I give it. What theme, what mood it has to evoke, etc. Then something just comes to mind. If not I work very methodical until inspiration starts to kick in. First what key, then rhythm, after that what structure the song has, then chord progression, then melody, instruments, riffs, counter melodies, harmony melodies, sound fx and whatever more makes a song a song. At the end when I think it's good enough I fine tune the mix. Enhance it a little or a lot in the mastering phase.
I have some suggestions for subdivisions of Miscellaneous:
-Common genre yet not available on NG
-Mixture of several different genres
-Completely original music, of a genre that doesn't exist yet, but will probably become extremely popular in the near future and years to come (Title of this genre may be a tad long)
-Impossible to define
-This isn't music at all
In short
-Unavailable
-Fusion
-Postmodern
-Undefinable
-Noise
You can use any of the tracks on my newgrounds profile as well. I think it's quite diverse music on there. Good luck with your channel.
Good album man. I can hear why you have been so busy. Must've been difficult to mix, with so many instruments and all of the reverb. You made the instruments sound very full. My brother likes this kind of music a lot. I think he'll appreciate this as well. I'll send him the link.
You make great samples. I don't think I will use them, but I enjoyed listening to them.

I don't know. Things like this usually are scams. Anyway there's a thread dedicated to this topic. You can ask around there.
This is some pretty cool audio software/app for the I pad
http://www.rebirthapp.com/rebirth-for-ipad/
You can't record any external things with it, but you can make some cool music. It's 2 identical bassline synth sequencers (Roland TB-303), and two different drum computers (Roland TR-808 and TR-909). Great sound. Combine it with a DAW on a lap/desktop, to enhance the sound, and add additional instruments, effects, proper mixing and it's a pretty nice tool.

I think I can feel you lurking sometimes. When I'm on a forum. Reading the messages. Typing my responses. Then there's this cold tingle up my spine. I stop typing. There's a sudden chill as if someone left a door open. I get goose bumps, and a growing sensation there's someone behind me. First I'm like "Ah that's not possible, I'm completely alone here." Still I'm unable to type. The feeling gets stronger. Until it becomes unbearable and I'm convinced there's someone's watching. I jerk around abruptly, but. No one there. I look around to make sure, but there's nobody. Still the presence lingers. Then I realize it comes from my computer. And I know it's Back-From-Purgatory . Lurking. I return to the seat in front of my computer, and quickly delete the piece of mind I intended to give that douchebag who thought he was smarter than me. I remove that demotivational poster that took me halve an hour to photoshop a horses ass to Justin Biebers face (and still wouldn't look any different). I turn of my computer, and go to bed. From my blank monitor I can still see Back-From-Purgatory nodding "Yeah that's right. You walk away.". Then I lie there. Unable to sleep. Yet so gratefull I didn't post that message.
I don't think this OP is against the rules since you don't actually link to your own songs. But perhaps the best place to ask your questions is in the "Sound Design Discussion/Share" thread.

I'll give you some advice here though. Your setup isn't too bad for what you have, but there are a few things you can improve (with some money). First of all your keyboard isn't of too high audio quality as far as I can tell. The easiest and probably best way for you is to use the sound of a software/vst piano. They can be quite cheap for the sound you get, compared to the hardware keyboard you already have. You can open your software piano in a DAW (digital audio workstation). You can connect most keyboards to your computer using a usb or firewire cable, so you can control your software piano with your hardware keyboard. So play the song on your keyboard as usual, but record the midi instead of the actual audio. After you've recorded you can make any changes to your performance you want, by changing the notes in your DAW. In here you can add reverb as well. There are more exquisite kinds of reverb then those available in Audacity. You can get some good sounding reverb plugins if you're wiling to spend the money. Aside from reverb, you can use any other effect to enhance the sound of your performance. Think about EQ, compression, limiter. Even some more unusual effects like echo, chorus, phaser, distortion, anything you want. Just experiment a little. In your DAW you can tweak the notes and effects as long as you want. When you're satisfied, export it as an audio file.
If you're really fixated on recording the sound of your keyboard there are a few other things you can do to improve.
1rst is get a keyboard with a better sound. (But like I said. Hardware keyboards/pianos are much more expensive for the sound that you get than software)
2nd I don't know what kind of AD converter your computer has, and what type of audio input connection. But if your AD converter isn't optimal, and your input is just a stereo mini jack, I'd suggest you get a proper audio interface. This will decrease fuzz, noise, distortion, clicks, etc, and increase the bit and sample rate, so the overall quality.
Like with a software piano, I suggest you use the same mixing and mastering techniques and effects, so you'll need some good programs for that. Probably something more advanced than Audacity, if you have the money to spare.
Instead of a software piano, or a hardware electric piano/keyboard, it's also an option to record a live grand. This will be the most difficult and expensive solution, but will also give best sound. You'd need a quiet recording space, silent and high quality recording system, good microphones, and you'd need to know how and where to place them. Post production is the same as mentioned before, but think about how you go about your production, as you place the microphones.
Good luck.

I don't think that's a good idea. There weren't any rules against it previously, so there may already be a lot of people working on covers from songs by the judges.
At 4/8/13 08:22 AM, Buoy wrote: We can just get a backup judge or something for those cases.
That would be a better solution I think. Though that means not all submissions are judged by the same people, so aren't judged equally. Then again, each song is judged by at least 3 out of 4 of the same judges, so it should not make too much of a difference.
Sounds like it could be a fun competition. I've been making arrangements for several years myself. I've done the entire Lufia II soundtrack, and am working on Illusion of Gaia. Also lots of side things. Google them if you want. I'd be willing to participate. Like many have said, it isn't easy to organize a contest (though I've never organized nor helped out in a Newgrounds contest, so don't take my word for it). If you're going to do this, don't do it alone. Even the most experienced contest organizers ask for multiple judges. Keeps things more objective. The only part I don't get is where people think it's a bad thing when an organizer hasn't got music on his/her page. Why should someone's contest organizing/judging qualities be based on his/her own music skills? At a fencing tournaments I frequented there was a judge with no arms. He was a pretty lousy fencer, but not too bad of a judge though.

A cover of FantomenK's awesome song The Massacre.
Here is my entry:

The massacre (chipsounds) by FantomenkA video game sounding tune
- Score
- 4.51 / 5.00
- Type
- Song
- Genre
- Video Game
- Popularity

I wanted to make an orchestral cover, or piano rendition, but in practice it turned out the melody and chords etc don't really lend themselves for anything other than dance. Also I liked the chiptune like sound of the original, so I tried to do something like that as well. Even though I stay in the same genre the same mood and even use some similar sounds, I think it's different enough. Whether it's actually good is for you to decide.
@ZipZipper where's your moonface?

Heh. That's just funny.
I get the same when I'm walking. Which can be annoying. Try walking for 5 km with a 5/4 metre with accent shift stuck in your head.

You may use what you have
The best thing is when you have a song in your head, and you just have to write it down. But that's only for when you actually have inspiration.
To me when I don't have any idea for a song at all the best way to get it done is to force limitations on myself. If I have too many options, I just don't know where to begin.
You can create a song with no inspiration at all, by going about very methodically. Find a theme and a purpose for your song. Then think what key would fit with that. What metre. Then What song structure. After that chord progression, Rhythm. All the basic things. Think of some things that have not been done to often before, to create some sense of originality. When you got all that make a nice accompanying music with it. Now it's time for the melody. Put some notes that fit the chord scheme on the accents. You can increase tension by using some notes that don't actually fit with the chords. Start a segment of your song out with notes that fit the chords. Gradually use notes that fit less and less. In the end dissolve the tension by ending on a note that sounds consonant again so you get a nice arc. Now put some softer notes in between the accent notes, that move away or towards the accent notes in terms of both pitch and velocity, so you get some nice waves in you melody.
Now you've created a song needing no inspiration at all. Of course you can change it at any time into something more interesting, funky or whatever. If along the line your inspiration picks up again, and some music starts to form in your head; go for it. In fact that part's probably necessary for any good music production.
The trick at that point is to change everything you need again. For example, if you suddenly think of a catchy melody or bass riff, you may find out the chords and/ or the the rhythm don't (completely) fit. You can do two things: Change the chords and rhythm to the melody or bass riff. Or if you have to go too much out of your way, leave the song for now, and create a completely new one with your new found inspiration, and come back to the initial song when it's done.
The risk is you get too many unfinished projects like this. You can always revisit older projects. Take the nice parts of it. Put them on good parts of another song. And like some sort of doctor Frankenstein, create a monster.

Glad you explained the old system to me. Glad it's gone by the sound of it. So I got it right after all when I thought the "approve" system was replaced by the "scouting" system. There's a lot of outdated or simply incorrect information about the Newgrounds rules when you try to look it up. Even some of the things you read on Newgrounds itself seem to stem from older systems sometimes.
