I think my way of defining successful musician is how one makes a difference in music and its community.
Just my $0.02. Also how I define Hans Zimmer or John Willams' successes.
Rain Man was not Zimmer's first score. Just his first Hollywood film score. He made scores for tens of films and tv series before that. Like "Success Is the Best Revenge" in 1984, that got nominated for the Cannes Film Festival. Also Rain Man was from 1988. Earlier successful films like Clockwork Orange (1971), Blade Runner (1982) and Tron (1982), already combine classical/orchestral music with electronic. It was well established before Rain Man or Hans Zimmer came along. And the Rain Man soundtrack itself was inspired by pop music from the 50s and 60s.
I agree making a difference is a good way to define success. Good one. Zimmer and Williams are an inspiration to many musicians, and they determine the sound of their time. But I think great musicians like them are inspired by lesser known musicians in turn. I heard the Beatles were inspired by a lot of unknown rock and roll bands and folk singers, and combined that to make their own sound that defined rock. Unfortunately we will never know most of the unknown musicians that inspired the great ones, but in a sense they were successful because they too helped determine the sound of the future.

And no, you can't vote on the mock submission, sorry.
31st is fine by me. Too bad we can't vote on the mock submission haha.
Btw you haven't downloaded my submission I see. You did get it right? Tell me if the link didn't work or whatever.

That's what everyone keeps saying. It's because of Hans Zimmer composers nowadays blend orchestral with electronic instruments, but I don't think that's true. In the 80s Hans Zimmer wasn't that well known, and other musicians who were more influential at the time, like Vangelis and Jerry Goldsmith already did that. I think the combination of electronic and orchestral instruments in modern film scores is more of an 80s revival thing. The people calling the shots in the film industry nowadays grew up in the 80s, so they just make what they're taught to like. I think every time people reproduce something that was hip 20 to 30 years ago. In the 60s people were already making classical music on moog synths. For example Wendy Carlos the composer of A Colckwork Orange, The Shining and Tron (The films I name are from after the 60s, but she started in the 60s). So perhaps the 80s film music in turn was a revival of the 60s. These things are always a rather complex mesh. What influenced what. In any case, I don't think Hans Zimmer is as influential as you think.
True. Giving up entirely is the worst. Lots of remakes nowadays. Also a lot of novel and comic book adaptations. I never saw the point of that. Makes me think; If the amount of effort and time spent on adaptations is used for a new stories instead, wouldn't the world be a whole lot richer? Then again if you compare Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch to his adaptation of Watchmen, you can see how original stories aren't always as good as adaptations (imo). I think the everyday-person demographic is the most influential because in the art industry they make things that will sell. You can question if it's still art that way. I don't think you can call big budget Hollywood films art anymore. There's no room to express personal feelings, because there are too many people working on the same project, and they all want to make something according to the rules in order to make it sell, so they can pay back that big budget to the funders.

Seems to be a reflection on the film industry at the moment as well hahaha, or just art in general. Too bad the boring, normal, everyday-person demographic is the largest and most influential one. But I guess one of the keys to being an unsuccessful musician would be to give up entirely.
Only work on projects with 12 year old kids who say they will make awesome games that you have to to make 50 new songs for them per game that you aren't allowed to post or use for anything else and then they never finish the games and never let you hear from them again... True story.
On youtube my midi rips get far more attention then my original work. Whenever I post a song made by myself someone says "this reminds me of [insert title of random video game song that has nothing to do with my song] but it's not as good" or "Are you still going to make video game remixes? Otherwise I will unsubscribe".
There are also two songs by me on that site as it turns out. Oh well, at least they put the artist's name in it. I've seen worse.

I can guess whose submission the pending analysis is. When can we vote? Upcoming weekend? I'll vote the mock submission.

I was googling my name you know, trying to find my "stolen" and uncredited music.
I found this. Is anyone familiar with this site?
I know for certain that I didn't upload anything on that site, neither I gave a permission to anyone to do so.
Not a clue. There are a lot of sites like that. Many are barely legal. I don't think there's much you can do about it. It's especially the famous musicians whose music pops up everywhere illegally shared through torrents. The lesser know music appears as downloadable ring tones. I don't think googeling your name helps to find un-credited use. Whenever I come across my own songs that people use without permission it's by total (or partial) accident. I always send them an e-mail if they could credit me, but never get anything back. They just don't care. Since there isn't much to do about it neither do I. But what still pisses me off is when some punk uploads my music and pretends it's his/her own.
ps If you like the songs, I can make alterations. Make it loop, make it longer, or whatever you want.
Looks like it will be a cool game. Looking forward to it.
You can use any of my songs if you like:
Good luck with finishing the game.
You could post a request in the animation or collaboration forum.

I knew you were going to quote that composition.
I heard it before. Or rather I didn't...
You still need an instrument to not play this.
They say the best actors are the ones that can do nothing, in an interesting way. Would the same go for musicians?
Whenever you have an annoying song in your head and you can't get it out, think about this one.
Here's me talking in my ordinary voice. You may even catch a glimpse of what I look like. Be warned it's sort of an advertisement to my youtube channel though.

I'll probably have to sign up for it.
No, you could use any data sharing site you want, as long as only the the contest organizers can see it. Later all songs will be uploaded one site (possibly soundcloud) by the organizers, but with neutral titles, so no one will know which song is made by who. Every participant will get 3 days to vote on one track they like. That will determine who wins. At least that's how I understood it.
I know what four instruments to use!
One of those nifty organs with multiple claviers and foot pedals:

Also this thing, whatever it is:

And of course my personal favourite; an orchestrion:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y62nTNLK3xM
And then I'll have one instrument left to choose from... Does a cd player count as one instrument? Or a computer? They say that a good orchestra plays as one, so if I use a good orchestra it counts as one person playing one instrument right?
Naturally I'll have all of the four people operating the instruments sing as well.
It will be grand!
If you buy a keyboard like that you don't get a lot of sound quality for the price. Software instruments like vst's are the cheapest for what you get. A keyboard can still be useful to practice. You can just start playing away without needing to plug it in. It can help you improve your playing skills, or let you come up with songs faster. It's also nice you have all of the GM and XG voices at once. The standard midi voices. So you know you won't miss out on any commonly used sounds. You can even record your keyboard with your computer (though I think you'd need an audio interface) if you want that clean yamaha sound. You have far less control over the sound than when you use a DAW, but yamaha has a nice warm sound with frequencies over the entire spectrum, so it's quite versatile for EQ and effects. The only problem is you can't get it to sound dirty or organic. If you really go for a keyboard with good sound you should go for PSR 950 or even a Tyros 4. The mega- and super articulation voices sound very good and realistic. But if you have that kind of money to spend, you'd better use it on software.
Why are there descriptions of phase 2 and 3, when you shouldn't start earlier than 2 weeks in advance? Will the themes change?

Two weeks ago I sent RicePirate a mail if he wanted to do a voice for me, but he hasn't answered yet. Ten days ago Odell Atkinson mailed me this: "Rice won't respond for a while. He's in Philadelphia, or so he told me.". I don't know if he's still in Philadelphia but he might be. I don't know him in person (and he most likely has never heard of me).

If anyone whines it's against the law, just quote Judge Dredd: "I AM THE LAW!!!". They can't object to that.
