You need to look at it from the studio's point of view, if they are any good then they will be busy working on projects, and they won't have time to waste training a novice animation when they might not pick it up quickly or may even not be very good.

By making them a showreel it shows you are serious, and have a passion for being an animator, it also shows them where your skill level is at. By doing work experience anywhere you're basically saying 'I want to peruse this as a job', so you need to be sure that's what you want to do, if you've never seriously animated before how do you know you really want it?

I've just been accepted to do some work experience in a studio that makes Disney / Pixar content, and it took me about 15 months of freelancing and a good few years playing with flash to get to this stage :)

thanks for the answer.
yeah, i begin to realize that it's maybe not as easy as i expected it to be :)
in fact i never did real animations. i did everything kinda apart from each other, i wrote small stories, tried to learn anatomy and drawing and sketched some characterdesigns, but sadly i never got to put it all together and make it an animation... that's why i really lack experience, i never did anything "serious" . But i'm about to start doing that now, so hopefully it doesn't take me too long to catch up.

It's just that i really didn't expect that getting a work experience is almost as hard as getting a place to study animation o.O if not even harder in some cases

animation internship, help! Posted 1 month ago in Animation

sooo i'm currently looking for an internship at an animation studio. but until now i haven't been successful... so i'd be very grateful for any tip i can get, or even if you just told me about your experience.
I tried already one year ago, when I was still going to school, but apparently no studio is interested in a pupil with only 4 weeks of holidays. So I tried again this year and the only answer I got until now, is that I could send a demo reel for rigging or composition and it would be cool if i had working experience or studied.
So I feel kinda lost at the moment, because i thought for an internship you would need a basic understanding of animation and maybe know the programmes a little. but i never thought i had to be an experienced animator (with demo reel!).

please help me! because i don't know if i even stand a chance with my basic knowledge about animation. i have some small tests lying around, more (skillful) than what i posted to NG (yet), but by far not enough for a demo reel. and i don't know anything about rigging or composition. i wanted to be an 2d animator...

Response to: Dumbass at my school expelled Posted November 15th, 2014 in General

at highschool there was this guy who was kinda famous with the ladies n stuff, not too much of an asshole, but enough to make every other undecided teenage boy in my class wanting to be just like him. apparently one of our teachers started targeting him, turning everything against him. which was easy because he was always a little douchey. so in the end she put him under a lot of pressure and he switched school. my class (especially the boys) got a lot more pleasant afterwards.

i don't regret that he left, school got a lot more fun without him, it's just
this teacher used to say that "we are an elite school" and looking back, most of my classmates had this typical middle-class family. i wonder what life would have been like, if the educational system wouldn't be so selective (and less fckng racist)

maybe you should think about not letting people skip so often. 2 times might be okay, there are always unexpected things to happen, but 5 chances are just too generous if you want to keep this moving. and if this would move a little faster, the people still being part of it should be a little more motivated, than after waiting months to start animating.
(I just hope this idea doesn't backfire on me ;D )

I dont do adopts as its kinda strange for me to sell someone a character. Like its the best part about OC. When you :create one yourself. Well seems like commisions here might be waste of time on DA since so far everyone tries either to :tell me my stuff sucks or its worth so little its not even worth time. Honestly its more worth then to jsut go on streets :begging for money XD

agree on the last part. but if you want to make a living with your art you either need a plus in quantity or quality. Your stuff doesn't suck at all. It's just that you wont get much more than a little pocket money if you dont want to invest alot more time.

or have a brilliant idea for a perfect characterdesign or storyline

I'd ask you the same. ause, apparently you think basic met is cheaper thn ramen, or mc and cheese. Too bad you're way off. 4 servings of chicken costs $8-9. Four servings of round beef (the heapest beef) costs $6. Pork comes in the cheapest at about $4 for four servings. Go anywhere beyond that and you're liable to pay well over $10 just for the meat.

Vegetables, for the most part are cheap, but they have a pathetically short shelf life. A head of lettuce is only really good for about 3 days. Carrots are the lognest at about a week. Fruit can last longer, but the cheapest fruit often runs at 4-5 times the cost, per tare weight, of vegetables.

Now, take a peek at the premade meals. Mac and cheese can run as cheap is $.25 per serving, meaning you can make 4 meals for four people for the price of 1 meal for four of pork. Ramen runs at even cheaper, coming down to in some cases less than $.10 per serving. Frozen pizza, even being much more expensive than those two, comes in at around 1-2 dollars per serving. A whole meal for the price of a component of a helthy meal.

Need I go on, or would you like to have another bite of your foot?

Trust me, having both been medically unable to work and my diet extrmely restricted (ruling out most, if not all the quick stuff at the gorcery store) I have spent a significant amount of time and effort trying to lower the costs of eating healthy.

actually, let's make a Venn diagram about the correlation of time, health and money and the resulting kind of food.
Time is irrelevant, because no one is saying that poor people don't have time to make food. It is true you pay extra for the expedience of fast food, but then again, you pay that for any food made for you. If a prson has the time to heat up a frozen pizza (roughly 30 minutes) they have time to make a healthy meal.

Also, when it comes down to it, healthy foods served quickly cost significantly more than the unhealthy foods. A salad at McDonalds or BK runs about $4. You can get two burgers and two sides of fries for that.

Okay, good luck feeding on ramen... or good old healthy burgers.
I'm sorry though, the way i wrote my first post is indeed kinda offensive, so i'll try being more reasonable with this one.
classic dinner: bread with spread costs about 50ct
Soup. You don't need to be a chef for that, but depending on what you put in, that makes between 10ct-1$ per meal. and if you cook a little more than needed, you can freeze it for later use.
spaghetti: max. 50ct per portion
potato pancakes, "arme ritter", salad & bread, fried eggplant, selfmade pizza (tastes ALOT better than bought!), casserole etc etc.
I'm a not a great cook, but the more I try, the less I like fast food (only if i'm hella buisy or tired... or lazy)

Well, that's largely a myth. Fast food is nowhere near the cheapest food out there. Going for processed nd boxed meals at the grocery store is by far the cheapest. You could eat for a week on what it would cost to eat BK for one day.

The truth in the myth is that healthy food is expensive. Sure, you can load up on mac and cheese, frozen pizza, raman, and alike for cheaper than fast food, but it's really difficult to get healthy food for less than fast food costs.
