Blazblue - DLC
Dead or Alive- hasn't made a console game in years
Dragonball Z- better back in the day
Marvel vs. Capcom- rips you off, but good
Mortal Kombat- Awesome
Soulcalibur- meh
Street Fighter-see MVC
Tekken- yeah
The King of Fighters- dlc
Virtua Fighters- haven't made a game in years.
Super Smash- Great
etc.

All of these are highly successful and multi-million copy selling franchises. A lot of these made a come back this generation if anything.
Most of which haven't made a best seller in years. Few fighters come out a year. Only street fighter, MVC and MK came out this year.

This is incredibly untrue.

Marvel V.S. Capcom 3 (2011) ~1.37 million units sold (Has another iteration in works)
Mortal Kombat (2011) ~3.00 million units sold (Has another iteration in works)
Soulcalibur IV (2008) ~2.3 million units sold (Has another iteration in works)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) ~9.48 million units sold (More than likely will be sequel)
Street Fighter IV (2009) Street Fighter IV has sold 3.1 million units and Super Street Fighter IV has sold 1.6 million units,[13] while Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition has sold an additional 1 million copies as of April 2011

I could go on and on and on. They are still alive and well.

This is a pretty interesting thread, I like how it is set up too ;)

I know Game Informer use to do pretty much the same series in the back of each issue, they might sitll do it too. It's good to put nostalgia into perspective sometimes and realize that not all games from "back then" were as amazing as you think. And that not all games "now days" are trash and don't stand up to the classics.

Response to: Idea about Microsoft Posted September 15th, 2011 in Video Games

It's something people debate about a lot. Technically Microsoft could cos on by with just having major 3rd party support and still sell a lot of consoles. The only problem is the "core" or "traditional" gamer would like to see more first party IPs. Not only that but they don't want the same ones every year, they look forward to new and original ones.

I think Microsoft really should develop more internal IPs even if it isn't crucial for their sales. It would make the core audience happy and will build a solid library.

You're making an incredibly moot point. It doesn't matter that there old console works fine, what matters is that there new, more technologically advanced console works like shit.
Also you're a prick.

I'm just pointing out you're being dramatic in your topic. You say things like "Why can't Microsoft do things right" and "Why Can't Microsoft make things work the way they're supposed to" but turn right back around and talk about how great the hardware for the original Xbox is.

Yes Microsoft heavily rushed the production of the Xbox 360 and it took them years to get it right, some still argue that they still haven't. But clearly Microsoft is capable of making a sturdy product and have. You're exaggerating.

And love ya too, babe.

Not at all. You couldn't be more wrong.

The game is still owned and published by the same publisher, Microsoft. The studio producing it is made up of a few ex-Bungie members like Frank O' Connor. This studio is heavily affiliated with the Halo franchise. It isn't an instance where a major franchise is handed off to some 3rd party studio to continue. You can check out Naughty Dog if you're into that.

At 8/24/11 10:25 PM, RightWingGamer wrote: Star Wars made prequels. Yes, they mostly sucked, but they would have been much worse had they been sequels. And don't give me that stuff about the "Expanded Universe". I'm well familiar with the stories of Kyle Katarn, the Yuuzhan Vong, Han & Leia, and so forth, and NONE OF IT is substantial enough to sustain an entire trilogy. Especially since the 6 movies they made were mostly about Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker. As far as I'm aware, only one of those characters is even alive after the saga.

I know I'm rambling, but the point is that Return of the Jedi and Halo 3 are alot alike in that they were both made to end their respective story arcs. Then there's the fact that Halo's story was never really great in the first place, so it makes even less sense than a Star Wars 7.

You're slightly correct. You have to realize that video games aren't in the same league as movies. I'm not saying one is superior to the other, they're just held to different standards and you can get away with doing certain things in one that you can't in the other.

This new trilogy of games is not a spin off, it is the main and core list of characters and settings as the original Halo. The universe is expansive like Star Wars but can get away with making quality prequels and sequels because it is a video game. If you take a look at a video game series like Metal Gear Solid and Zelda they have done a similar thing. There are prequels, sequels, parallel universes, etc. This can all be accomplished because they're video games. All are top notch video game franchises. Not to mention you have a pretty safe bet that when a new iteration of the series comes out it is going to be a quality title. Excluding a small handful of titles that shouldn't be mentioned. I'm looking at you CDI.

So to wrap things up when I said Halo was like Star Wars I meant that there is so much going on in this universe and there is so much to explore. They will be fine with continuing the universe of Halo and considering you yourself said the original Halo story wasn't so great, perhaps this is their chance to capture your interest with a new story. Maybe not.

Response to: The Ng 'halo 4' Thread Posted August 29th, 2011 in Video Games

The new trilogy is called the "Reclaimer Trilogy" and I'm pretty interested. It has been 3 consecutive releases of Halo games all Masterchiefless. The reason why everybody loved the single player was because of him and the mysterious world surrounding it.

I have a good feeling about this Halo.

Response to: Halo 4, 5, and 6? Posted August 24th, 2011 in Video Games

-It is a new trilogy (4,5,6)
-Developed by 343 Studios. A lot of former Bungie employees are a part of this studio
-Since it is a new trilogy, it is a new story.

They're not making another installment to the old trilogy. The argument that Bungie tied up all the loose ends in Halo 3 doesn't really hold. Think of it as Star Wars almost.

Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3.

I don't know if I will really be messing around with either too much. Battlefield is a good series and I have been playing a few of them since the early PC days. But it seems a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon for the game just to spite Call of Duty. Obviously that isn't everybody though.

At 7/24/11 09:00 AM, GodOfVideoGames wrote: Few know this but if it wasn't for Nintendo we wouldn't have the PlayStation, one of the highest selling video game consoles of all time. You see, when Sega released the "Smash hit" Sega CD, Nintendo also wanted to make a CD based video game console to compete. So Nintendo teamed up with Philips, a company that now makes blank CD/DVD's to make what was going to be called the Nintendo PlayStation. But stuff happened and Nintendo was cut from the mix, leaving us with what is now the CDI. So, in an attempt to continue their pursue to make a CD based system, Nintendo teamed up with another company that also makes blank CD/DVD's; Sony. Same story though, stuff happened and Nintendo was cut. Sony took the name and we were left with the Sony PlayStation. After two failed attempts to make a CD based system, Nintendo finally settled with making another cartage system we know as the N64.

This is actually slightly incorrect.

Nintendo approached Sony first, not Phillips. The reason why Nintendo backed out of their deal with Sony was because they weren't going to have any rights to the CD technology. Sony would manufacture, distribute, etc. A huge part of the profit Nintendo would not see. Nintendo silently talked to Phillips behind the scenes about developing CD technology for them without Sony knowing. Essentially Nintendo backstabbed Sony. Sony feeling betrayed and essentially having a console on their hands with tons of technology decided to make it their own.

Fun Fact: the very first PlayStations made actually had a port that could play SNES games. There were only 200 of these manufactured. The port was removed shortly there after and the new version of the PlayStation came out (the PSX).

To the left you will see an early prototype to the PlayStation. To the right you see what the "Super Nes CD".

wtf? Yah the Xbox had alot of games, many weren't that great and weren't games anyone bought. The major titles which most people played and remember the most are most certainly going to be backwards compatible with the 360 because there is a demand for it. Well that's why I said virtually, every game that's good enough for you to replay on your 360 will be backwards compatible.

Definition of virtually The Wikipedia link for a list of Xbox games shows there is 966 available for the original Xbox. Of that 966 games, approximately 51% of the original Xbox library is compatible with the Xbox 360 (as of the 2007-11-27 update). The latest European update was in November 2007, now with a total of 476 compatible games. The latest update for Japan was released on 2007-11-28, with 122 working games.

Thank you for everyone that has contributed. I have found some pretty cool channels via this thread. Here are some more that I personally have found since and enjoy.

finngamer - Another collector channel. This guy shows an interesting twist on collection and video games because he is from Finland and he works for the biggest video game magazine in the country. He is a lot like Pete Dorr.

Captain8bit - This is a lot like Pawn Stars, which was their main influence. These guys travel the country hunting for rare video games and things within the video game realm. This is a really interesting series.

gexup - If you like platfomers, this is your guy. This guy specializes in platformers and adventure games. He has a vast array of games he has covered and if you like one of the games he reviews you can easily find another game you might like just by looking at the other games he has covered.

SonicCollectibles - Another channel by Pete Dorr. He covers his massive Sonic collection. If you're into Sonic or collecting, check out this channel.

spectreair - Another collector that has some really cool pick ups. He manages to some pretty rare things. He tends to compile his collecting into one video after he has collected for awhile. Always good to see something you might like or have forgotten about.

Response to: Penn & Teller on violent videogames Posted July 18th, 2011 in Video Games

I love Penn and Teller and video games but I saw this a couple years back and thought this was one of their weakest arguments. They had some good points such as the football one you showed a clip of, but the part where they have the young kid shoot a gun and then cries at the end just didn't seem concrete enough.
