Same here.

I detest turnip greens, but I love spinach.

I don't like any cooked leaf vegetable, really. Cooked spinach is only good mixed with ricotta and stuffed into pasta shells or lasagna.

I don't eat okra.

I loathe okra.

So there you go, you're not alone.

All it requires to be truly Southern is to put booze in as many recipes as humanly possible.

I used our fondue pot, actually. It has a fry setting, and I don't have anything else that regulates its own temperature. Electric stoves suck for that unfortunately. I miss the gas stove at our old place a lot :(

I used Emeril's recipe. They turned out pretty awesome, but I ran out of oil before I could do all of them, unfortunately. They were a big hit. I put the excess dough in the freezer, we'll see how it does thawed and used later.

Just went into the madhouse that is Costco on a Saturday to pick up two pretty good sized briskets, some disposable aluminum pans, and a big thing of salt. Two weeks from now, it'll be corned beef at my 2nd Annual St. Pat's Shindig.

The best things take time :)

They sell it in tall, thin plastic bottles. They're usually green. Tastes a lot like white grape juice, and you can look around for more or less pulp. A lot of regular grocery stores have started carrying it in the international aisle, but at a Korean grocery you can find five or ten different brands.

Also, pureed pumpkin is awesome for keeping you regular.

And you worry about poisoning animals? That's not chili, skunky, that's nuclear waste. I hope you have a gas mask and one of those yellow haz-mat suits to handle it with.

I did wear gloves while I was cutting the peppers. This stuff is so spicy it actually started to cook the meat before I put the heat on.

No, they're toxic. Lots of things are toxic to our pets that are not to us - aloe vera can kill a cat, for example, yet makes a tasty beverage available at your local Korean grocery store.

Speaking of toxic, I just put the finishing touches on a pot of chili that I am mildly concerned will kill some of my husband's coworkers at the company chili cookoff tomorrow. Chipotle in adobo sauce, fresh habaneros, poblano, red bell for sweetness. Splash of molasses, splash of Irish whiskey, diced tomatoes, three and a half pounds of cubed beef. This shit is hot. I splashed a little on my hand and made the mistake of just licking it off. Holy shit.

Parking is $4.50 a day. My alternative is to drive in to DC and pay $250/month for a space, which would be next to impossible anyway because the only major road that goes directly there is HOV-only during rush hour - unless I had someone else in the car, I couldn't even drive on it. Now, I could get a hybrid car and a special tag, and that would allow me to use the HOV...But yeah, that involves getting a new car and all that stuff.

Cost-wise if I only factored the parking and fares, the Metro would cost me about a thousand dollars a year more than the cost of only the parking space in my building. But that doesn't include any of the other added costs (i.e. new car, longer drive = more gas, etc.). As it is I think I'm taking the best option.

At 2/23/10 10:35 PM, Der-Lowe wrote: How far is your job from home?

Approximately 32 miles. The first day it took me an hour to get to the subway station, which is 17 miles from my house, and another hour to get from that station to the one where my building sits thanks to track delays.

Today was better, but not great. Got to Metro in about 45 minutes, train only took about thirty. On the way home it was WAY better - Metro was about 25 minutes, drive was another 25. That's more like what it should be under regular conditions. The problem is that in the DC area, "regular conditions" are actually few and far between, and heavy traffic is far to common.

Response to: - The Regulars Lounge Thread - Posted February 23rd, 2010 in Politics

I definitely need to tweak my commute - today was my first day reporting to the new job, and it was a perfect storm of terrible traffic, track delays on the subway, and the reverse on the way home. Wound up being a 12-hour day. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Blegh.

Now, admittedly, this is probably the worst I will ever see, so I guess there's some benefit to going ahead and experiencing how shitty it can be. The commute was the only reason I was even remotely skeptical about this position, and although I am exhausted and got home and felt like doing absolutely nothing, the workday itself was good and I have no regrets.

The office is closed again tomorrow. Really hoping they open on Friday so I can get my final day stuff taken care of - I do NOT want to have to come back next week to take care of all that crap.

Beginning to question the wisdom of taking a week off between my old job and my new job - after being home for days on end, I'm getting stir crazy, and I can't imagine a whole second WEEK of not working.

Thankfully I do have some projects to work on. I would get started on them now, but I didn't foresee the EPIC BLIZZARD and don't have all the supplies I need.

At 2/7/10 08:32 PM, Dante-Son-Of-Sparda wrote: pff THE KID HAS ME.

So far I haven't seen a lick of evidence that you would be a positive male role model.

Look, I'm the stepmother of a child who was conceived by two stupid-ass kids in their senior year of high school, who were broken up long before he was born. His mom is a nutbag with the emotional maturity of a high school sophomore. His dad was a huge fuckup who took another twelve years to finally grow up and be a responsible adult. My stepson had an incredibly rough childhood being bounced from his mom's dysfunctional household (where the father of her other children beat the shit out of her) to his grandparent's equally dysfunctional household to my husband's house, where he has only in the last few years been able to have a stable life.

The fact of the matter is that you are wishing for this child to have the same kind of miserable existence that constituted the first decade of my stepson's life, which he has struggled terribly to overcome. Regardless of how good or bad a parent your sister or this guy would be, it is nearly always better for them both to be involved from the start, and for the two parents to actually get along rather than hating each other's guts. Likewise if you hate the biological father of your niece/nephew with the unreasonable level of passion you seem to, the kid is going to know. There is nothing more toxic than having members of one parent's family hate the other parent - believe me, I know from personal experience.

Essentially, you are taking pleasure in what amounts to the poisoning of an unborn child's entire future. So, as I said before, grow the fuck up.

I was brushing off Steve's truck while he shoveled and managed to step in a deep drift - it felt solid, then broke through when I put my weight down. I flailed a bit and thought I had managed to regain my balance, then sort of slowly slid down into the snow. I was pretty much buried instantly.

I think if he hadn't been there to give me a hand, I would not have been able to stand up. Maybe I could have floundered my way over to the clear part of the driveway, but I have my doubts.

So now I'm hanging out by the fireplace in sweatpants. We're not going anywhere for a while, the rest of the driveway can wait.

Peeling is totally normal at this stage and doesn't harm the tattoo. At this point I would only be worried if there was scabbing.

This was done on Sunday, it's out of the danger zone now. All I have to do from here out is try not to scratch at it.

Seven, darling, you would save some money if you sent things in small Priority Mail boxes instead of the giant ones you're using. Although, admittedly, I get more excited about a big box.

Ink leaching is totally normal. You do have to make sure nothing that sticks to your tattoo stays there very long, or you can start peeling away actual healing flesh, but I had thoroughly lubed it up with Eucerin, so it was mostly just sticking to the lotion. Today I am not getting any sticking once the lotion is absorbed, which is a good sign. It's starting to scab properly.

And it's snowing again. The guy who decides whether my office closes or not will probably be a prick again and declare the office open, then not bother coming in himself.

So far it hasn't been too bad. I can reach all of it to apply lotion, which I've been doing every couple of hours since the air is so dry.

The weirdest thing was waking up this morning and having to peel off the t-shirt I had worn to bed. There's a Shroud of Turin style stain on the inside of the shirt that is an almost perfect "ghost" of the tattoo - some of the excess ink leaches out for the first few hours.

A Public Trust clearance is one of the least intensive clearances. It basically means that I am approved to view "sensitive but not classified" material. I'm not too concerned about qualifying - if they thought I was a security risk, they would have pulled my husband in for a review when we got married since he has a much higher level clearance.

In other news, we have successfully taught an old dog a new trick - Husker has learned to sit on command. Sitting is not very natural for greyhounds, so it was a little bit of a challenge, but he's sitting like a champ now.
