Yes, that's exactly what I ended up doing. I'm not sure if there is any more convenient method at all, but it's not like this is a lot of hassle and it does work.
Anyway, thanks for the reply.
Based on my experience it takes a looooong time. A 30 sec animation should not be that brutal, but I made a animation that was 4:09 and had a lot of dialogue and my rough estimate is that I put somewhere between 80 and 120 hours into it.
Constant practice will improve your speed, but it can only do so much. Learning the key shortcuts and using them as much as possible can save a lot of time. The less you need to use the mouse to access your tools, the better. And whenever you can, reuse parts of the animation and modify them.
I'd be interested. You can send me a message and describe what you have in mind. :)
Not the clearest topic, I know, but I don't know how to describe this problem unambiguously in a few words. I'm not quite sure whether it belongs here or in the animation forum, so I'm sorry if it's misplaced.
Ok, so here's the problem that I'm having in Flash:
I have two characters who shall fight each other and I'd like to place their respective animations in a symbol each, so that I can manipulate them more easily. However, the problem is that certain parts of the characters, like the arms and weapon will have to overlap the opponent, while the rest should remain in the background. And this will change according to which character is attacking.
If I put the two symbols on the stage, obviously one will always be in front of the other, so the weapon of an attacking character which is in the background will be hidden by the defender in the foreground.
Sorry if this sounds complicated, I'm not sure how to explain it otherwise. I know that I could place the body parts of each character directly on the stage rather than nested inside a symbol and then I could arrange the layers so that the weapons are always in front of the bodies. But in that case it cannot easily reuse animations. It's going to be a fighting game style animation, so certain animations like getting hit will definitely repeat themselves. Therefore it would be easiest to make them inside a graphic symbol and then just change which frames will be played at a particular point in time.
If anyone could help me with this I'd greatly appreciate it.
