While studying for my Psychology final, I came across the story of Andrea Yates. After reading the story, I found it puzzling that I couldn't come to a final stance on the whole situation. I was wondering, where do you stand? Here is her story told by my Psych book, modified for your reading pleasure ...
" ... consider the tragic story of Andrea Yates, a Texas woman who killed her five young children in a state of extreme despair. She had suffered from clinical depression and psychotic episodes for years and in her blackest depressions became mute and catatonic. She tried to kill herself twice.
Her father, two brothers, and a sister had suffered different degress of mental illness, including depression. Yates was overwhelmed by raising and home schooling all of her children by herself, with no help from her reportedly domineering husband, who permitted her two hours a week of personal time.
Although she suffered a postpartum psychotic episode after the birth of their fourth child and a clinical psychologist warned against her having another, her husband refused to consider birth control, although not for religious reasons; "we want as many as nature will allow," he said. Yates was eventually sentenced to life in prison."
