Okay NGers, a serious 'rant' brought to you by the ShitMan. I wrote this 21 January 2004 after a long night of hearing a bunch of bullshit about how America sucks, our country sucks, we Americans suck, and so on down the line. I'm sick of constant societal negativity... Here it is - hope someone gets what I have to say...
NEWS, FEAR, AND CHANGE
A plague sweeps this glorious nation. No, the plague that I speak of is not a cancer, not a disease, its not a war against anything, its not obesity, diabetes, or bad breath. This plague is just... fear.
Fear of all the things mentioned above, plus lots more. Too many people in this country are terrified that they are going to get shot on the way to their cars, that they are going to spend more than thirty thousand on some expensive back surgery, or that their children are going to get kidnapped. These worries are truly genuine and some are understandable. The number one advocator of Bad News in this country is of course the news media. Television newscasters make us believe that our country is truly going down the drain and that its people will all die early from some horrible circumstance. Every night the news tells us about serial killers, abortion laws, gay marriage arguments, child kidnappings, homelessness, white collar crime, and the list goes on. Why?
Seriously. In a world, and a country, with so much beauty and so much hope, so much oppurtunity and potential, why bring its people down with a relentless barage of bad news. Sure, occasionally we hear a forty-five second piece on the man who was saved from the flood by the brave rescuer. Nonetheless, our minds are bombarded by images and thoughts of horror, death, and destruction. Our minds, our hearts, and our country needs so much better than this.
Remember about two years back that whole summer when a shark-bite-phobia swept the nation? Well in that year the shark bite level was no more than usual. In the first place, your chances of getting hurt at the beach are basically insignificant. Chances are better that you will get in a deadly car wreck on the WAY to the beach. Sometimes it seems that the news media picks the smallest and most unimportant things to broadcast. Here's another example. Remember when you were a child and your mom or dad had to go through your candy at Haloween and wouldn't let you have anything that wasn't pre-packaged? Well there have only been two reported cases of kids being poisoning from Haloween candy - and in both cases it was their parents who did it. (Thanks to Bowling for Columbine)
What we rarely hear about is the doctor who saved a baby's life in surgery, or the man who stopped on the side of the rode to change the old woman's tire. We hardly ever hear about the teens who volunteer at the retirement home, or the woman who rescued the homeless kitty. America's people - as a whole - are truly awesome. We are kind, honest, loving, capable, and we have a positive, and inevitably good future. Why do we have to be pushed into a pit of negativity everywhere we look. Televisions, newspapers, and magazines set unbelievable standards of living. Most of us will live normal, long, lovely lifes and will have children and fall in love.
If everyone would forget about those few people who are evil, then maybe there would be more love and more community. Hitch-hikers are NOT serial killers and most homeless people are NOT crack addicts. If people would just stop for that man whose thumb is out and give a $5 to that man sitting in shame on the streetside, then this world would be a truly, truly better place. In fact, don't you think... If we could get our people believing in the good in life, believing that everything will be okay, don't you think that we might see an immediate, positive improvement in the living conditions of a majority of Americans? If we start telling the mother on welfare that she and her family will be supported, and that she'll work everything out, then that mother will start making those improvements she needs to so she can change herself. Lets find a reason to start over new and become an unstoppable, united force.
f**k fear, f**k death, forget logic, take chances, and have faith in SOMETHING. You, me, our country, we WILL be fine, regardless of what the news and the entertainers want you to believe. If you die early, I hope you lived the life that you wanted to. But please, if you let these things, the reported societal atrocities, hold you back, you wont reach your ulitmate potential. I'm not scared of anything, not anything. You better believe I swim in the ocean every summer, I eat foods with high carbs and low vitamins, and I drive a hundred on the interstate. I could die tomorrow from one of these horrible, news worthy deaths, but I will die knowing nothing held be back. Please know that we will be fine.
This trend in our news media may only get worse, and it is up to the individual to make a change. Don't be afraid. We, as teens, are setting the standards of living for our future. Lets make things better and more glorious than we have it now, please. For the good of the world, lets work this f**king sh*t out. I know we can, and I know its not worth the hatred, the carlessness, and the fear.
WE can change and become better. Please - let's do it.
