The close we know of any sort of "afterlife" is that when a person is dying, they go through a form of shock where the brain is losing oxygen and enter in a "dream" of sorts. These are what come from Near Death Experiences and answer why multiple people who've had an NDE in their life say multiple things. Infact, people who have gone through the 'NASA Spin Test Ride Machine Thingy' have even experienced similar phenomenons.

The religious dream about seeing their heaven, some dream about being a ghost, some people who experience NDE's unexpectedly experience all sorts of different things not knowing that they had been on the verge of death, and so forth.

I'm not sure how long these last as not having one myself and being clearly alive, or what the final stage of death may be. I'd rather not think of "Total Blackness" and instead an "Eternal Dream", but who knows.
