The US is going to hold 9/11 important to them for as long as something in the today's news keeps them thinkning about it. As long as the US is in Iraq, or NATO is in Afganistan, 9/11 will have a strong meaning, because at least to them, that is the reason they are there. I'm not saying it's the right, real or just reason... but the terrorist attacks in NY & Washington woke the sleeping giant yet again.
Look back in time to the bombing in Pearl Harbour. Now obviously none of us were around at that time, but I'm pretty sure that as long as the US was at war with Japan, they solemly celebrated that day every year... then after the war it slowly drifted into the past, and now is thought of on major anniversaries... 50th, 60th etc. 9/11 will probably be the same.
