Lip-syncing techniques Posted August 3rd, 2008 in Game Development

I'm having trouble lip-syncing:

I've got two characters in an animation, both of whom have completely separate mouthes. On the main timeline is their body (movieclip), inside that is their head (movieclip), inside that are the individual parts (graphics).

The mouth is a graphic which contains different mouth shapes on different keyframes and in the head movieclip, I have put the lines of each character along the top and the face animates based on what they're saying.

I'm basically just not sure how to animate this best. Should I break it up more and have tons of layers or keep it as it is, and use actionscript to make events work how they should, i.e. when one person has finished talking it goes to the next set of frames on the main timeline to do some sort of movement, during which someone else talks and then the main timeline pauses, and makes another talking animation?

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Response to: Lip-Syncing Lag Posted August 30th, 2007 in Game Development

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I tried streaming sound instead of eventing it, and that works fine. Will this cause any problems in the future in terms of loading though? By which I mean, does it stream the sound as you're watching it, thus possibly resulting in no sound for someone with a very slow connection?

@BlueHippo: Can't I just use stopallsounds(); when I want it to stop? Although actually, I do find now that it goes STRAIGHT onto the next line, stopping after the start of it. This is bad. I think I need to separate the sounds quite a lot to counter this.

Anybody have any more ideas? Thanks again!

Lip-Syncing Lag Posted August 29th, 2007 in Game Development

I've done some lip-syncing in an animation, and when I preview it from within flash (along the timeline, that is, by pressing Enter), it all looks and sounds great. But then any other kind of preview slows down the animation so that every frame, the animation is slightly more behind the voice than in the last frame. Is this a common problem, and if so, how can it be resolved?

Thanks.

I totally agree. A flash I posted yesterday was basically ignored because by the time it passed moderation it was at the bottom. It only got 350ish views, compared with some LL movies, even those with lower scores than mine which had upwards of 1,000. It's stupid and unfair for anyone who's just trying to get a little bit of exposure when half of the users on the portal at the time are simply aiming to raise the batting average of half-arsed LL movies.

Frankly, I think a system should be in place so that movies related to a gang somehow don't get in the way of independent movies.

Whoops. That was my music account. I of course meant music video for the song. Anyone interested?

No time right now, plus I can't think of any sort of music video to put to it, I was hoping maybe someone else could be inspired.

Sorry to bump again but it worked last time. Still no takers? =)

It'll be OK

Once again, I'm in the process of re-recording this, so the quality (and vocals - my voice has improved over the last few months) will be greater than the currently available to download version.

Need someone to make music video Posted November 11th, 2006 in Game Development

I'm looking for someone to make an animation to go along with my song, "What is a n00b to do?" which can be downloaded from http://danielhough.co.uk/music/whatisan00btod o.mp3 - I'm thinking about recording one of better quality, and if anyone can think of a way I might be able to put in some drums or maybe even electric guitar in the chorus that'd be great. However, in the meantime, anybody who might be interested in doing a music video for this, please say so. I'll give you pretty much full control over the content of the video although I'd like to see some evidence of your ability as an animator by seeing some of the work you've done in the past.

Thanks =D

Response to: My gravity code Posted September 11th, 2006 in Game Development

Very impressive, Lachlan! Any chance we could have a look at the code, or any chance we'll be seeing full games made by you using this code? It could make for great platformers! The only problem I've seen is that on the upper level, the ball doesn't quite touch the platform, it sorta floats above it and doesn't bounce properly. Everything else is brilliant though.

Response to: War Of The Worlds - Good Movie! Posted July 24th, 2005 in General

Being a fan of the book and the soundtrack, I can say that this lived up to both. Although the setting was totally different, so many of the original parts were implemented very well. Also, to whoever said the horn was a good sound to use: Yes, definetly. Ulaahh wouldn't have worked. Not in that context.

Response to: powerpoint and flash Posted July 18th, 2005 in Game Development

I've heard that using OpenOffice.org you can save a powerpoint presentation as a .swf - go to www.openoffice.org, download it there. It's an open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, it's very good.

Drawing hair Posted July 17th, 2005 in Game Development

Hey there. I need tips on drawing hair, can anyone offer me any? It needs to be relatively realistic, and a style like one you might find on a slimy salesman...slick, quiffed. Any tips or tutorials? Thanks.

Response to: How's my simple game? Posted June 11th, 2005 in Game Development

Good idea, but suggestions:

1) Kill the music.
2) Get more interesting screens
3) Higher frame rate, yet make make things move a little slower.
4) When blue hits a wall, it stops. Please fix that.
5) Make level 2 easier! :-(

Apart from that, I love the idea, so keep at it.

Response to: Animating Fire Posted June 11th, 2005 in Game Development

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately there isn't anything there that really covers fire. I searched but didn't find much. There was one, but the fire it made wasn't really suitable. I need something slightly realistic. Any ideas?

Animating Fire Posted June 11th, 2005 in Game Development

I'd like to try and create an animated fire movieclip (12fps - yes I know, slow...but I'm too far into the movie to change it now) and I'm having trouble. Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent tutorial, or perhaps a sample movieclip I can download somewhere? Cheers if anyone can.

Response to: Layers, groups, motion... Posted June 9th, 2005 in Game Development

I suppose I could do that. A few more layers can't hurt, eh? Okay, thanks, I'll do that.

Response to: Layers, groups, motion... Posted June 9th, 2005 in Game Development

The problem is, if I put them in seperate layers, I won't be able to bring one thing forward (it's supposed be to walking over two sets of hills and then a set of houses) because layer order can't be changed half way through an animation, can it? Thanks so far.

Layers, groups, motion... Posted June 8th, 2005 in Game Development

This probably sounds like a really stupid question, but I'm rather confused. I've got a few symbols on a layer, and four of them will be moving, and they will be coming further forward (in front of the other symbols) as the timeline passes, and I want them to do motion tweens too. However, it isn't working because of the whole "not with more than one symbol or group" thing, so I group them all and it still doesn't work. Annoyance to the max! Anyway, what on Earth can I do?

Cheers for any help.

1. It was an example code, I wasn't going to find the ASCii for ` for him, he has to do something.

Oh, I didn't realise you simply had to get the ASCII for it to use it in flash. Thanks!

Hmm...thank you very much. However, it would work better with another key such as the ` key. I do appreciate that it was only an example script though. Cheers.

There must be a way of using other keys, right?

I'm creating a game, and in it I want to be able to use a developer's console. Preferably, I'd like it to pop up once ` is pressed. I've got the console in a movieclip, and its working when its visible, but making it pop up (as in, it is usually hidden and unusable, but when the key is pressed it appears over everything else) is another issue. Surely I need an on(keypress) for this? Or is it a listener of some type? I'd be grateful if anyone can help.

Response to: Checking for null in actionscript Posted April 22nd, 2005 in Game Development

I fixed it. I believe there was something wrong with the order in which I did the selection process, so i grouped all the else ifs so that it was shorter and only one error message is displayed. All done, thanks everyone for your help!

I'm pretty sure flash doesn't support "javascript:alert"

Actually it does, if within a geturl. It works on the other parts of the if statement, where I check that other text variables have certain values or add up to certain values, etc, etc. Thanks anyway.
