Response to: Atheist Funerals? Posted June 24th, 2008 in Politics

My family is very religious. I'm sure god will be mentioned at my funeral. I really don't care, the funeral is for my friends and family. I'll be gone, no way for me to care any more and it's not like anyone is gonna hear someone mention god at my funeral and people are going to think "Oh so he wasn't an athiest!"

Response to: How much oil is there really? Posted June 21st, 2008 in Politics

One thing I always think of when people talk "start drilling now" is who is going to pay for it?
Ofcourse it's going to be the oil companies. Huge investments are going to go into it, investments that will be passed to us the consumer. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see us become more independant with our oil, but I still wonder if that's going to hurt us more waiting for the break than just riding out our current situation.

It was suggested in a different thread to get rid of marriage as a legal term all together, leaving the only "Marriage" in the country in the hands of religions. Widening the term to civil unions to cover both gay and straight couples.

Secondly what if people decide to take advantage of a gay marriage and decide to fake marry in order for a cheap buck? I mean hey its a lot less awkward to hsare a house with a best friendr ather than a girlfriend.

There's nowhere that written that a couple needs to live together. I could easily marry a random chick, enjoy the benefits and still maintain our seperate households. Besides this is common practice already among straight couples. The sanctity of your marriage is defined by you and your spouse and your actions. Just because bill down the street beats his wife and cheats on her with his secratary doesn't mean your marriage is going to fall to pieces.

Gay marriages is also the gateway to other definiitons in marriages. People who promote gay marriages claim that their same sex marriages never hurt anybody. Fair enough but lets say I love my cat. Lets legalize pet marriage because it never hurt anybody. I mean hey its alright cuz partners would be consensual, right?

As far as I know we have no idea how a cat would consent to a legal binding contract. Hell we can't tell if they're hungry want petted or just to walk you to some random corner in our houses most of the time.

Address these points and I will happily refute.

I know I'm not the only one to address all points made, and I won't be the last. I'm also sure that everyone will do a fine job so take your pick and refute. I doubt you actually can.

Response to: Solution to gay marriage issue Posted June 16th, 2008 in Politics

I like this solution. It's not really a comprimise, it just takes alot of the arguing chips away from from the anti-gay rights people out there. My big worry is once the gay marriage/civil union argument is done and over with. How much more of a hurdle will there be to get gay adoption and parenting rights set?
Is it something to take one at a time or do you tackle the two together?

Response to: Stop all the religious arguments. Posted June 12th, 2008 in Politics

The problem comes when they try to intertwine faith and science. Lately there has been a rather harsh tone towards religion. At the base of it you'll find several small debates over creationism in public schools gay marriage and abortion to name a few. Most of these can be debated on a logical level, but the fact remains the majority of christians(yes I'm singling them out) took the debate to "Well, We're the majority so you'll have to deal with it. That being said the number of athiests and even christians that believe there beliefs are personal and don't need to be shared by the government that represents them have grown by leaps and bounds in recent history. So after this last batch of power trips that have been pulled people are finally starting to fight back.
The assholes on both sides get louder each day and lines are being drawn that are forcing people to pick a side.
So to put it simply. I have a voice now as an athiest. If you want to use your religion as a reason to dictate how I live my life you damned well better be ready to prove to me it's true.

Response to: Homophobia Posted June 10th, 2008 in Politics

I've found a simple way around this. When someone says something like "That's a gay table." I'll say "Indeed it puts it's penis in another male tables anus."
I figure, you give it a sexual orientation I'll give it sexual organs. And it's such a dumb joke that after hearing it a few times people will avoid using the word for the sake of not hearing it again. Not that I really have a problem with the word or using it. Overused insults just annoy me.
Also. Man up nancy boy.

At 5/29/08 07:39 PM, Phratt wrote: Now lets say something proves that idea wrong and its completely possible for that to happen, evolution fails again at another adapted feature. Limbs. How the fuck do limbs help a fish survive?
If I was a Fish who NEEDS fins in order to survive in hostile enviroments such as the water, having a mutation of a bump instead of a fin would decrease my speed and most likely kill me. If that doesn't kill me, it will kill my offsping eventually. Even so, for that leg to full grow off of one mutation with bones, neurons, proteins and everything is highly implausible and for multiple mutations for that same bump down the same family line is also highly implausible.

Let's say that the fish found itself living in an enviroment with shallow water. It may develope a way to breath both the water and the air above since it's alot easier now for it to find itself out of water. Now throw in a predetor who doesn't have this trait, to escape it could throw itself on land to escape. Well it's land more and more and those fins aint providing that great of transportation. So it developes legs, or more likely became longer with a more flexible spine to crawl more like a snake. Pretty soon it says "fuck the water I'll just stay up here" and pretty soon it loses the fins that do it no good on land. Now it's getting harder to find food since the plants have now adapted and has grown it's leaves and fruit higher to get away from this snake. There's now a need for it to develope legs for climbing, not to mention by now the predator that now has less of a food supply has made it to land and the original now needs a way to be quicker to escape him again.

There's always gonna be a reason for an animal to adapt to survive. And with smaller animals having such a short life span there's no reason they couldn't make these changes in just a few thousand years if that also means a few thousand generations.

Response to: Guns, Gays, and the Constitution Posted May 24th, 2008 in Politics

I think the problem is you're looking at two different(and more) groups put under the same banner.
You have constitutional conservatives crying for the second ammendment and christian social conservatives crying because they fear the country will be unclean.
Just like on group of liberals crying for one groups rights on one issue, and picking up another issue like smoking bans that takes away other peoples rights.
It looks pretty stupid if the entire community acted as a whole, but that's not how it is.
And just to note I am a conservative who strongly supports gay rights. Hell Even Bill O'rielly has said publicly several times and has yet to try to stear away from that he has no problem with gay marriage.

You think that there are good explanations for the majority of people who are healthy, young, and on welfare, though?

Young single mothers can be lazy too. My ex, who got pregnant with our son at 17, currently collects child support from me(something I gladly pay) and welfare benefits from the state. She has the option to attend a tech college at no charge and I've offered to cover childcare costs when she needs to be in school and I'm at work. The thing is she refuses. And I don't blame her. Right now she can stay home day and night and cover all her bills with support from the government. Why would she want to go to a trade school and cover all her bills by working?
If you really want something that is going to fix the sad state of welfare all you need to do is bring back the shame of accepting it.

Who thinks obama is a muslim? There was a short week that rumors were around and they were quickly put aside.
Maybe if your guy doesn't win it's on actual substance? It's possible people disagree with you and him. It's possible they're making an informed decision about who they are voting for and obama just isn't who they feel is the best choice.
Either that or you can keep fighting scarecrows. It's up to you.

Response to: Abortion..? Posted May 11th, 2008 in Politics

Assuming both parties know it's an illegal abortion. Rape inccest mothers life in danger yadda yadda.

Short jail sentance for the mother. Possible psychological evaluation and a mandatory redux of her highschool sex ed class.
Jail and loss of licence for the doctor performing said abortion.

Charges to the doctor don't apply if what the mother said is found to be false. And manslaughter charges to the doctor if he performs it without the mothers consent or best intentions in mind.
