Yeah, but why would the Dodgers want him so badly? I thought that he was a little bit of a cancer in the locker room, kind of a mini Barry Bonds

Manny Ramirez comes in and is already leading the team in Home Runs. They have a huge hole in the outfield, need some serious middle of the lineup hitting. Ramirez fills every need. As for a cancer in the clubhouse, this is a team that has Jeff Kent, Ramirez will be manageable.

I think the question with Greg will be a matter of if, not who. He's pretty much said that the only team he'll want to go to is the Dodgers. And apparently the Dodgers have interest. As long as they don't give up a high level prospect, it'll be a good deal for the Dodgers. Shit, forget having him pitch for the team, he'll make his value in talking to Clayton Kershaw and Billingsley.

But yeah, as you said, lot of questions, and shows signs of a more exciting trade deadline we've had in recent years. As I've said many times on this forum before, trade deadline day is one of my favorite days in the year, who'll join me in having a trading deadline party?

That's called the Borda method.

I see many problems with it, but your thoughts?

I too see many problems with it (notwithstanding, its still a ranked voting method, which falls prey to the aforementioned impossibility theorem).

My main problem is that when people vote strategically in order to get their candidate the maximum chance of winning, it could turn out to burn everyone. As you mentioned it is possible that someone with zero first place votes could win, and in a three candidate election, if everyone votes strategically, that winner could someone whom everyone (but a small, small, minority) hates, as opposed to someone whom half like.

If you mean plurality, which is what we have, there are a host of problems with it. The first and foremost being vote splitting, and a lack of dependency from irrelevant alternatives.

Both the methods mentioned though, fall under Ken Arrow's Impossibility Theorem, meaning none of them are free from the paradoxes can occur in a ranked voting system.

But again, that only applies to ranked voting systems, scoring systems are free from the paradoxes in Arrow's theorem. If America wants a real change, we need to go to range voting or approval voting.

I personally reject the notion of a "wasted" vote- if Sen. Gravel matches your beliefs- then vote for him. Last I checked, that is the principle of what this representative form of Democracy was founded upon.

If it were truly a matter of principle he would have fought for Gravel's inclusion till the end, now he allowed a precedent that eventually took him out of the debates.

Like what, for example?

A percieved Western Imperialism, and a percieved attack on Islam from the West. First you have the mass protests where the pictures were drawn originally, Denmark where the majority of Muslims have had a hard time economically and socially. Islam isn't a recognized religion in Denmark, the Danish government hasn't approved the building of any mosque, at the time of the cartoons there was no Muslim cemetery in Denmark, so dead Danish Muslims had to be flown out of the country to get a proper Muslim burial (that's changed now), and a percieved anti-Islam party has risen to high power in Denmark (the Danish People's Party).

Similar stuff across the rest of Europe, coupled with a centuries old conflict between Christian Europe and Islam, made it a powder keg.

With regards to the Middle East, I think that area's pretty obvious to explain. Also, we shouldn't forget about the Akkari-Laban Dossier which certainly had a factor in the response of the locals.

Now, I'm not justifying any of the actions taken. I was and still am a Muslim who not only condemned the cartoons but also the violent response to them. I'm just merely trying to explain the response.

Are we? The Que'ran specifically states that Mohamed and Aisha consummated their marriage when Aisha was 9 years old, that was pointed out on the first page of this topic. Unless there is some weird Islamic tradition for consummating a marriage that doesn't involve penetrative sex that we don't know about, you're going to have an uphill struggle with this one.

We need to cover a couple of things first.
First, the age of Aisha has always been a matter of controversy in Islamic study. Estimates range from the 9 the topic starter presented, to as high as 20. Here are a couple arguments to the notion that Aisha was 9 when the marriage was consumated, mainly dealing with both the validity of the Hadith that said she was 9, and logical reasoning using her age in relation to historical events to determine her age of marriage.

Now with regards to consummation itself, I honestly don't know what the custom was for Muhammad's tribe involving marriage. And as there is no exact way of marriage in Islam, there aren't any modern precedents we can go by. Also, to consummate a marriage as we know could be very different in the Middle East, in Arabic, in the 7th Century. Since you and I both aren't scholars of the sort, I won't make an argument as to what that exactly means (for all we know the custom may have been sacrificing an animal). I also don't know Arabic so I don't know if the translator translated the word to fit what we know as consumating (the original Arabic text could have explicitly said sexual intercourse) or if he just translated the word "consumated" exactly. Most editions of the Hadith have the translators footnotes after every one, so I'll look that up and look more into that specific point later.

As far as my reasoning to why I think they didn't have sex, the only undisputed part about Aisha's age is that she had reached puberty at the time of her marriage. Now, as we both agree that they bore no children together, the circumstancial evidence would indicate that Muhammad never had sex with her (as I assume that weren't any reliable condoms back then). Also, I've yet to come across a specific Hadith that said explicitly that she had sexual relations with Muhammad.

As I've said before, the marriage was not out of lust but out of politics.

And with regards to the thread (sorry about the double post), people are confusing marriage with sexual relations. As far as I know, and someone can correct me, Aisha and Muhammad never had any children together.

It was mainly a political marriage, and also gave Aisha protection she wouldn't otherwise have.

I would reject that statement. As some Muslims elsewhere rioted, Muslims in America started an education drive, and condemned the riotings: http://www.cair.com/muhammad/page.asp?pa geid=oped&opedid=7

And you can't look at the riots and only say the cartoons were solely to blame, much like many other events in history, it was a culmination of many other events that culminated itself in this form.

I can't take you people. WATCH THE REPLAY. How can YOU possibly be able to determine he was safe when every baseball analyst who has watched it says you can't make a definitive call? This is a case where INSTANT REPLY DOES NOT HELP. There's a split second where the only person who can see if he touched the plate was the UMPIRE. Yes, believe it or not, the UMPIRE had a much better view than the camera in question. We will never know if he was out or safe unless a fan-taken video from the first base side is released.

So yeah, maybe for homeruns, but sorry, safe/out calls would be nice but a lot of times like this the camera does not have the best view, and kids like you like to play umpire even though the view makes it impossible to be sure.

I'm not advocating an instant replay. I'm a purist, I would detest it in any situation. So I'm not arguing that.

However, I do think that the replay of that play shows that Holliday did indeed miss the plate. First, we have to define what is sufficient evidence to prove one side or another. To you, maybe the only way you'll be convinced is if there's footage showing his hand through the entire play. But I think it shows that Holliday did miss the plate.

Let's look at Barrett's feet, as Holliday's hand goes down, Barrett's left foot goes down exactly where Holliday's hand is reaching for the plate, and you'll notice as the ball comes in, Barrett's foot slides along the plate, exactly where Holliday's hand slides by. It was an amazing block. So either Holliday's hand went through Barrett's feet or it was a blown call by one of the best umpires in the business, or maybe he saw something the tape didn't, which is a real possibility I admit. However, from what the tape shows, Holliday missed the plate.

Either way, that game was great for baseball.

Clearly Holliday missed the plate.

Though I think these past couple of years have shown that the balance of power (at lest in the NL) has shifted to the West, (a division which used to be the worst in baseball). So, I'm rooting for the NL West teams to advance, and the Angels to advance on the AL side (though I doubt that will happen), just so we can have an all-western World Series.

I think the Dodgers need to stop making stupid decisions in the managing (General and Field), Little's got to go, Colletti needs to show he's not a one-trick pony. IMO, they need to get A-Rod. If I were Ned Colletti, the day that A-Rod officially ops out, I'm on the phone with his agent.

THats odd, I thought Petco was nicer than Dodger Stadium by leaps and bounds. Kind of like the Shea-Yankee Stadium comparison, when people say Shea is nicer than Yankee Stadium.

That's what I thought. The stadium looks so beautiful on TV, and it is in person- if you're sitting in the front row. On ground level if you're sitting any further back than the tenth row, you can only see batter and pitcher. No scoreboard, not even most of the outfield fence (depending on where you were sitting in relation to homeplate). So to compensate they load the seats under other levels with a bunch of televisions to show the game, and speakers. The result is a game hard to enjoy. The sound system as I said was horrible, I felt like I was going to lose my hearing. The seats are crammed together, and the stadium has a stuffy feel to it.

The only good parts are the playground area for kids, and the park in the back. Also, the location tremendous in relation to the city.

Went to the Dodgers- Padres game on Saturday in PETCO Park. Until then I didn't understand where the stereotype came from that west coast fans don't care. But after watching the San Diego fans I understand. When they were showing the greatest highlights in Padres history, I saw a grand total of 0 people applauding the one highlight they showed (the Garvey homerun in the NLCS). Not one person chose to clap. At Dodger stadium, there's practically a standing ovation whenever they show Kirk Gibson on the big screen.

Also, PETCO park is a horrible stadium. The sightlines were horrible, the stadium is cramped, the sound system is disgusting, the food is mediocre. The only good thing is the location.

Furthermore, the television coverage of the Padres was pretty bad. If you ever watch the Padres on their flagship station, you'll get nauseated. The cameramen (well I guess its the producers picking the shots in between pitches) do a horrible job, and make it hard for viewers to appreciate what's happening. And, maybe its because I've grown up with Vin Scully (plus Rick Monday and Charley Steiner), but the announcer wasn't that good (not Ray Kroc, someother guy).

Although, to their credit, Padres fans do seem loyal, walking around town I saw more baseball caps (Padres and Dodgers, the stadium and city was split about 60-40 due to the sheer number of Dodger fans) than I normally see in L.A.

Takashi Saito waved back at me. But, as for the game, Hillenbrand can't steal a base to win a game. And I think the Dodgers could trade Roberto Hernandez for an extra urinal in the men's bathroom.

He was being taunted when he was sitting in the pen, along with Tomko who's going tonight. Looks like Philly will win today.

Man, Dodgers having a tough time. Though, lets not forget last year when they were in a similar position and ended up winning 18 of 19 (or something along those lines).

Though, management is being idiotic in trying to make that magic happen again. Srsly, why do you send down Delwyn Young (one of the future of this organization) who had batted 6 for 8 in his most recent stint here, for Shea Hillenbrand?

Oh, and what's up with Jeff Kent pulling Nomars all over the place and swinging at every first pitch. Bill Mueller has been a dissapointment.
