I once worked at a restaurant where one person ordered a shrimp and pasta dish. Then when he was done another person ordered the same dish. The owner came in and dumped the remainder of the first dish into the second dish. He added a few new pieces of shrimp and pasta, mixed it up a bit, and then served it to the second person.
I agree with Colbert, Reddit is less useful then it used to be. I also think that generally, link aggregator sites get less useful to larger they become. They get dumbed down and corporatized, which limits the amount of useful information that gets posted and increases the amount advertising and dumbed down crap. All these celebrity and political AMAs are rarely useful or insightful, but they are free advertising for whoever is doing them. Then again, its still more useful then Digg.
If you meet someone with an obvious American accent, ask what country they are from and keep interrupting them with ever more absurd guesses until they become exasperated and march off.
Example:
Speaker 1: Hey interesting accent! Where's that from Canada, England, New Zealand...
Speaker 2: It's Ame.....
Speaker 1: Bahamas, Israel, Malaysia...
Speaker 2: I'm an Ame....
Speaker 1: Kenya, Vatican City, Tuvalu
Speaker 2:: Ameri.........
Speaker 1: France, Mongolia, Gabon....
Speaker 2:: AMERI!!!!
Speaker 1: North Korea, Iran, Syria....
Speaker 2: AMERICAn!!!! I'M A GOD DAMNED AMERICAN!!!!
Speaker 1: Well, no need to be rude. So, North American, South American, or Central American?
Speaker 2: OH, FORGET IT! storms off

Imagine if you will, a "free game" that consists of doing some menial data entry job disguised as a knock off of mine sweeper, or possibly sudoku or some other type of puzzle. Then work that at one time would be a paid full time job could be outsourced to ignorant gamers who think they are getting something free, when secretly they are being tricked into helping balance a spreadsheet or reviewing client accounts for errors.
Unlike intelligence, which has well known limits, the potential of ignorance as a source of power has no known boundaries. Help me help you help us tap this potential.
Some of those idle games you see around here feel a bit like what you're describing. It is amazing the amount of time people will waste for a few medals on a think that just involves clicking and waiting. I think disguising really awful office work as a game would be a whole lot more difficult though. People don't want to do certain types of jobs for a reason. Also, even the best games will only hold your attention for a certain amount of time.
Creating a game that would function as a cheap way to get entry work done would involve having to design a game that could literally hold people's interest for tens of thousands of hours. Even the best MMO's can only manage that for a tiny fraction of the population. The development costs of even attempting something like that would also hardly be insignificant. Plus, you'd really want to target people who are retired, so that they have all the time to burn. Few people can spend that much time playing a game without having to make at least some money to live on.

Probably a little bit of both. You'd be surprised the kinds of weird things that doctors find in people's bodies, not to mention their asses. If there is any way to get it in somewhere it shouldn't be you can be damn sure some joker will try.
So there's a big furor blowing up in Canada and elsewhere about Jian Ghomeshi getting fired from his position over some sexual allegations. Anyway. here is Jian Ghomeshi's side and here is the article by Jesse Brown (the man who broke the story) and Kevin Donovan. There are plenty of other articles and individuals covering the story, but these were the two originals, so you might as well start at the source.
There are all sorts of issues this sort of story brings up. Is it right that a professional lose their job based on their personal life? Do details about people's sex lives really belong in the news media? Are their political dimensions (Ghomeshi is more of a liberal) to why this story broke and the places where people line up on it? Did Ghomeshi actually do anything illegal? To what extent will this news story cool the fairly open BDSM community if they think they might be persecuted if their own sex lives were to become public knowledge? Who is at fault and to what extent, if at all?
I really don't know the answers to these questions and I'm not sure I want to know. The fact as I feel kind of greasy even mentioning it, but this is the world we live in and ignoring that something is occurring doesn't make it stop. I have enjoyed listening to Ghomeshi's media in the past and if him and his team won't be operating from now on that does have an effect on me. It's just all around a sad situation.

Maybe they should, but I'm pretty sure the rest of Spain will do anything in their power to make sure that doesn't happen. Catalonia has Spain's second largest city, one of its largest ports and a whole bunch of other important pieces of infrastructure. They won't give it up without a fight.
Well, Burger King stock definitely jumped after the announcement, so it seems like the financial markets liked this. If I were to take a guess, I would bet this trend continues or even accelerates if the world economy takes a dive (as it looks like its ripe to do). Countries have been competing to attract large companies with low corporate tax burdens for decades now and it doesn't look like the trend is going to stop anytime soon.
Of course, I suppose all nations could agree on a collective corporate tax rate and thus decrease the benefit of their native companies deciding to pull of roots and leave. I can't imagine a scenario where this would happen though with the way things are now.
At 10/28/14 12:06 AM, Camarohusky wrote: Clerical note: your link that says it is a list of countries by net migration is rather a list of countries by Gross Domestic Product.
I would definitely clarify the whole freedom of movement and migration thing. They are not the same Freedom of movement doesn't necessairly mean that people move in and out of the country. That doesn't really correlate to wealth. I would actually render a hypothesis that movement within a country is a better sign of wealth. It means that there are jobs and, most importantly the people have the resources to uproot from their community, family, and support structure.
Thanks for pointing that out. Here's the link I meant to post under list of countries by net migration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_net_migration_rate
As for Freedom of Movement in the EU, it explains it all at that link. Other nations of course define it differently. The EU is a special case, as a political and economic union, and these policies reflect that. In some ways the EU acts like a sort of super state, as you can see in its expansive definitions of Freedom of movement for citizens of its member states. As for non EU states, they have a whole different set of guidelines they have to follow for immigrating to the EU.
This likely accounts for the high levels of non-EU to EU immigration for countries that border non-EU nations, like Greece. The same can be said of EU nations with sea borders, like Spain and Italy. They are a sort of gateway for migrants that want to get into the EU in order to get into the EU system. Once a potential migrant from a non-EU country gets some sort of citizenship or residency status within the EU they then become part of the system and fall under the Freedom of Movement clause listed at that link. Of course, they are also plenty of migrants that enter in this manner and do not retain legal residency, which is a no less serious matter.
So yes, migration and freedom of movement are not the same. Freedom of movement also has different definitions depending on which country we're talking about and Freedom of movement in the EU is really different from say a country like Japan. Some countries don't even have any codified laws concerning freedom of movement, even within their own borders. I suspect North Korea is such a nation. There are also millions of other confounding factors that make a true apples to apples comparison impossible.
Still migration is or is becoming a very important political issue in many nations. People on both sides of the issue use these sorts of statistics to back up their own side, so its worth considering even if coming up with a good answer is extremely difficult.

Ditto on the 1000 ways to die. I could think of worse ways to die, but this certainly isn't in the top 10. It wouldn't exactly be dignified, now would it? There are so many things that can kill you in Brazil and yet its such a beautiful country. I wonder how many people actually die this way every year?
This reminds me of an article I came across a few days ago that said that New Zealand was paying $103 million as a membership fee to Five Eyes. Now, that doesn't seem like a whole lot, but New Zealand is a pretty small country, so their tax base is not that great. I tend to think that money could be put to better use. After all, New Zealand is hardly a terrorist hotspot.
I figure, with a population of about 4.4 million that would average out to around $23.41 for every man, woman and child. Considering they don't all pay taxes the average contribution per person would probably be a bit closer to $35 per person.
There is an unstated assumption in many nations that there is a link between freedom of movement and overall wealth. Sometimes it is stated plainly and sometimes it is assumed to be true with the right kind of management. The European European even included Freedom of Movementin its charter.
However, the correlation is hardly clear. As you can see from this list of countries by net migration rate, the top 10 include some of the richest and poorest countries in the world. We would assume that on balance people would choose to migrate to richer countries, but the correlation remains unclear.
So, what do you think the link with migration and wealth is in your country? Do you find that greater migration has made you more well off or less?

Theft proof huh? Ok, a master thief shows up to your house to steal your Omnistation. Since it's the only one in the world it's just about priceless. After 30 minutes of trying every trick he knows you arrive at your house. You see his face and he can't have you describing him to the police, so he cuts off your fingers, rips out your eyeballs, and cuts out your tongue. At least you still have a fully operational Omnistation though, even if you can't play it anymore.

I rather change my eyes with yours. Not being able to see would really impact my ability to do a lot of the things I enjoy out of life. I can always put on sunglasses if you're eyes are really really weird, but I doubt they are. The added attention might be fun anyway.

I wish Tyrion Lanister would duel wield uzies all through the next season of Game of Thrones with no character ever using or drawing reference to them.
Granted, although some some vague reference to magic and sorcery related to Tyrion is mentioned in the opening narrative before we even see him. Tyrion has become a sort of emperor, since the uzies appear to have an endless supply of weapons and they give him the ability to read people's thoughts since whenever anyone tries to kill him he pre-preemptively shoots them just before they try something. No one mentions this or even makes note of it, but it is obvious to us...the omniscient viewers.
This leads to Tyrion very quickly taking over all of Westeros and soon all the known world and with no one else to conquer or kill the next season becomes the last season. On the plus side, next year there will be a new series premiering entitled "Tyrion", all about the sex life of of the vaunted emperor of Westeros. It is pretty must just like game of thrones, except that all the violence is just replaced with nudity and sex.
I wish I had better senses than anyone else in the world.
So apparently a bunch of pranksters dressed up as armed clowns are going around scaring and sometimes beating up people in a few small French towns. The motivation behind them is not entirely known, though some suspect it may be goaded on by clown prank videos like this. Some people have been threatened while others have been legitimately attacked and there have been some arrests. Apparently something similar to this happened in two Southern California towns as well.
Strange isn't it? I guess we can expect stupid examples of hooliganism to go viral worldwide now.

I miss Freshmeat.com. It was a great website for finding Linux software and quite a big one as well. At the time it was the biggest website for finding Linux and Open Source software around. Then it got bought up by Dice Holdings in 2011 and renamed Freecode.com. They screwed around with the nice clean format and added closed source software. Traffic then dropped off a cliff; big surprise. Now the new website isn't even being updated anymore. Now OSI has started a reboot of sorts called freshcode.club, but they're really starting from scratch. What a waste.
